Imagine having to go back to school in this suffocating heat in new blazers and school shoes. I know September can be warm too but, it seems to me, there’s nearly always a heat wave like this in mid-August. My DC have been sleeping in the basement on and off for weeks because their bedrooms are like saunas. Schools don’t always have air-conditioning. AIBU to think Nicola Sturgeon should just push the start of term back to Sept?

In Ireland we had all of July and August off. In secondary it was all of June, July and August. However the “hot weather” actually came at the end of May (while studying for the Leaving Cert) and early September (back to school). Generally, it’s so cold in Ireland (compared to London anyway) that the concept of summer uniforms doesn’t even exist.

HaudMaDug · 10/08/2020 18:23

@DeeTractor

Pizza crunch is the dug's baws.
Agreed, slathered in broon sauce. Wink
MsEllany · 10/08/2020 18:25

It’s 21 here in Liverpool and raining! And no, I find August is typically rainy nowadays. We get some beautiful days from April-July but August is quite often a washout. It was hot over the weekend here but a horrible humid heat.

PaddyF0dder · 10/08/2020 18:28

Have a sit down OP.

Right. Sitting comfortably? I have something shocking to tell you: the weather is DIFFERENT in DIFFERENT PLACES!

Take all the time you need.

DefConOne · 10/08/2020 18:34

I live in Devon and the weather is usually awful in August. Heat wave breaks on the last day of term without fail 🤣. Scots have got it right I reckon.

Notlostjustexploring · 10/08/2020 18:39

I live down south and really miss a pizza crunch. Although I do enjoy English colleagues horrified reactions to what it is, "you do what to a pizza???"

I'm still convinced that deep fried mars bars are a tourist gimmick.

lyralalala · 10/08/2020 18:41

@DeeTractor

Pizza crunch is the dug's baws.
Best hangover cure ever

The chippy here thought I was a loon the first time I asked if they'd make it, but they happily do now on the occasions I ask for it

DeeTractor · 10/08/2020 18:42

"Agreed, slathered in broon sauce"

Gravy and salt and vinegar!

roundtwotooto · 10/08/2020 18:42

This thread is disgusting.

None of us need you to feel sorry for our kids thanks.

And heatwave! Ha! Well probably get 2/3 nice days once they go back to school but it won’t kill them. The warmest weather we’ve had for a spell of time year was during lockdown when your English kids would have been in school too.

Inappropriatefemale · 10/08/2020 18:43

@Notlostjustexploring deep fried mars bars are a real thing but not many chippys do them.

Cakestandkitchen · 10/08/2020 18:43

Blimey roundtwotooto. Your post is a bit harsh.

jerometheturnipking · 10/08/2020 18:46

Agreed, slathered in broon sauce. Wink

East coasters, UNITE!

justasking111 · 10/08/2020 18:49

We have had an amazing thunder storm, best in years followed by welcome rain.

AteAllTheAfterEights · 10/08/2020 18:51

Sorry you’ve had a hard time OP, you’ve really made me laugh. I totally thought the post was going to be Covid related... we had summer a week past on Friday up here, it was a lovely day. 27c for a whole 24hrs then back to 16c the next day.

Thanks for making me smile!

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 10/08/2020 18:57

I’ve had a deep fried Milky Bar Choo! Was surprisingly good!

RedFaerieBoots · 10/08/2020 19:03

Have had a deep fried Mars bar and a deep fried curly wurly. Much better than I thought.

InappropriateFemale - Piccantes also does deep fried Christmas pudding and deep fried creme eggs. Keep thinking I should try them sometime Grin

Oh and deep fried pizza slathered in lashings of proper broon chippie sauce is the best!

tigger1001 · 10/08/2020 19:04

@DeeTractor

I think deep fried Mars bars are an urban myth. Never seen one. Never seen anywhere selling them. And I've never heard of anyone eating them!
A couple of chippys locally sell them. Never had one, the thought turns my stomach! Never had a deep fried pizza either
KrabbyPatties · 10/08/2020 19:11

Mcphees Byres road....
Brilliant deep fried mars bars

tigger1001 · 10/08/2020 19:12

@ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia

Just wondering is Scots and Scottish Gaelic still alive and thriving in Scotland? I only know one contact in Nova Scotia Canada who is fluent in Scottish Gaelic. I am multi lingual but don't understand (but appreciate the revival) of the other UK minority languages. I am based in multinational London.
Not really where I am but think in parts like the Highlands and Islands it does thrive.

I don't know anyone who speaks fluent Gaelic

ruabon · 10/08/2020 19:38

It is seldom a heat wave when I go to Edinburgh for the Fringe!

I think summer school holidays should be staggered, which would have to be by area, so some schools would go back now, and others perhaps start holidays early August to mid-September. Not sure of the details though.

sage46 · 10/08/2020 20:13

OP you have bought this derision and sarcasm on yourself by daring (as a Sassanach) to suggest that Scotland in anyway needs anymore input from England on how to manage their affairs. You have excited a very raw nerve indeed! I do have some sympathy for you , how were you to know what a juicy can of worms you were opening? I'm aware that I am generalising ( only a bit though!) Scotland has a massive chip on its shoulder and England is so woefully ignorant of how Scotland feels about the historically perceived arrogance of England in it's dealing with Scotland. The sooner Scotland is independent and can make it's own mistakes the better! I am born, bred and live in Scotland. And it's quite cold today.

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 10/08/2020 20:13

@silver3

How can it only be 18 in Glasgow when it’s mid 30s here?

Sorry, I had just assumed it myst be about 30 up there.

30 in Glasgow? Are you kidding? It's - almost - never 30 in Glasgow, never mind in late August 😂 FYI, we get our best weather in May and June, so the July, August, September thing is totally irrelevant Grin
BakedCam · 10/08/2020 20:23

AIBU to think Nicola Sturgeon should just push the start of term back to Sept

Definitely BU .

A) I don't think Scotland has suffocating heat waves. .
B) Your theory doesn't factor in the amount of work it would take a nation to move a term, back a couple of weeks.

PaundryLouder · 10/08/2020 20:25

Isn't there a chipper in Stonehaven that claims to have invented the deep fried mars bar?

Delta1 · 10/08/2020 20:37

@PaddyF0dder proper belly laughing. Thank you. Needed that!
