To think this is why people buy all brand new clothes for holidays?

We are going on a family holiday to the seaside tomorrow. I am so stressed under mountains of clothes to wash, iron and pack for five people.

AIBU to think this is why so many people go holiday shopping for brand new clothes? Put them straight into the suitcase what a brilliant idea! Wink

Seriously though, does anyone buy all brand new clothes for going away? I used to know someone who bought all brand new underwear and socks for each holiday, so maybe it's a thing?

I'm always bemused at people all knew clothes for holidays. They tend to buy cheap stuff. I buy good quality and take what I have on holiday. I might buy some new towels though, as the DC usually wreck the beach towels during the year.

I hate packing. I've no idea why I hate it so much. It would be worse if I also had to go shopping form new clothes.

Kljnmw3459 · 08/08/2020 21:50

I usually end up buying stuff just before the holidays but it's stuff that will then continue to be used afterwards. And I try to buy used where possible.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 08/08/2020 21:52

I only buy things that are needed, we have just had a 10 day holiday to the isle of wight and i bought DD1 new shorts as she only had 2 pairs and needed them, DD2 needed new t shirts as she didnt have enough and DS needes new swim shorts. I always buy new knickers though but i take my old ones with me and throw them away instead of bringing them home and then have nice new ones waiting when i get home also did the same for DD's this year. No idea why i started doing it.

“Sun tan lotion wrecked all of our T-shirt’s last year”

Haven’t heard the term “sun tan lotion” for a while Grin

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 08/08/2020 21:54

My mum always bought us all new clothes for holiday when we went, which wasn't every year. But we bought far fewer clothes in total then, so perhaps it was more she tended to buy summer clothes in the next size up just before holiday.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/08/2020 21:54

@JenandFlo

Why are you ironing? I never iron anything.

Really odd comment, do people really not know why it is necessary to iron clothes?

... I haven't ironed in 45 years, since 1st year uni

I was too busy and decided in future to buy only clothes that didn't need ironing

  • a decision which has saved me so much time over the years Grin
BigChocFrenzy · 08/08/2020 21:55

I pack my favourite clothes and nicest underwear for holidays
but I don't normally buy anything

Serin · 08/08/2020 21:55

I always buy new knickers and socks for everyone. I think it's deep seated fear that we may be searched at the airport.
Then again I still do it if we go to Devon Grin

YorkshireTeaIsTheBest · 08/08/2020 21:57

@Megan2018

I’ve never packed an entire suitcase of brand new things, but it was often 50% new or more. And often new knickers yes! I don’t know why though Blush
My Mum has a handluggage carry-on filled with nice posh cotton / silk undies and nice nighties and posh toiletries / spare glasses and chargers for stuff and a really comfy pair of shoes. She always said she just doesn't want to be caught out with lost luggage. She calls it her Mary Poppins bag. I once asked her what she wanted for her birthday and she asked for the new silk camisole -and gave me a link -to replace the 15 year old in the "Mary Poppins bag". I love the idea but don't travel enough for it.

I am so stressed under mountains of clothes to wash, iron and pack for five people.

Don't understand why you are packing for 5 people.
Even if your dc are still tiny, surely your dp isn't ? Hmm

Without going in to the regular argument about what the point of ironing generally is, surely it's pretty apparent there is no need to iron shorts and t-shirts, swimming costumes, towels and probably fleeces for the beach ?

However, before this thread, no, I've never heard of anyone buyng ALL new clothes for holidays.
I get, that whilst your dc are growing, you might have to replace some things you specifically only use on holiday - maybe wetsuits or rash vest or jelly shoes or open sandals or whatever you might only use on the beach, but surely most things are clothes they would be wearing through the Summer generally.

emilybrontescorsett · 08/08/2020 21:58

I'm surprised people want to wear their old worn out clothes on holiday, unless you are going on a serious sporting type holiday.

frustrationcentral · 08/08/2020 22:02

I usually got my sons a new T-shirt or something and I always get new socks! No idea why...

Haylsk · 08/08/2020 22:03

I don’t buy ALL new, I find that I need to with a lot of things as my children grow out of last years ect - I have two boys and they wear football kits a lot, so they are great for hols.
I always need to buy new sandals/water shoes
Don’t bother ironing - it’s all a mess when you arrive - I use the hotel iron if needs be

willitbetonight · 08/08/2020 22:05

This was a thing when I was growing up. I think it was because I had grown from the year before though!

shinynewapple2020 · 08/08/2020 22:05

Most years I buy a few new items of clothing for my holiday .

This year I have a whole wardrobe of unworn clothes .

Not that it hasn't been nice here but day to day I wear the same few outfits .

Knittingnanny · 08/08/2020 22:07

Pleased to see I’m not the only one who takes old underwear on holiday and ditches it. When my three boys were young I always saved the old sets of underwear when I bought new stuff and took the old stuff on holiday and threw it away . Nice new stuff to wear when we got home. Don’t recall buying any new clothes for them just for holiday, mind you I was very hard up so the holiday would have used up all the spare money.
Still take my oldest pairs of knickers on holiday with me and throw them away. Bras which might be nearly ready to replace also get worn and thrown. I’ve got a few beach type summer outfits that only get worn once or twice a year so they get recycled for a good few years.

Scruffyoak · 08/08/2020 22:07

I buy new pants and socks...oh and pjs

soupey1 · 08/08/2020 22:08

I always bought a few new things for each person plus new pants and socks for our main summer holiday, old worn out ones were worn in the run up to the holiday and then binned and the new ones would take their place on our return.

BrieAndChilli · 08/08/2020 22:10

Most of our holidays are in the U.K. so just wear our normal clothes however last year we did a mini road trip across Europe with a week stay in Italy. Kids obviously grow every year ! So I did have to go out and buy them a load of new hot summer clothes (as never normally need much in the U.K.!) sandals etc but it was more that we’d had rubbish weather up til then so hadn’t really had the need to kit them out in summer gear and obviously needed 2 weeks worth of stuff for them.

Spiedupon · 08/08/2020 22:11

No but I havebvarious holiday wardrobes. Depending what type of holiday and where. I have 2 suitcases under my bed..1 out of season clothes, so right now it's full.of jumpers and winter stuff. The other is holiday clothes. Stuff is wear on beach holiday but never in the UK. A load of conservative stuff for visiting Muslim countries or visiting religious sites and hiking stuff etc for other holidays.
I might yreat myself to the odd new thing but never lots.
I usually do wash it through and iron it before packing as it's usually really creased and needs freshening up as its been packed away so long.

EustaciaPieface · 08/08/2020 22:11

Yes, new pants, socks, summer dresses etc. Always new swimwear.

ToffeePennie · 08/08/2020 22:12

I have to. My usual day to day wear consists of trackie bottoms or PJs. I occasionally put on trousers and tunic to see a client, but otherwise it’s truly scabby means trackies. And truthfully I usually go away with my parents so my mum will properly have a go.
It’s easier for me to buy 2 pairs of jeans, some nice pants and a couple of decent tshirts and be done with it. That way my mum doesn’t harp on at me for my clothing and I get a peaceful holiday.

Mistymonday · 08/08/2020 22:12

Also, I never throw clothes away EVER! Everything past donation/reuse gets turned into cleaning rags at home if cotton or put in council fabric recycling! It is appalling how much clothing goes into landfill and takes hundreds of years to decompose. And yes, I am always smartly dressed (job requires it).

dudsville · 08/08/2020 22:12

I do the opposite - i take clothes i love and know wear well for the climate I'm visiting. I also, if I'm going to do activities on holiday that might lead to messed up clothes, wil take an item i don't like and I'll ditch it after.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 08/08/2020 22:13

I dont understand this at all. I buy new clothes when I need them - sometimes this might coincide with a holiday eg if I need things for an activity (eg skiing) or particular climate. But why would you buy new versions of existing good condition clothing purely because you are going on holiday? I like the clothes I have Confused. It would be a really weird coincidence if a lot/all of them needed replacing right before a holiday.
