Daylight is FREE!

Is this really tight of me? The kids are constantly sitting in their rooms with curtains closed and lights on during the day. Have just yelled at one of them (for the millionth time) that daylight is free and to please open their curtains and switch the light off.

AAARRGGGHHH I can't wait til schools and universities are back, it's driving me nuts having the kids at home all day every day!

LOl, I was thinking when we move of not having blinds or curtains in her room but finding something I can just go and put up at night time!
I might just put a couple of hooks in and throw a towel up there....

The teen in question is sitting there fully dressed so it's not a privacy thing. He just can't be arsed.

I keep my curtains closed and light on as if there is any heat our house is like an oven which the curtains help deflect, and if it is between around 9am and 6pm at the moment, I can't see my screen if the curtains are open due to reflective light - no other furniture configurations practical.

The screens are probably the reason.

My son does this and it drives me mad. No windows open either. Its because the light reflects on his TV screen and its too noisy having the window open!

We've just had the immersion heater on for a month because my lovely partner turned off the boiler by mistake. You should see our energy bill.

My dad swapped my bulb to a green one as a teenager so I looked ill when using the mirror.
When this didn't work, he removed the bulb altogether!

Oh this would drive me crazy. They aren't paying the bills!

My DS spends a lot of time on his pc with the blind down - but he says it is to keep out the pollen? He doesn't put the lights on as well.

DH is a bugger though for leaving lights on - as he's 'going back in there later' - ?

OP, if you're still using 60W or 100W incandescent bulbs, then you need to switch them over to LEDs. They cost a couple of quid, but after that, they'll hardly use anything. The reason behind drawn curtains or blinds is a separate issue.

My teen is the same, I think it’s a teen thing. When I was growing up I wasn’t allowed to be a teen and my mother marched into my room moaning about electric and I didn’t take a blind bit of notice.
I’m assuming it’s a phase and shall leave her to it, choose your battles !

Is it to stop reflections on their screens?

Its DH that is the problem here. 10 LED spotlights in the kitchen all on!! At midday.

I spent my daughter's childhood, like Meow's dad, drawing parallels with Blackpool Illuminations (and the tropics). She's 29 now. On my last visit to her home I was most amused to see her turning off the lights and telling me that when it gets cold she's going to put on a sweater instead of turning up the heating.

I’m terrible for having lights on, we have a big light airy kitchen but I still have ten spotlights and a pendant light on at all times, except for nighttime when I just have the pendant light on. It just feels better the brighter it is. My bills are enormous though Blush

Lights are usually on a different fuse to the rest of the electricity. The upstairs are usually on a different one to downstairs too. I was told that this is so you don't fall downstairs in the dark if your upstairs lights go.

Aargh!!! It’s such a bug bear of mine too @chocolatesaltyballs22 DS is very good at turning off lights. DSS on the other hand 🤯🤯🤬🤬 I literally get the rage every time he walks out of the room and leaves a light on. I go up to his room and the light is on so I just call him up to turn it off. Clearly hasn’t worked as he’s been coming for 5 years and probably only remember about 10% of the time.

What, and these are the same kids that are going mad about climate change? They do know where electricity comes from? God, I can’t think of anything more grim than spending your childhood like that.

I guess im a bit boring in that its a bit of an eco thing for me &also i think its life-skills teaching them to turn of what they're not using and just thinking if its needed/wasteful..im lucky it didn't need much explaining. It was different reasons back then-i had a 50p meter in my first bedsit& it made me painfully aware of every penny..

Glare on screens? Too warm?

Both reasons to have the blinds/curtains down but not for also having the light on unless they needed that to stagger from bed to desk seat,...

In about 10 generations time the western world will be largely populated by non walking, non speaking, light sensitive creatures with strangely elongated and over muscled thumbs who conduct their lives remotely, don't have physical contact with other creatures and probably never wash properly. The rest of the population will be deliveroo and just eat bikers with specially adapted back pouches.

And here we are worried about them not getting an education. Needn't bother really, the world is doomed.

It doesn't bother me whether they open their blinds or not, only fight the battles you need to win!
