To have 0 sympathy for people who get too close to wild animals and end up injured?

Article on the BBC this morning, two women have been injured by hump backed whales in Australia this week. Both diving with the whales, one got trapped between two whales and the other one came between a mother and baby.

Yes, it was an organised trip etc etc etc but when will people realise that when you mess with wild animals you run the risk of being hurt?

It’s the same with people who go into game parks and get out of their cars and get eaten by lions etc.

So sometimes these animals tolerate us nearby, doesn’t mean they don’t get pissed off with us though does it?

WTF can’t we just leave animals in the wild and look at them from a decent distance rather than thinking it’s our right to engage with them up close and personal?

So are you vegan OP?

Every bloody time...

Andthewinnerislucky · 08/08/2020 12:42

@RunningFromInsanity

Every time I read about a matador getting gored by a bull I cheer a little.

Also, ‘shark infested waters’? Nope. Water is a sharks natural habitat.

I know right? More like human-infested water. Sharks will be going "wtf?! Get off my property!"
ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 08/08/2020 12:42

The crocodile hunter? Steve Irwin? The guy who was famous for animal conservation and treating animals with respect and care?

Hangingover · 08/08/2020 12:43

We're meant to be doing the whale swim in a few weeks time - I'm having seconds thoughts about it now.

gogorogo · 08/08/2020 12:43

I don't believe that animals should be hurt if a stupid person gets too close. However I would feel sorry for someone who was injured by a wild animal because I assume then didn't think it would be a risk.

I also feel sorry for surfers who are bitten by sharks or people who live near bears. Or for people who do extreme sports, all risks I wouldn't take.

MouthBreathingRage · 08/08/2020 12:45

@SchrodingersImmigrant it's bloody irritating hearing people whine that the animals they're quite happily paying to abuse actually 'absue' them back. Wild animals don't act in cute manner as advertised shocker Hmm.

God, that didn't even cross my mind. Surely poster meant a different personShock
AllPlayedOut · 08/08/2020 12:47

Steve Irwin undoubtedly did a lot for conservation but the way he sometimes caught and handled animals on his show was anything but respectful.

gogorogo · 08/08/2020 12:47

Well sharks luckily don't go around guarding their property & biting every human that enters the water. Do you believe that no one should even go in the water?

Andthewinnerislucky · 08/08/2020 12:47

Living somewhere near bears is quite different from going into the bears' territory, not expecting it to be risky.

The animal attack shows I used to watch were of people doing something similar to the latter. Bothering the wild animals and then being surprised the animals were indeed what they are.

Yup. Dolphins are known to rape baby seals and others... They assert dominance by rape... Well if it can be called that in an animal world.

No way would i get in a water with them

Luckily (for humans) they don't because we drive them away. They probably should guard their property (Not saying kill), like humans do. Would you blame them?

Anyway the point is that humans say "shark infested water" as if sharks lived anywhere else. The only ones doing the 'infesting' in water are humans. We live on land.

Sparklesocks · 08/08/2020 12:53

I genuinely think some people believe all animals are docile and friendly like house pets and can be approached or handled, especially if they have a ‘cutesy’ appeal. The reality is obviously a different story!

Andthewinnerislucky · 08/08/2020 12:54

fleamadonna · 08/08/2020 12:54

I think Grizzly Man is on netflix or prime or something now. Watched it a couple of weeks ago. I felt a little torn actually because while I agree with the OP’s sentiment, I feel Timothy Treadwell’s case as put forward in the documentary was a little more nuanced.

I read about Steve Irwin’s death again recently too - I couldn’t believe it was 2006. His handling of animals looked pretty clumsy but I had a sense he was doing his thing in a big hearted way. He couldn’t contain his love and awe for the creatures. He wasn’t necessarily your average fuckwit who lacks respect.

Mountainpika · 08/08/2020 12:56

If we go into their territory, we must expect them to react as they would to any other animal. To a hungry flesh eating shark a human is no different from any other animal - a meal. Or a threat which needs to be dealt with. I have no sympathy for people who are attacked by wild animals if they go into their territory or terrorise them as in bullfighting. Don't like horseracing. Animals are not for our entertainment. I hate seeing pictures of 'cute little kittens/puppies' in fancy dress. Let them be animals not toys.

CarolVordermansArse · 08/08/2020 13:13

Not just wild animals, or in the wild. The stupid woman who let her child wander off and get into the gorilla habitat of a zoo resulting in the killing of Harambe.

People who let their children climb all over the pet dog and then wonder why the dog gets upset.

LakieLady · 08/08/2020 13:15

You and me both, @RunningFromInsanity.

I can't remember when I first heard about bullfighting, but I was primary school age, and I was horrified. I have never been to Spain, and I won't go all the time bullfighting is legal (although iirc it is now illegal in Catalonia, so I can go there with a clear conscience).

To my shame, I didn't know they had bullfighting in parts of France until we stopped in a town in the Gers that had one. I have now vowed to avoid any of the departments where it goes on.

Bloody disgusting pasttime.

BiBabbles · 08/08/2020 13:49

Those who go out and antagonize them or get in their way like in the OP (unless there is way more going on there like they tried to leave but for reasons were unable to), I have little care for them.

The ones where they did the right things, tried their best to respectfully enjoy nature while hiking or whatever like thousands+ of others do with no issue, but ended up in a wrong place, wrong time, those I do feel for. It's a risk that it's important to acknowledge, but I still feel sympathy even when there is a known risk when people did all the right precautions, the chances of risk were slim, and still got hurt.

Hangingover · 08/08/2020 13:54

I think the most recent one was on the whale shark tour and the humpbacks just turned up for a nosey. So the swimmers weren't hassling them or anything, they were just in the same water. We did the whale shark dive last month in Ningaloo it was amazing.

iklboo · 08/08/2020 14:08

It's because the thread title had the word 'animals' in it. Apparently these days, that's all it takes Grin

iklboo · 08/08/2020 14:15

Jesus @JesusInTheCabbageVan - best not start a post about House Of The Rising Sun then 😄.

Barbie222 · 08/08/2020 14:18

I'm not comfortable about the idea of swimming with whales, I think they are one of those creatures who deserve the respect of a little distance. Given the intelligence of these creatures and their capability to learn from their peers I imagine they will quickly learn how to deter other divers too.

MoiraRosesTransAtlanticDrawl · 08/08/2020 14:18

I think we should leave all animals the fuck alone.
