Is this unreasonable....!!!

Cant help thinking it's a conspiracy theory to force us to go back to the Costas and Starbucks...

Lucky I have a couple of flasks!!! After wfh I realise how much money I was totally wasting on my coffees every day ;)

Or bring a packed lunch.

welcometohell · 06/08/2020 13:37

Just bring your lunch with you, along with a water bottle and flask of tea/coffee.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 06/08/2020 13:38

Same here. School will open but no use of staff room, fridge, microwave as adults have to distance and avoid communal spaces.

Pythone · 06/08/2020 13:38

@jimmyhill

With no fridge to put it in, in the middle of summer?
SerenDippitty · 06/08/2020 13:41

Sandwiches will be fine until lunchtime.

An ice pack and thermal lunch bag works fine for me.

As a hot desker covering multiple sites I’ve been doing this for years!

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 06/08/2020 13:42

My office doesn't have a kitchen. We have a microwave and kettle we've bought ourselves and we use a tap in reception for water.

lifesalongsong · 06/08/2020 13:42

I've taken a packed lunch to work most of my working life, many many years, and I've never put it in a fridge nor really seen other people do that. Not everyone takes a lunch that needs refridgeration.

SerenDippitty · 06/08/2020 13:42

Or you could use a small cool bag or ice packs from the freezer.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/08/2020 13:42

I've never put my packed lunch in the fridge when I worked in an office (WFH now), never caused an issue - I might have avoided fish in the hottest weather, but otherwise it just sat on a shelf in my office. There was a hot water boiler and a microwave, that's it.

We don't have a canteen either and seeing as the nearest sandwich shops etc are realistically a 15 minute round trip by car if you're lucky, everyone brought their lunch in with them, although some that lived close went home.

Small cooler bag and freezer blocks, simples! Grin

Children don't put their lunch in fridges at school do they? Just take a lunch that doesn't need refrigeration, or a cool bag.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 06/08/2020 13:51

I do currently (when not WFH) work in an office with cafes and restaurants - but its the first in years.
I've actually started using a thermal teapot at home - when I'm in the office I drink loads because I get up when distracted, or someone else makes me tea. Here at home, I just crack on with whatever I'm doing - then get cold or microwaved tea and/or very dehydrated Sad

One of those thermal lunch bags should be fine to keep salad or sandwiches cool for a few hours, wouldn't have thought you needed an ice pack.

Hopeislost · 06/08/2020 13:54

Is there access to drinking water? As PP have said, I'd use a flask for hot food and ice blocks for cold. However the only drinking water in our building is in the kitchen so if that is shut off I'd really struggle, especially in the heat!

Letseatgrandma · 06/08/2020 13:59

With no fridge to put it in, in the middle of summer?

Millions of school children across the globe have done this since the dawn of time (well, school) Grin and been just fine!

kerfuffling · 06/08/2020 14:09

I haven't worked anywhere that's had a canteen for well over 30 years. As for the kitchen - I think that by law they do need to supply water to drink.

SlipperSwan · 06/08/2020 14:09

Just goes to show what a luxurious life people are used to if they can't imagine not having access to a fridge for a few hours

Or a canteen and access to proper coffee at work.
uniglowooljumper · 06/08/2020 14:12

Gel packs you put in the freezer, lunch box from Sistema), flasks, job done. Have worked freelance most of my life - no canteen, kitchen or fridge. Get a soup flask for Winter and/or hot meals, swill just boiled water in it first before putting in the hot food or soup.

I'm glad you've posted, I was beginning to think I was weird for never having even thought that I needed a fridge for my lunch Grin
cherrybakewells3 · 06/08/2020 14:13

I've never had a canteen anywhere I've worked, always took my own lunch. A cooling bag works fine no need for a fridge.

Trashtara · 06/08/2020 14:13

We've never had a canteen and our kitchen is so grim no-one uses it except for the tap. Our office is also in the middle of a residential areas, no cafes, costas or even a corner shop! Lunch boxes all the way here.

SlipperSwan · 06/08/2020 14:16

Get a flask and a cool bag. Plenty of us have never had access to a canteen or a fridge!

DariaMorgendorffer · 06/08/2020 14:17

As others have said, pretty normal for a lot of us! Thermos, Cool bag & ice packs will all do the job.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 06/08/2020 14:18

We have to take a packed lunch to school and flask for hot drinks. We are not allowed off-site at lunchtime and so no Starbucks opportunity for teachers.
