AIBU to think letting your kids eat McDonald's with you at least 4 times a week is disgusting?

Just that basically. I've recently noticed since lockdown has been lifted a neighbour heading out almost every night (sometimes afternoon) with their kids and coming back a short time later with McDonald's. It's been at least 4 times this week that I've. Noticed, I only noticed cause our dog is always sitting on the back of the sofa looking out the window and barks when the neighbours leave/come back. The kids are in and around the age of 7/8 (or there abouts) they did this pre-lockdown too, though.

I will add I am under no circumstances a Saint or healthy eater, I do eat takeaways, McDonald's etc. And feel bad judging but I feel like this is an awful way to feed your young kids especially at 9pm at night. So yeah AIBU? Happy to be called a judgmental bitch here.

I'm not even a curtain twitcher, I'm literally just watching TV and the dog barks so I look out and see them

Your dog has you well-trained!

I also live in a street where everyone gossips and bitches about each other so it's just the norm here.

Sounds like a horrible place to live

myusernamewastakenbyme · 08/08/2020 17:23

I couldn't give a shit what people feed their kids but i would like to know how people afford all these takeaways.

A cheese burger and fries is less than £2

The link between autism and mc dees is usually because the parents have tried everything to get their children to eat 😩
It's heartbreaking watching your child's diet get more and more restrictive and them losing so much weight.
The thing with McDonald's is the food always looks exactly the same, it's bland and even the packaging is the same . It's often seen as a safe food to our SEN KIDS .

x2boys · 08/08/2020 21:47

Indeed @tinseltitsandlittlegits and whereas my own child has a relatively varied diet compared to other children with autism it's still fairly restricted so in severely restricted cases parents just have to feed their children they know their kids will eat no matter how bad it might look to others .

I wish I could eat macdonalds four times a week but I'd be the size of a house. If my neighbours started to have an opinion I'd be amazed because unsurprisingly just because I live close to someone doesn't allow them to comment on what me or my family eat.

Slippy78 · 08/08/2020 22:11

How do you know that they haven't already fed the children and are getting a McDonald's just for themselves? Is that still 'disgusting'?

Blumbil · 08/08/2020 22:17

How do you know they aren't having salads? I remember buying a happy meal for DS when he was around 2yo and as I was walking out a woman tutted at me, gave me evils and muttered something under her breath to her friend. Little did she know he had a grilled chicken wrap, a fruit bag and a bottle of milk - not that is was any of her business anyway.

HandsDownRoundTheTown · 08/08/2020 22:28

YANBU OP - kids eating Maccers four times a week is not reasonable.

There may be some reasons / justifications in specific situations, but on the face of it, it’s unreasonable.

But yes, you’re a curtain twitcher.

I fully understand and appreciate your concern for the children but I am sure some people (fast junk food fans etc) will be rude and tell you to mind yourself own business.

I however think that obviously there are other better options. This style of parenting is not for everyone and an acquired taste. I certainty would not buy into this fast convenience ultra processed non nutritional junk. But each to their own and there is a good business case for their success as it is so normalised as a part of the weekly diet for so many patrons. Don’t be surprise if this leads to health issues down the line as it’s not the most healthy option and surely not in keeping with healthy lifestyle guidelines to save the NHS etc.

WineAndTiramisu · 08/08/2020 23:16

I love the comments you get on here when people ask about a perfectly reasonable packed lunch - not enough protein, crisps are bad, fruit has too much sugar in... But feed them McDonald's daily and that's fine, this place is batshit! Grin

YANBU in the slightest. Yes there may be factors you are not aware of, but it's not healthy in the slightest

eaglejulesk · 08/08/2020 23:16

How many times does it have to be said that simply eating at home does not necessarily equal healthy eating??!!

Therefore, to judge people for eating takeaways four times a week is nonsense when they could actually be eating less healthy options at home - but in MN world as long as the food is provided in a house it must be so much more healthy than McDonalds. I despair of the judgemental attitude so many of you have.

People saying ASD kids may just eat McDonald's.
what about all the ASD kids who live too far or who's parents don't have transport.
do they starve!?

They might eat nothing but dry coco pops, or plain bread and monster munch. I guess parents just try what they can depending what's available.

x2boys · 08/08/2020 23:50

Their parents will just have to try to get then to.eat whatever the children will eat @IKEA888

TehBewilderness · 09/08/2020 00:42

I hope their kitchen didn't blow up.
My kitchen blew up in the middle of the night on 30 November 2018. Hot water line broke and sprayed hot water all night long.
Meal prep was a nightmare for months afterward.

Ted27 · 09/08/2020 01:26

@IKEA888 strangely enough eating exclusively Mcdonalds isnt complulsory if you have autism. My son prefers ham and cheese sandwiches - every single day, except Saturdays when its a greggs sausage roll

TehBewilderness · 09/08/2020 01:33

I persuaded my youngest grandson to eat chicken bolls at Happy Teriyaki with me instead of chicken nuggets at Micky Ds one day before we went school shopping and that was the end of his chicken nugget addiction.

squeekums · 09/08/2020 02:49

@NameChange657

I worked part time at McDonalds during my nursing degree, they could do a lot worse. Everything is as pure as it can come, 100% chicken breast, burgers are just beef and salt, and yes it's fried but there are some pretty good food standards going on, and compared to a kebab or a pizza I think McDonalds isn't that bad. They treat their staff well too and pay a fair wage.
Oh shit, you better hide, you cant go praising maccas in these parts lol

Ive heard that kids who start in maccas as a first job are looked at favorably as the maccas training program is top notch by retail standards, In Aus anyway

FinnyStory · 09/08/2020 08:53

Nutritionally, is a ham and cheese sandwich "better" than a McDonald's burger? Bread, processed meat and high fat and salt dairy. The burger might even have a bit of salad in it! Not knocking the ham and cheese sandwich but I think people sneering over McDonalds have a strange idea of what it is, it's not so different to what you buy anywhere else. A fancy sandwich from an artisan coffee shop isn't nutritionally much different. As PP says the quality of the product is pretty good, I'd rather my DC (or me) had a 100% beef burger than processed pastrami or ham.
