Hello I have just bought a new bike for my son. İ out the handle pars on, seat done, front wheel on. İt turned up with this things not attached. No problem. However when you turn the pedals the wheel doesn't turn. Do i need to do something with the chain first? Or should it come fine and is broken? Worried now as i have no way if getting it anywhere to get it fixed if it is broken

Check the chain is on the teeth of the pedal axle and wheel axle. Also check you’re turning the pedals the right way as the wheel won’t turn if you pedal backwards with a freewheel hub.

Is the chain sotting in the cog by the pedal and also on the back wheel cog? It won't turn the back wheel if it isn't sitting on the cog

BikeRunSki · 03/08/2020 11:28

Is there a little cog or series of staked cogs on the back wheel. The chain needs to go around one of them.

Can you post a photo of the chain and back wheel?
What bike is it?

Chanjer · 03/08/2020 11:29

Can you post a clear picture of the pedal andchain areas and rear wheel?

Foodiefoodieyemek · 03/08/2020 11:30

Ok will try and post a picture. İt's a falcon bike

It looks like the chain is between the largest cog and the wheel itself. So it needs to be laid into the track properly

Change the rear gear down to one click lower and try and reseat it

Foodiefoodieyemek · 03/08/2020 11:33

Thanks all

Chanjer · 03/08/2020 11:34

If you pedal it backwards slowly it might reseat itself

Ifailed · 03/08/2020 11:35

the chain should be on top of one of the sprockets, like this:

I'm guessing this is the problem

It's off at both ends yes

Foodiefoodieyemek · 03/08/2020 11:40

Yes just got it on the back. Can't get it on the front one though Confused

Chanjer · 03/08/2020 11:41

Move the front gear to the smallest gear and pedal it slowly backwards

Foodiefoodieyemek · 03/08/2020 11:41

İt's stuck between the frame and the cog. Looks too small and wouldn't stretch even it was unstuck

OP posts:
Ifailed · 03/08/2020 11:42

if you push the derailleur forwards towards the pedals, the chain will slacken off. The derailleur is the thing underneath the gears on the back wheel.

Chanjer · 03/08/2020 11:42

Sometimes they can get jammed between the front gear and the bike frame and you might need to pull it forward to release it. That normally only happens if it comes off while riding though

Foodiefoodieyemek · 03/08/2020 11:43

Stupid question is smallest gear 7 or 1. 1 feels tight

OP posts:
mum11970 · 03/08/2020 11:43

The chain has just come off the cog. Just pull the chain out of the space between the two cogs and place it on the top of a cog. Lift the wheel off the floor, turn then pedal and it should shift on to the correct cog for whatever gear it is in. Straighten the black bit at the bottom a bit if you need a little more slack in the chain whilst you put it back on the cog.

Chanjer · 03/08/2020 11:44

Smallest gear on the front, if you've got the back on already

Ifailed · 03/08/2020 11:44

7 is the smallest gear.

mum11970 · 03/08/2020 11:45

Whichever cog you put it on, it will move over to the correct one when you turn the pedals.

Foodiefoodieyemek · 03/08/2020 11:45

İ did it!!! Thanks everyone. Phew!!

OP posts:
Yugi · 03/08/2020 11:45

You should be able to push the bottom cog thing on the back wheel forward to give you some slack on the chain

Excuse my technical language 😂
