Daylight is FREE!

Is this really tight of me? The kids are constantly sitting in their rooms with curtains closed and lights on during the day. Have just yelled at one of them (for the millionth time) that daylight is free and to please open their curtains and switch the light off.

AAARRGGGHHH I can't wait til schools and universities are back, it's driving me nuts having the kids at home all day every day!

Yanbu. My ds does this. He sleep with a lamp on because he doesn't like dark. Fair enough.

But then he gets up and outs his ma8n bedroom light on as well.

Much better since I've started charging towards electricity. Costs 50p a day in this house.

But 10p and hour after 9am Wink

If you're using energy saving bulbs you're fuming over a few pence a day at most. Yes I know it adds up.

Make it clear you expect curtains open daytime (unless its really hot and trying to keep out the sun, or their rooms are very overlooked and they don't have nets etc to stop prying eyes) and only use lights/lamps if they really need it.

How much do you charge per visit?

I have a massive diesel car, think of the environmental footprint Grin I don't own the copyright so you can develop your own act based on my performance. Extra points if you mention thousands of dinosaurs dying so that they can have those 20 minutes showers though.

@viques

In about 10 generations time the western world will be largely populated by non walking, non speaking, light sensitive creatures with strangely elongated and over muscled thumbs who conduct their lives remotely, don't have physical contact with other creatures and probably never wash properly. The rest of the population will be deliveroo and just eat bikers with specially adapted back pouches.

Reminds me of The Time Machine by HG Wells. He was VERY ahead of his time and near enough wrote the same as the above

I think it's something built in to the teenage brain Grin as a teenager I think the curtains in my room were open all of 5 times a year, the window even less. Now as an adult I need big windows and lots of light, though I still don't have the window open as often as I probably should!

Report
genteelwoman · 06/08/2020 16:54

That is odd. I much prefer the daylight to fluorescent lighting. The best part about waking up in the morning surely is opening your curtains?

I feel your pain. I have a 23 year old who constantly leaves lights on. Hall stairs and landing lights will be on if he's been out of his room, lights in his bedroom will be on even though the curtains are open (because I usually do it if he hasn't) and he'll be down in a minute to start cooking dinner and all the lights will go on in the kitchen even though we have 2 large windows in there. It started in his teenage years and we tell a story of the day we counted the number of light bulbs alight when DS came out of his room to go and fetch a drink from the fridge in the garage. He lit up 24 light bulbs on his trip downstairs but failed to turn of a single one on his return journey. Even telling the story to all and sundry has not embarrassed him enough to change his ways. His latest is leaving the kitchen tap running for whilst cleaning things (eg cafetiere or potatoes). He refuses to run a bowl of water for anything (we are on a water meter). I had hoped when he went to Uni he might realise that things cost money but after 2 years of living in Halls and 2 years in a shared house where all bills are included I think he's actually got worse. Still looking on the bright side at least I'm not nagging him about time spent on the phone like my Dad used to do with me (in the days before mobile phones).

Just buy some energy saving light bulbs OP. With every single light in my house on (even the downstairs toilet!), the smart meter doesn't budge at all. Dare to turn the kettle on and it's gone all the way from green to red!

I have no idea (don’t have teens) but I was exactly like that as a teen too. No idea why. I bloody love sunlight in the house now though!

The showers!
The boy is currently on his second of the day, to freshen up before he goes out for a run! And he uses two towels every time, and puts them in the laundry hamper because they’re dirty.
The other one showers every other day because it’s ‘more hygienic’ but takes soooooo long he’s practically draining the local reservoir.
I’m dreading the lock down gas and electric bills. I’d have to sell a kidney if we were on a water meter.

I have privacy film on my teenagers windows, not sure what they are doing but they are always pacing and DD especially was sure people could see her in her room (fully dressed lounging on her bed). It has helped with the glare and both open their curtains now.

Our electric bill has increased through lockdown. We have one of those smart meters and before lockdown it was often low during the week when only I was at home (I’ve always wfh). Now it’s always got a cross by lunchtime. We use so much more electricity having them all at home. All the lights are on and screens are on permanently for either learning or entertainment. The direct debit was put up £15 a month in July and I reckon it will go up again quite soon if they don’t all end up back at school.

Sometimes they don't grow out of it. I'm the light police in our house. DH will leave all the lights blazing in a room for hours after he left it. If it mention it, he says he did it on purpose because he'll be coming back soon. (Yeah, right!) He also likes to leave the lights on in the hallway when he's using one of the rooms off the hall. I'd wonder if he's afraid of the dark, except he likes the room pitch black when he's sleeping. Just weird habits.

But as PP have said, there are places where having the curtains open all day makes the house too hot. Depending on the side of the house and the hour, I sometimes "have to" close curtains and use lamps. It's far more energy efficient and comfortable than letting the sun heat the room to boiling.
