i'm missing the point but it always sounds like a teen speaking, 'i'm super close to xyz' why do people use it so much ? i've never heard anyone say it in rl [that i can remember] did it come from social media or the like ?
just find it iritating like many other so called 'trendy' phases.

NotAWickedStepmum · 07/08/2020 17:11

I think it's come from reality TV! Made in Chelsea, Kardashian's and the like!

LovelyWeekAway · 07/08/2020 17:13

I was going to say Kardshians too , it’s the most used word by all the sisters , ever since that crappy series began Grin

HeyAsdaIAintGonBeYourBitch · 07/08/2020 17:13

Do you find it super annoying?

romeolovedjulliet · 07/08/2020 17:13

go i wish it had stayed there then ! such a shite expression.

OP posts:
BurnIt · 07/08/2020 17:22

Yeah its like super-shite

PatriciaHolm · 07/08/2020 17:23

DP is American and does this, maybe something to do with US kids TV!

romeolovedjulliet · 07/08/2020 17:24

super common on mn too Grin

OP posts:
Augustseemsbetter · 07/08/2020 17:26

It was something I heard from Californians decades ago.

Think it just went mainstream later here.

thepeopleversuswork · 07/08/2020 17:38

Its a Californianism. Mildly annoying in the way a lot of imported US language is but I can't get too het up about this sort of thing. Language imports from other countries are as old as the hills, you can't do much about it.

boreda11 · 07/08/2020 17:44

It is an overused word, and YANBU for wishing to hear it less.

Same with
Like
Big
Little
Literally

Gobbycop · 07/08/2020 17:50

Same as reaching out.

Oh thanks so much for reaching out.

It's the most wanker phrase in existence.

HilaryBriss · 07/08/2020 17:54

I've never seen The Kardashians and I've never heard anyone in real life use 'super' in that way. Do people really speak like that? I've only ever heard it on MN.

thevassal · 07/08/2020 17:56

It's my number one hate and I don't usually get particularly worked up about americanisms. It's amazing how it's become so common so quickly - I remember reading a book about ten years ago where the main character mocked an american self help guide that used lots of 'super's by calling him a 'super tosser,' and the comedy came from the fact that it was literally never ever used in the UK and sounded so stupid. Yet five years later it was everywhere.
Why not just use 'very' or 'really' both do the same job perfectly well and don't make you sound like a super twat!

thistimelastweek · 07/08/2020 17:58

I am uber indifferent.

ShirleyPhallus · 07/08/2020 17:58

I think “super” sounds much more English than American, in a sort of battered-Barbour-pack-of-spaniels type way

Now rilly, as in, “I’m rilly rilly excited!” - that is kardashian speak all over. But I think Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie started it

Pieceofpurplesky · 07/08/2020 17:58

It's a word I have always used on students' work when marking (for 20 years). I never knew why as I never use it in real life! Suddenly it's everywhere and not an old fashioned, 1950s praise word!

MulberryPeony · 07/08/2020 17:59

Super, smashing, great definitely more Reggie Perring than Kardashian to me. I use super a lot. I like it and will continue to use it appropriately Grin

MulberryPeony · 07/08/2020 18:01

Perrin even

TimeTruthandHearts · 07/08/2020 18:02

A few years ago it was the much lower class, British use of...'well'.

Well close, well excited, well upset etc

thevassal · 07/08/2020 18:05

Nooo...@ShirleyPhallus, @Pieceofpurplesky @MulberryPeony - 'super!' on it's own is an very english, famous five, jolly hockey sticks old fashioned exclamative.

But OP is talking about the now constant use of it as an intensifier "that was super funny" "he is super annoying" "I'm super tired!" that sort of thing

FlosCampi · 07/08/2020 18:10

It's the new "very", like "jolly" was the intensifier of the 1950s. Very excited sounds ok, jolly excited sounds old fashioned. Try it! Jolly smart, very smart, super smart.

MikeUniformMike · 07/08/2020 18:11

So, I'm starting to say something very very exciting and super interesting.

Fuck off with the reaching out, the going forwards and the myselfs.

3catsandcounting · 07/08/2020 19:32

Definitely Kardashians (DD watches ALL the episodes, several times)
They spend much of their life in a super- excited state.

Augustseemsbetter · 07/08/2020 19:43

They always sound glum though when they say it.

MikeUniformMike · 09/08/2020 20:12

Don't you mean really, really glum?
