To think shop workers shouldn't be asking people why they aren't wearing a mask?

My friend is epileptic. She can't wear a mask because it takes very little to trigger a fit, and wearing a mask creates too much of a risk. Over the last 2 days she's been asked in 3 different places (Greggs, Morrison's and the Co-Op) in an abrupt and snotty way "Where is your mask?" By staff. This is with lots of other customers around. She responded "I'm medically exempt" and has been asked why she's exempt in two of those places. She's also been told (online) that she should stay in to protect others and get someone else to do her shopping etc.

AIBU to think this is appalling ableist behaviour to put someone on the spot in front of others? She doesn't owe anyone her medical history. Yes there's sunflower lanyards she can pick up but she's apprehensive about wearing anything around her neck for obvious reasons. Why can't we just trust others that they're doing it in their best interests?

Jesus Christ. The whole point is nobody should be challenging anyone. It's not difficult to understand

HeIenaDove · 05/08/2020 23:08

If the internet wasn’t full of cunts shouting about how no one was ever going to make them wear a mask because they didn’t like them, I expect people wouldn’t be so suspicious when they hear the words “I’m medically exempt

Ladies and gents i give you the new "if it wasnt for all the scroungers you would get your PIP* re imagined for 2020

Miniminiminimini · 05/08/2020 23:09

@LangClegsInSpace go back and read slowly.
@GlummyMcGlummerson

 1. No because they have a medical exemption
 2. No because they have a medical exemption

Just your friend, who has no medical exemption and is not above the law. I’m sure you quite encourage her though.
Actually there is no official exemption list from the government. Technically no one officially has medical exemption. Interesting how you would perceive it as "If you're not on this list you're a dick". Where is your magical list coming from anyway?

No big surprise there.
Bullies always target people they think won't fight back.

Because if they do they can't prove how virtuous are in following "the rules" to all and sundry. but only the rules that suit them at the time

I would very much hope those who are not complying with the law ARE being challenged.

If they're exempt, no problem. If they're just a dick, they can be fined.

Lozz22 · 05/08/2020 23:11

@longwayoff

Shop workers have human rights too, including the right to protect themselves from potential infection. Like your friend has.
Then shop workers should also wear face masks too then!

Then really what's the point in having a law making them.mandatory? They might just as well say wear one of you want because the end result is the same.
GlummyMcGlummerson · 05/08/2020 23:12

@ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN but what actual measurable difference does flashing a card that anyone could carry make? What does this satisfy that suddenly makes the non-mask wearer a good person rather than a bad person?

You complain it's hot for you, be thankful that that's all it is and wearing one doesn't trigger an epileptic fit or panic attack.

We all are in the supermarket that I work in. We don't have to.wear them.in the staff canteen (so I'm.having my break in the car park) or the warehouse. On the shop floor we have to wear them

Miniminiminimini · 05/08/2020 23:14

@GlummyMcGlummerson because they can’t due to medical condition. Fits are not affected due to condition. Fortunately the law doesn’t provide you don’t get to wear one because you have “a” condition. Most people do have “a” condition.

We both know you’re both going to do as you please anyway don’t spend hours arguing on the internet because we don’t all think your friend is more important than everyone else.

You are completely talking out of your arse. My friend knows much better than you what triggers her fits. She is not the only person with epilepsy not wearing a mask. But hey, I guess you have a medical degree and are an expert in this field, right?

What she said...

HeIenaDove · 05/08/2020 23:17

My friend has epilepsy and works as a cleaner in the NHS. Perhaps she should stay home eh? How would that be!

GlummyMcGlummerson · 05/08/2020 23:17

we don’t all think your friend is more important than everyone else.

What about all the other exempt people - people with Down syndrome etc. I suppose you think they're not more important than anyone else?

It IS the law to wear a mask OP. The law is being expanded even further from the 8 August.

You might want to check your own facts before calling other posters "thick fucks".

www.gov.uk/government/publications/face-coverings-when-to-wear-one-and-how-to-make-your-own/face-coverings-when-to-wear-one-and-how-to-make-your-own#when-to-wear-a-face-covering

"In England, you must wear a face covering by law in the following settings:

public transport
indoor transport hubs (airports, rail and tram stations and terminals, maritime ports and terminals, bus and coach stations and terminals)
shops and supermarkets (places which are open to the public and that wholly or mainly offer goods or services for retail sale or hire)
indoor shopping centres
banks, building societies, and post offices (including credit unions, short-term loan providers, savings clubs and money service businesses)
You are expected to wear a face covering immediately before entering any of these settings and must keep it on until you leave.

For members of the public, from 8 August the places where you will have to wear a face covering will be expanded to include:

funeral directors
premises providing professional, legal or financial services
cinemas
theatres
bingo halls
concert halls
museums, galleries, aquariums, indoor zoos or visitor farms, or other indoor tourist, heritage or cultural sites.
nail, beauty, hair salons and barbers - other than where necessary to remove for treatments
massage centres
public areas in hotels and hostels
place of worship
libraries and public reading rooms
community centres
social clubs
tattoo and piercing parlours
indoor entertainment venues (amusement arcades, funfairs, adventure activities e.g. laser quest, go-karting, escape rooms, heritage sites etc)
storage and distribution facilities
veterinary services.
auction houses
We recommend face coverings are worn in these settings now but this will not be mandatory until 8 August. Further information will be available soon."

Pollypocket89 · 05/08/2020 23:19

I have no idea what the point of making it mandatory but unenforceable... But the same people who did that also wrote the 'don't challenge people cause its none of your business' clause into the guidelines... Maybe take it up with the government?

Miniminiminimini · 05/08/2020 23:19

@GlummyMcGlummerson evidently she doesn’t but at least she had you. You should scream into the abyss for another 10 hours.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 05/08/2020 23:19

@HeIenaDove

At least it's disclosing the true nature of some

And proving that the hard left are just as dangerous to disabled people as the hard right.

See, how does this make sense?

There might well be some people with certain conditions who can't wear masks but there are also disabled people with conditions that make them much more vulnerable to Covid. So, you're arguing for disabled rights, but apparently, only for the rights of some disabled people. You seem quite happy to ignore the extremely vulnerable people who are more at risk because people aren't wearing masks.

Viviennemary · 05/08/2020 23:21

Everybody should wear a mask. It's the rule. I think she should shop online if she is unable to wear a mask. And shop workers should be wearing them too.

Pollypocket89 · 05/08/2020 23:22

I'd say read the disability discrimination act but it's longer than the guidelines that have gone unread...

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 05/08/2020 23:24

A card doesn’t set off a panic attack or epileptic fit Hmm I never said your friend should wear a mask

I said for myself it’s an inconvenience that’s all it is for myself of course i don’t want to wear one all day but that is the situation we are in

LangClegsInSpace · 05/08/2020 23:24

The law is to wear a mask. If you are not wearing one then you may be challenged. There is no point throwing a wobbly about the fact that if you are not complying with the law then you may be asked about it.

The law is to wear a mask unless you are exempt.

People who are unable to wear a mask are still allowed in shops and they are still complying with the law if they go to the shop and don't wear one.

It's important for people who can't wear a face covering to know that the law is on their side.
