AIBU?

To think this is why people buy all brand new clothes for holidays?

We are going on a family holiday to the seaside tomorrow. I am so stressed under mountains of clothes to wash, iron and pack for five people.

AIBU to think this is why so many people go holiday shopping for brand new clothes? Put them straight into the suitcase what a brilliant idea! Wink

Seriously though, does anyone buy all brand new clothes for going away? I used to know someone who bought all brand new underwear and socks for each holiday, so maybe it's a thing?

yep brand new everything for 3 here for holidays. Not for ease of packing really just cos we are treating ourselves and we class it all as part of the experience. .

I've occasionally bought packets of new socks and it's great being able to put them straight into the case. As for clothes, even if I bought brand new everything I'd have to iron everything first. I can't stand creased clothes!

I don’t necessarily have all new clothes for holiday, but my children usually do.

Some because of the reason you mention and the other because we often go to Tenerife in Feb half term and Turkey in Oct half term so I have to buy the sort of clothes they need there in the summer in the next size and store them.

So nice just to cut tags off and pack! I often just get Primark stuff which doesn’t last or wash very well so most of it can the. Be easily given away or go charity shop when I get back

I know someone who does this! Buys all new 'holiday clothes' every year!

We used to take older clothes to a beach holiday as they would often get a bit stinky with suncream then we could throw them in the bin and have less to bring home.

@Jimdandy off topic, but have you been lucky with the weather in Turkey in October half term?

No. That is absurd and wasteful.

@JenandFlo

Why are you ironing? I never iron anything.

Really odd comment, do people really not know why it is necessary to iron clothes?

Ah, but on MN is so good to admit you just never iron anx totally hilarious that yiur kids don't even know what an iron is!

Whatever. You look creased to buggery which isn't so good!

I definitely don’t buy brand new clothes for holidays. Which is probably a good thing, as I am fortunate enough to be able, in normal times, to take several holidays every year.

What I did do, back in the good old days of $2 to £1, was take an empty suitcase on holidays to the US, hit the outlet malls and come back with it full of bargains, eg two pairs of Levi’s for $59. Those were the days...

We have our main holiday at the start of the summer so I buy the DC whatever new summer things they need as they're young enough to have totally outgrown last years summer clothes. The new clothes go directly into the suitcase then when we come home they carry on wearing those things throughout the summer.

It wouldn't make any change - I'd still wash all the new stuff - hate the idea of putting on something other people tried on.

Sadly your post isn’t that clear but I think you’re trying to insult me and my family. That’s nice dear.

I do the opposite - bring old pants and t-shirts that need chucking, get them covered in sun cream and chlorine, then leave behind. Obviously bring some nice stuff for evenings but nothing fancy for the beach.

But clothes need to be washed before they are worn for the first time.

I think it's more likely people buy summer stuff in say May- June but keep them for their first wear on their July-Aug holiday. So more saving for special occasion.

I bought a puffa especially for Iceland as I needed a casual but v warm coat.

Some of us actually like ironing - I would iron every day if it meant I didn't have to dust or hoover again.

No, I've never bought new clothes for holidays. Seems wasteful to me, especially if you already have plenty of clothes.

Yeah, also in Scotland so don't really wear many summer clothes at home so summer stuff is collected over the years and lives in a storage bag and gets packed from there. I generally wash clothes before I wear them so new clothes wouldn't be that much of a save. DCs usually got some new things for holidays when they were young as the stuff from previous year might not still fit and I like new socks/trainers/sandals for holiday

No they don’t, Auld. YOU might be in the habit of always washing clothes before wearing them, but that doesn’t mean that anyone else has to.

Some fabrics, especially jersey, never look quite the same/as brand new once they’ve been washed. I like the box fresh-ness of a brand new garment that’s been pressed by the factory and then steamed in store.

I used to get stressed rather than buy all new stuff.

DH used to do him leaving me -three kids and myself and any washing prior to packing and he'd wonder out loud why I was stressed about it.

I also used to have to get the kids to help - as needed to keep them busy- finding items for packing or week prior washing - later following a list - next getting them to do list and checking.

Turns out way sooner than I though possible they'd learnt to pack for themselves including planning on getting stuff washed and occaionally washing items themselves.

Now I find it much less stressful.

Though pre-packing and ironing isn't something I did. I'd hang up straight and pack well but then iron as needed once on holiday.

They don't, they really don't.

That said, I tend to take a couple of pairs of old knickers/socks that are still wearable but nearing retirement, so I can jettison them while on holiday and make room for other things. Ditto with cosmetics and toiletries.

I always buy new pants for holidays, I don’t know why! It’s just one of those things I got into a habit for.
Apart from that I have a ‘holiday wardrobe’ that comes out to take away that I wouldn’t dream of wearing in real life

Replying to the ironing aspect of the thread

I don’t iron either - I don’t have the energy for it - I hang things up and have never noticed creases ( if it was a shirt though I would make an exception - I only wear jeans and a top though )

I can see why people do iron things though as it does make clothes look a bit crisper .

No way, how expensive and wasteful. I have certain items of clothing that I associate eg with a beach holiday or a walking holiday yes, but they last years. I look forward to wearing them each year, like seeing old friends. Fast fashion is really damaging so I am glad most people don’t do this. Tbf I also don’t get new xmas clothes each year either... I have some beautiful good quality dresses I look forward to wearing each year.

We never need beach clothes unless we are on holiday so most of what we need sits in storage bags.

We don't iron much.
