Wearing masks everywhere indoors is so depressing

Sossen · 08/08/2020 08:16

AIBU to feel frustrated and, at times, a bit upset that I can’t really do anything indoors now, either on my own or with my kids, without wearing a god damn face mask? I’ve just about been able to tolerate wearing them whilst food shopping but that’s because I now take a lot of time to write out a list and meal plan beforehand and I get in and get out, as opposed to before, when I took the time to browse, picked out what I fancied, and maybe tried on some clothes whilst there. I can cope with this ok but what is depressing me is that my ds is desperate to go to a few indoor places like the trampoline park (our local one has strict guidelines in hygiene social distancing and staggering sessions) and I’ll take him but the thought of sitting there for an hour and a half opposite my dh trying to talk to him with a mask on or watching my ds play and he can’t hear me because of the mask, well it fills me with dread. I had a cinema pass which i’ve has for years but I’ve already cancelled It as there is no way I can sit for up to 3 hours with a mask on, it would be unbearable. Every day out we go on that is predominantly outdoors but have some indoor areas I’ll have to remember to take masks with me. If I nip to post a letter, pick up my medication, go into a public car park to get my car after work I have to wear a mask. I expect to be told I’m moaning but I can’t help it. I fully resent the fact that I am being told to cover my face and I have no choice in the matter. Please tell me I’m not the only one.

If the absolute worst that has happened to you during Covid is some minor discomfort because you have to wear a mask....well...it could be worse, eh?

SmileEachDay · 08/08/2020 20:57

Wake up. You are being conned

Conned? By whom and into what?

soasd · 08/08/2020 20:58

You’d probably walk off a cliff if your incompetent Government told you to? Right

I'm not wearing a mask because the government told me to. I'm doing it because scientists and health organisations told me to. Why would scientists and health organisations try to con me into wearing a mask? What would they gain from that?

Userzzz · 08/08/2020 21:00

I hate it too. I try not to go out too much.

RyanBergarasTeeth · 08/08/2020 21:02

What a pure ignorant comment. You have no idea what people go through.

ddl1 · 08/08/2020 21:03

'Pandemic or no pandemic you think its ok for people to get abuse for not wearing a mask despite you knowing nothing about that person or their issues?'

It's not OK for people to get abuse.

That is not a criticism of the policy of mask-wearing, however; it's a criticism of some people being nasty, and too fast to rush to judgement..

I have some balance and co-ordination problems that make me unable to stand safely in a moving vehicle. Especially as I look younger than I am, I have received abuse for not giving up my seat to people who are older than me. I find this unfair under the circumstances. But it doesn't mean that it's not in general a good thing for younger people to give up their seats in buses and trains to older people.

If there were no spiteful types who refuse to wear masks just because 'no one is telling me what to do!. and/or 'Covid is a hoax!' then I think there'd be fewer self-righteous types who judge those who genuinely can't wear masks. Or at least they'd be shouted down more.

ddl1 · 08/08/2020 21:06

'What a pure ignorant comment. You have no idea what people go through.'

Well, over 40,000 have died, and many more have therefore lost loved ones. Many more have been very seriously ill.

ddl1 · 08/08/2020 21:09

'To these people who say ‘it is for the greater good.....’

You’d probably walk off a cliff if your incompetent Government told you to? Right.'

And to be blunt it's people with your attitude who contribute to unfairness toward those who genuinely can't wear masks.

Just as those who take a 'I was here first, fuck the elderly' attitude to giving up their seats on public transport contribute to unfairness to those, who, like me, have non-obvious disabilities that prevent us from giving up our seats.

TheRosariojewels · 08/08/2020 21:09

I haven't worn one at all. I'm avoiding all places that I would have to. I absolutely do not want to take my kids anywhere that I would have to be wearing a mask. I also have moderate hearing loss and can't understand what anyone wearing a mask is saying.

DipSwimSwoosh · 08/08/2020 21:20

YANBU. I have also avoided going anywhere that requires me to wear a mask so far.

Aragog · 08/08/2020 21:25

You’d probably walk off a cliff if your incompetent Government told you to? Right.'

Well the two aren't remotely comparable are they?

Wearing a mask does me, and the majority of people, no harm whatsoever. And it can be of benefit to others for me to do so.

Walking off a cliff will injure or kill me, and me doing so will be of no benefit to other people either.

Aragog · 08/08/2020 21:27

Not to mention I'm not wearing one because the government is telling me to do so. I was wearing one before when scientists and research, and other countries, were already saying it would be beneficial to do so.

TaxTheRatFarms · 08/08/2020 21:39

Hey, here’s a plan.

People who want to wear masks, wear them.
People who think masks are pointless, don’t abuse or belittle those who wear them.

People who can’t wear masks, don’t wear them.
People who can wear masks and think they do good, don’t abuse and belittle those who can’t wear them.

People who don’t want to wear masks, don’t wear them (but do keep some distance from strangers when out and about, as I’m sure you do).
People who think people who don’t wear masks because “muh rights!” are idiots, don’t abuse them. They’re not idiots, they just have a different opinion & priorities.

People who wear masks, don’t be up in the face of other people. It’s weird even in normal times.

People who call masks “muzzles” & “face nappies” ... well, we’ll have to agree to disagree on that one, but I’m sure we’d get on in a different conversation Smile

Worth remembering that not absolutely everyone needs to wear a mask for them to be effective. So there’s a good chance that we don’t need to argue about this as much as we think we do.

Lockdown has been hard enough and shit enough for everyone without having this exact same fight every week.

Totally agree

On the whole people who don't like them or can't wear them don't abuse those that will and are happy to do so. If/when they get abusive it is because of and against those who criticise and judge them not those, who I think are the majority in real life just get on with it and wear a mask.

Overall, a lot less judgement would be brilliant.

Masks are a real drag
But its all about the price tag
Now you need to do your duty.
And shop for clothes and beauty.
Dont forget about shoes.
And stuff you possibly wont use.
And you can go to the pub
Eat lots of lovely grub.
With not a mask in sight.
You can party all night.
Drinkers getting a free pass
So they can drink and fall on their arse.
Had enough of this crap
Sick of being in this trap
Up to me if i dont shop
It doesnt mean you can have a pop.
Now i play the waiting game.
But you wont make me feel shame.
I WILL wear a mask
But being happy "bout it. Too big an ask.

HeIenaDove · 08/08/2020 22:53

@Teal99 I see it was a woman he was abusing. I bet i can guess what life is like for his partner if he has one. I bet he wouldnt have approached a man.

RyanBergarasTeeth · 08/08/2020 22:59

Well, over 40,000 have died, and many more have therefore lost loved ones. Many more have been very seriously ill.

Yeah and many more suffer serious mental health issues which make wearing a mask unbareable, unless your one of those people who think mental health issues are not important.

Am I allowed to abuse and belittle my daft husband? He absolutely loves wearing his ( some very expensive black number) I think he thinks they make him look cool. He loves “ kit” so this has been great for him. Puts his on in the house before we leave, in the car and just out in the fresh air, basically any excuse to wear one.
HeIenaDove · 08/08/2020 23:18

I'm spending more money in shops now to make up for the moaning minis who aren't

i spent quite a bit back in June. Can i have my award if you are getting one.

Oh and you do realize there are people who have been furloughed or made redundant or about to be and will be watching their money. So you are being very Im alright Jack

TaxTheRatFarms · 08/08/2020 23:20

Leflic
My 9 yr old is the same! Is your husband also actually 9? Grin

I don’t know if I should condone abuse and belittling, but at the very least stick an “I’m a bit of a knob” sticker on his back.

Illdealwithitinaminute · 08/08/2020 23:51

I have realised I look better with a black face mask covering my lower face, hides the jowls and saggy mouth, I look much younger from the eyes up! Gives definition to my double chin. I'm not going to take to wearing one all the time on that basis though.

Also I don't understand why wearing a clean mask over clean skin should increase your risk of skin infections

Bacteria thrive in hot, moist conditions. So impetigo tends to be seasonal, peaking in the summer and fall in northern climates. In warm and humid climates, it tends to occur year-round
Causes
Impetigo is an infection caused by strains of staph or strep bacteria. These bacteria can get into your body through a break in the skin from a cut, scratch, insect bite, or rash. Then they can invade and colonize.
The condition can be contagious. You can catch these bacteria if you touch the sores of a person with impetigo or you touch items like towels, clothes, or sheets that the person used.
However, these bacteria are also common in our environment, and most people who come in contact with them won’t necessarily develop impetigo.
Some people normally carry staph bacteria on the inside of their nose. They may get infected if the bacteria spreads to their skin
Impetigo on adults

Although impetigo is more common in young children, adults can get it too. Because it’s so contagious, impetigo can spread through any close contact. Adults who play sports often catch it from skin-to-skin contact.

The symptoms of impetigo in adults are sores around the nose and mouth or other exposed areas of the body that break open, ooze, and then crust.
Generally, impetigo is a mild skin condition, but adults have a higher risk of complications than children These include:
acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis
cellulitis
lymphangitis
sepsis

GPs should not prescribe antibiotics for impetigo, says NICE
14 August 2019 By Beth Gault
The guidelines, from NICE and Public Health England (PHE), say that GPs should recommend topical antiseptic instead of antibiotics, with the aim of reducing antimicrobial resistance.
It found that antiseptics, such as hydrogen peroxide 1% cream, were just as effective as topical antibiotics and therefore should be prescribed instead.
However, the guidelines state that GPs can still prescribe an oral antibiotic if the non-bullous impetigo is widespread, or the patient is systematically unwell or at risk of complications.
Non-bullous impetigo is the more common form of skin infection, usually starting with a rash of small, pus-filled blisters, compared to bullous impetigo, which presents with sores and intact blisters, according to the British Skin Foundation.
It is highly infectious and although usually clears up within two to three weeks without treatment, it is usually treated with an antibiotic to prevent the spread of infection and speed up recovery, according to NICE.
A spokesperson from NICE said: ‘NICE now say that topical antiseptics should be offered to people with localised, non-bullous impetigo if they aren’t systemically unwell or at risk of developing any complications

If antiseptic treatment is not suitable, or a person has widespread non-bullous impetigo, a topical antibiotic should be given instead (fusidic acid 2%). An oral antibiotic (flucloxacillin) is also an option for people with widespread non-bullous impetigo and should be given first line if the person has bullous impetigo or if they are systemically unwell or at risk of developing any complications.’
The guidance also included that GPs should not combine a topical and oral antibiotic to treat impetigo, as using both is ‘no more effective’ than using one.
It follows a pledge by the Government to cut antibiotics prescribing by a further 15%.
David Banner | GP Partner/Principal14 Aug 2019 5:21pm
I’m sure that those impetigo patients subsequently admitted with sepsis will be perfectly satisfied that their GP failed to prescribe an antibiotic
Nick Mann | Salaried GP15 Aug 2019 1:02pm
Facial impetigo is likely to represent URT carriage of pathogenic Staph/Strep
Topical treatment of any kind does nothing to address this
The patient remains a risk to themselves and to any contacts
Cases of neumonia, sepsis and scarlet fever have increased. Who is researching the impact/harms of not treating
Too many agenda guidelines based on too little medical evidence
Carpe vinum! | GP Partner/Principal15 Aug 2019 1:59pm
and then what about school absence? The HPA advice is exclusion from school until 48 hours after antibiotics commenced, or until lesions have crusted and healed. So parents to keep kids off school for 2-3 weeks under the above guidance - I'm sure that's going to go down well on the school attendance record

The OP experiences minor discomfort. Why is it ignorant to point out that actually that’s not so bad, in the grand scheme of Covid outcomes?
