AIBU to think this is not a normal midge bite?

This has appeared around my bites 7 days after being bitten ... Anyone know why it is not healing and what the concentric circles are?

Seriously, call your practitioner back and explain about the bullseye or send a picture. Or just go to A&E. But please don't hang around, the sooner you get this sorted the easier it will be.

BSJohnson · 10/08/2020 11:06

I’ve never seen cellulitis present with a ring shape like that, but it is classic for a tick bite. Definitely needs confirmation, so that you are on the RIGHT antibiotics.
Have you been in woodland, long grass, or heathland recently? Or somewhere where there may be deer?
If you’ve been in an urban environment all the time, it’s much less likely to be a tick bite/have the danger of Lyme disease.

Allflightscancelled · 10/08/2020 11:07

Tick or possibly horsefly. Both can be v nasty. You do know you need to draw around the outer edge of the red patch, so you can easily see if it's spreading?

blacktop · 10/08/2020 11:10

The assistant practitioner has just phoned and he said the bites has caused Cellulitis.

Did he see a picture?

sruitfalad · 10/08/2020 11:10

Shit- that's the bullseye rash. Get it treated with the right antibiotics ASAP. Left untreated it can cause all sorts.

Marcipex · 10/08/2020 11:12

I had a bulls eye mark like that. It wasn’t Lyme disease, but I was prescribed antibiotics immediately rather than wait for the blood test results back.

cathyandclare · 10/08/2020 11:17

The antibiotics for cellulitis are usually different than for Lyme disease. So, important to check with your GP that the treatment will cover Lyme.

Allflightscancelled · 10/08/2020 11:18

I had that rash for a horsefly bite years ago. That was really painful, went extremely septic and I had to have very strong antibiotics.

It's good to see you've got ABs now, but keep a close watch for evidence of spread, and if it happens get to A&E if the doctor won't see you. Mine was years ago and the doctor insisted I went back to see him 2 or 3 times so he could assess how well the ABs were working.

MaveyWavey · 10/08/2020 11:30

I’d definitely challenge whst the practioner said. It’s classic lyne disease symptoms. The concentric ring (bullseye rash) is only caused by lyme vearing ticks. I had this a few years ago. 3 weeks of strong horrible antibiotics and thankfully didn’t cause any other problems. Please insist on getting antibiotics for this, as if it is lyme and they haven’t treated it, it can be very very nasty

emmathedilemma · 10/08/2020 11:33

Draw a line round the red ring with a biro so you can see if it's spreading or going down. My gut reaction was classic tick bite too.

WhattheHhashappened · 10/08/2020 11:33

Sorry for the gross images. The doctor was sent these pictures:

They don’t show the rings but I drew them on!! 😂

OP posts:
cathyandclare · 10/08/2020 11:35

I think you should send the new ones- they show the bull's eye rash much more clearly.

WhattheHhashappened · 10/08/2020 11:36

The big outline is the extent of the swelling!
Thankds for all of your comments Dr. Mumsnet!
Both reassuring and worrying at the same time! 😂

Looks terrifying. You have my sympathy, I always get horrific reactions to any bite or sting. When I get a mosquito bite it flares up about 3 inches of my skin, wasps stings cover the affected limb in hives. I got a horsefly bite a couple of years ago and wanted to amputate my leg

cologne4711 · 10/08/2020 11:44

Hi OP I think you definitely need to get the first picture over to them. The first one you posted here looks like the Lyme disease bull's eye rash. The ones you sent to the doctor look like cellulitis. As pps have said you need the right antibiotics.

BikeRunSki · 10/08/2020 11:54

Draw a ring around the edge of the bite in biro/Sharpie/something that’s not going to wash off quickly, so you can monitor whether it’s getting better or worse.

We have briefings about tick bites/Lymes disease at work. It does look very typical of a tick bite with the bullseye pattern.

k1233 · 10/08/2020 11:57

I'm unbelievably sensitive to insect bites. If bitten by sand flies after a day or two the bites form multiheaded blisters and are nasty.

I had bites like on your second lots of pictures and over night they went from that size to bigger than the size of my hand. Dr diagnosed cellulitis and it took weeks of antibiotics to clear up.

We don't have lyme disease here so not sure on that. But I can say I've had bites go like yours.

makingmammaries · 10/08/2020 11:58

We have had 2 instances of Lyme disease in my family. The ‘bullseye’ rash has a darker ring around the outside, not like OP’s photos.

Jellybeansincognito · 10/08/2020 12:14

When I get bitten by a mozzie I ring up like this! It’s normal I’d say.

SteelyPanther · 10/08/2020 12:16

Send the first pic you put on, that shows the rings best.

backseatcookers · 10/08/2020 12:22

Please, please send them the first pictures you shared on this thread as I think it will change their thoughts on it, it really is a classic bullseye. Poor you OP, hope you're OK.

Crunchymum · 10/08/2020 12:29

There is no harm in contacting the surgery again and sending the better pic (agree it's the first pic you posted) and telling them your concerns about Lymes disease and asking for the required antibiotics for that too?

As an aside my DC3 was tube fed for her first year and she had a few streptococcus and staphylococcus infections (on her cheek where her tube was secured by plasters)..... was always a course of antibiotics and thankfully never progressed to anything worse!

Notemyname · 10/08/2020 12:32

I had cellulitis earlier in the summer from an insect bite. It's quite nasty, I felt quite ill for a few weeks and ended up with a hospital referral and different anti biotic over a few weeks. Draw a ring around it with permanent marker and track how the infection spreads. It's only by Googling it and seeing all this advice on mumsnet on an old thread that I even went to see doctor! Hope you get it sorted quickly.

WhattheHhashappened · 10/08/2020 13:29

Thank you all!
I felt very silly phoning the surgery this morning but I know myself that this is an unusual reaction (for me).
Bites usually swell up straight away but for it to happen more than a week later is strange.
I will draw a ring round it and keep a close eye on what it does.
The assistant practitioner said that if it gets worse or if I feel feverish I should go to the hospital but I hope that I have caught any infection early!
I have sent the second picture over just in case he thinks I need a different antibiotic.
Glad to know that going to the doctor with insect bites isn’t a ridiculous thing to do! 😂
