To think, without upsetting anybody, we are massively overpopulated on this tiny Island??? What sensible non punitive solutions are there??

Its pretty relevant with all the talk about migrant boats, priti patel saying she will make the passage unviable etc she has done some awful things, it makes my blood run cold tbh i doubt she cares about the safety of them in that boats. But, what di we do, and when suggestions are made its often motivated by hate not quality of life issues. And yes, the ageing massively adds to the overpopulation aswell, but what should we do? reasonably? this tiny Island is massively overpopulated, it doesn't benefit anyone to be crammed in like sardines like this, massively effects access to housing, healthcare, education etc, What should the gov do, not adding to the hostile environment??.

Not sure where you’re getting your information from? Under 15% of our land us occupied. The birth rate is too low and if the population doesn’t rise sufficiently our tax/pension system just won’t work in years to come.

We are far from over-populated and I welcome immigrants, the vast majority of whom work incredibly hard and contribute more than they take out..

NiceGerbil · 10/08/2020 10:50

As an aside I read a story in the paper the other day saying that women in the UK aren't having enough children PANIC

usually it's a complaint that women in the UK are having too many children - the wrong sort of children/ or the wrong sort of women Grin

Whatever happens it will be women's fault I'm sure Grin

Walkaround · 10/08/2020 10:51

@itsaratrap - bollocks that under 15% of our land is occupied. There is life on 100% of it, so it is 100% occupied by something. How much of it it is reasonable or even possible to build human habitation on is another question altogether.

Walkaround · 10/08/2020 10:58

@NiceGerbil - you’re just describing the right wing media’s continued belief in eugenics: they think the wrong people are having the children.

DameFanny · 10/08/2020 11:26

I've reported your appalling slur @Stripesgalore. I've absolutely no idea how you can read my words and think that.

This is a great way to put it.

Honestly, it boggles the mind that humans can look at the planet as merely their plaything - and think that the best thing to fill it with is MORE BLOODY HUMANS.

woodhill · 10/08/2020 12:10

@NiceGerbil

Woodhill essentially because global capitalism model means you have to grow to stand still, essentially.

That's a wider prob than uk.

A rethink on the whole structure would be good but I can't see it happening!

Like the way those marketing pyramid selling groups seem to work - hole in the bucket. I think skilled migrants are fine paying N.I. And taxes but not the ones who will end up in the black market or on minimum wages and need subsidised housing or tax credits
DBML · 10/08/2020 12:52

@NiceGerbil

I don’t think I would want your mum operating on me with cataracts to be fair 😬

In the US many older people continue to work, but not in the roles they once worked in. They tend to be retired from skilled roles and given less demanding roles, for instance welcoming people into a shop or welcoming guests into a theme park. The jobs are then poorly paid to reflect the diminished level of responsibility. It’s sad and I’d rather enjoy my retirement cruising around the Caribbean or pottering around the garden. I do not want to work until I drop dead, in order to support others. Call me selfish, I don’t care.

NiceGerbil · 10/08/2020 13:12

That's a shite model though isn't it TBF.

Spend years at uni, work your way up in a male dominated sector, get old, and go and do something for a much lower wage when you'd rather not be working because... I forget what the reason was tbh.

NiceGerbil · 10/08/2020 13:12

I'm agreeing with you then Grin

woodhill · 10/08/2020 13:13

It's on the news now. They need to be sent back to France. It's getting silly

NiceGerbil · 10/08/2020 13:14

There's also the point that globally women do more work than men when you factor in unpaid work, and suffer financially for it (time out for kids etc and going part time which still falls to women), and we live longer, so in this bright future we can look forward to doing even more as we're on the whole healthier and longer lived.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.

DBML · 10/08/2020 13:24

@NiceGerbil

Exactly, it is rubbish isn’t it.

I personally am hoping to retire a little early, so I can really enjoy myself!

safariboot · 10/08/2020 13:31

Honshu is only slightly larger, considerably more mountainous, and home to over 100,000 people. Great Britain isn't overcrowded, it's just in need of more infrastructure.

MistressMounthaven · 10/08/2020 15:02

People have said immigration is needed to care for the elderly. If all the retired elderly (not the ones with crippling arthritis from lugging coal/bricks/ whatever for 45 years at work) did a bit to help the 'more elderly than they are' eg shopping, post office etc it might help. And at least someone is popping daily or say, a couple of times a week.
Most people I know are retired professionals, teachers, office admin, IT and are pretty fit. I feel it is an untapped resource.
Personally I did do voluntary work wihich I enjoyed but now spend time with DGCs so can''t commit to regular hours.

woodhill · 10/08/2020 15:16

The new arrivals seem to be men from the ME. I'm not sure being a carer would be something they would go for?

Alex50 · 10/08/2020 15:33

So it looks like we will not be able to go to France from the UK for a holiday shortly because of coronvirus but people can arrive to the uk from France without any documentation and can stay. You couldn’t make it up.

NiceGerbil · 10/08/2020 15:44

Erm I'm not sure that the problems with an ageing population will new helped much at all by other old people popping to the post office for them Grin

PasstheBucket89 · 10/08/2020 16:09

The dentention camps here are horrific aswell SadSad,,, I think we will have to start populating some islands, Shetland, British Islands etc.

Avoiding the detention centres is easy, immigrate legally like I did and every other responsible immigrant.
PlanDeRaccordement · 10/08/2020 16:27

So glad I’m a woman! I prefer this to being a man and being unhealthy with a shorter lifespan of average 8yrs but still having same retirement/pension age.

Hm, I think the top 3 countries for U.K. immigrant nationality are Poland, Pakistan and India.
jessstan2 · 10/08/2020 16:31

It seems alright here to me.

PlanDeRaccordement · 10/08/2020 16:36

Well you know in addition to land for homes, UK needs land for farms. About 74% of the land is currently farmland in U.K. but it produces only enough to feed 1/3rd the current population. This means UK have to import food to prevent famine. Less than 10% land are wildlife sanctuaries. Ergo, UK is over populated and wildlife suffering. Even the hedgehog is now on endangered species list as vulnerable to extinction.

In addition, the U.K. population increases by net quarter million people per year due to immigration. It’s not just births and deaths that affect population.

The tax/pension system would need to be overhauled from its current pyramid scheme to a column scheme. But it is completely feasible.

Those are people who have arrived through the correct channels ( pardon the pun ) not those who have arrived on dinghys across the channel , they tend to be from Syria, Eritrea, Sudan, Iran and Afghanistan I think ?
