i'm missing the point but it always sounds like a teen speaking, 'i'm super close to xyz' why do people use it so much ? i've never heard anyone say it in rl [that i can remember] did it come from social media or the like ?
just find it iritating like many other so called 'trendy' phases.

It's even worse with "for" tacked on. What used to be looking forward to is now I'm super excited for
Why?

Mrsjayy · 09/08/2020 20:17

I'm not a fan of the double So as in "I was so so sad/happy/hungry.. I really gets on my wick.

It's another Americanism that's made it's way over, isn't it?

Stupot2021 · 10/07/2021 12:37

@Pieceofpurplesky, yes it's an old word for praise, but the way in which it's used is new. We used to say "that's super"; now everyone says "that's super-cool, or super-intensive' or whatever, instead of 'very'. That's what's new.

StColumbofNavron · 10/07/2021 12:42

I use it in social media posts quite a bit and I do sometimes say it. I don’t watch TV and my social media is related to my academic discipline so I am not sure why I do but I do.

I always wonder how much doea it confuse people when they get tagged on a year old thread suddenly 😂
"What's that..have i commented? Whaaat"😂

American. For some reason we love copying American English in the UK. 'impact' replacing affect, for example.

Sarahlou63 · 10/07/2021 12:54

A lot of Europeans say 'super' when they speak in English - it's easy to tack onto the front of another word instead of 'very'. Super tired/happy/hungry, etc.

Maggiesfarm · 10/07/2021 12:55

I remember when 'mega' was used in the same way.

IcedPurple · 10/07/2021 12:59

Another one is 'beyond'.

So someone is 'beyond' upset, 'beyond' angry, 'beyond' exstatic.

I blame American reality shows.

ACPC · 10/07/2021 13:00

Super fucked if I know.

Pieceofpurplesky · 10/07/2021 13:18

@SchrodingersImmigrant yep just that! I had to think if I had drunk posted anything. But I haven't been drinking recently.

Super confusing

ThursdayWeld · 10/07/2021 13:19

It's taken over from mega.

No where near as bad as 'proper this', 'proper that', 'I had a proper (as opposed to improper?) cry', 'I am proper excited' etc etc etc that saturates this site. People on here seem unable to post a comment without being 'proper sad', 'proper crying', 'proper angry', 'proper cross' or 'proper excited'. FFS, use another word! Before I 'proper' (or improperly) stab my eyes out with a fork!
