...when you'd made an effort to look nice, would you think they were concerned for you or just being horrid?

I used to have a frenemy who always told me I looked tired. I started saying ‘omg so do you - you look exhausted! Are you ok?

I think it sounds rude whatever the circumstances. I innocently walked into the kitchen the other day and my OH said it to me. I was not impressed, as I didn't feel tired. There are other ways of offering help, (babysitting etc), to someone who you think might need it, without basically telling them you think they look like death warmed up!

I occasionally say this to a close friend and it’s usually with concern and with an offer to help. I wouldn’t say it on a night out though but might ask if they were ok the next day.
