To still go to Belgium next week

VelveteenBunni · 07/08/2020 13:12

As I am sure you know, Belgium has just been removed from the safe travel list.

We are flying to Amsterdam and then DP parents picking us up from there, tickets were booked optimistcally as we thought situation was getting better, more fool us.

DP mom has said only 1 case has been reported in their area.

Would you still go?

As long as you are happy to do the 14 days quarantine in return then going is fine.

Sirzy · 07/08/2020 13:15

Are you able to quarantine for 14 days in return?

TokyoSushi · 07/08/2020 13:18

As long as you're able to quarantine then yes I'd probably go, not sure about your insurance though...

VelveteenBunni · 07/08/2020 13:21

We can quarantine and fully intend to, we aren't twats :)

No insurance, but we didn't pay for trip, DP is on redundancy notice and I don't work anyway.

RuggerHug · 07/08/2020 13:21

One of my close friends live there. I doubt you'll be able to.

VelveteenBunni · 07/08/2020 13:25

@RuggerHug would you like to expand on why, please?

I live in Belgium (as a Belgian, not UK). Anything you'd like to know in particular?

VelveteenBunni · 07/08/2020 13:28

Well for a start, we are only visiting family. Are they letting UK nationals in at the moment, cannot find straight answer online

I live in Belgium. My understanding is that UK GOV advice is essential travel only.

ItsAllAFugazi · 07/08/2020 13:32

Oh I remember these exact same threads in March..

LienD · 07/08/2020 13:34

I read on the gov.uk site that uk advises against all travel to Belgium. I'm not sure I would take the risk.

We're in a serious second wave of covid, plus a crazy heat wave for the next days (+35 C°)

2155User · 07/08/2020 13:39

A company called BattleFace will happily provide insurance

UK is having the same heatwave and if you believe the papers is just as much at risk of 2nd wave. (Not sure its possible, first wave not done yet but okay)

If you have no insurance what is your plan if you fall ill?

LienD · 07/08/2020 13:51

Then ignore your government's advice and then just come over? Why asking then? 😊

VelveteenBunni · 07/08/2020 13:52

@LienD
Pretty sure most Belgians have done the same over there by the looks of it, if you ask me.

OP posts:
LienD · 07/08/2020 13:52

Just wear your face mask in all shops (no exceptions), busy places, no shopping with the family,...

VelveteenBunni · 07/08/2020 13:54

@LienD We don't intend to anyway, and bringing plenty of facemasks.

OP posts:
VelveteenBunni · 07/08/2020 13:54

Thats if we even go anywhere, its purely to see family.

Personally I wouldn’t.

They’re reporting today that the figures are levelling off again, and they’re attributing that to restrictions and local lockdowns.

We absolutely aren’t in a second wave as it’s essentially just one pandemic according to the WHO, but the risk is still there and it’s still real. And I’m sure Belgium don’t want people bringing COVID over there any more than we want it coming back here.

Thelittleweasel · 07/08/2020 14:30

@VelveteenBunni

How you deal with it is up to you of course. Fly to Amsterdam [Holland] = [presumably] low risk and then picked up in car by DM/DF [again pretty low risk I'd guess]. I doubt if there will be any checks at Dutch/Belgian border. If you come back the same way then I doubt that there will be any requirement [save your own consciences] to notify and presumably you'd just do your self isolation for 14 days.

Starbuggy · 07/08/2020 15:21

I wouldn’t go no.

I certainly wouldn’t go without insurance! Your only cost may be the flights, but you could become ill or injured (not just Covid!) while over there and need hospital treatment or even repatriation. Travelling anywhere abroad without insurance is always foolish but in the middle of a pandemic is absolutely crazy!

I’m in Amsterdam and cases are slowly but surely ramping up here. We didn’t fare too badly in the spring but the city centre is packed with tourists from neighbouring countries now (according to the paper, at least).

Personally I’d be staying put but it really depends on the degree of risk you’re comfortable with. I personally would never travel without insurance though.

ineedaholidaynow · 07/08/2020 15:27

Why would anyone think of travelling without insurance?

Inthebleakmidwinteriwouldsing · 07/08/2020 15:30

From time to time young people come to Amsterdam for a weekend without insurance and something terrible happens. It’s awful seeing families trying to crowdfund to bring their bodies back home.
