To be so nervous for a colonoscopy

binkyblinky · 02/08/2020 20:46

I've got my first ever colonoscopy on Tuesday morning 😣

Tomorrow at one I start my course of moviprep at 1pm - not looking forward to that either!

I'm being sedated but I'm so nervous for the procedure.

Docs suspect crohns in my large bowel so hopefully it won't have to go 'in' too far.

If they see anything, will they tell me there and then?

Need some words of encouragement and random 'I bet you're shitting it' jokes please

Maybe a graphic question but why would it be painful anyway? I imagine having your... back end stretched isn’t very nice but is that the limit of it? I’d assumed the internal bit would feel more like pressure and poking around rather than painful?

pinkbalconyrailing · 03/08/2020 20:50

air is pumped to widen the intestines to get a look.
that can be a bit unpleasant/painful (trapped wind kind of feeling)

binkyblinky · 03/08/2020 21:11

Wow, that Movicol is some powerful stuff!

I don't have sedation for mine, I have gas and air, less after effects and you are able to leave quicker.

The colonoscopy is nothing in comparison to the prep! It's revolting. I got picolax from my Dr instead, it was still revolting but not as bad as the moviprep.

I always feel fine the next day too.

newtb · 03/08/2020 21:22

I've had 2 and another due next summer. The second time I had vague memories of it saying coke. So drank some. Don't. Just don't. Hot acid hurtling out of your arse is not one of life's good experiences.

The first time they found and removed a pre-cancerous polyp (adénome), 2nd time all clear.

Kay1341 · 03/08/2020 21:46

My experience seems to be different from the majority, but even with sedation and extra painkillers my colonoscopy was so painful they couldn't finish it. I remember the whole thing too. I was diagnosed with colitis that they said was pretty inflamed, so maybe it was that because my pain tolerance is generally pretty high.

binkyblinky · 03/08/2020 22:39

I'm sorry @Kay1341. I hope they manage it for you?

Well I've just finished my second dose of moviprep and the. Another 500mls of water and hopefully I'll be able to sleep soon!

Thanks so much everyone x

@binkyblinky how are you feeling now?
I'm trying not to panic about mine Confused

@Kay1341

Like you Kay, I had that experience, and someone else on here also found it very painful. I had sedation and experienced every painful moment. I certainly haven't forgotten it - it was about three years ago. They were able to finish the procedure, and removed a polyp (which can later become cancerous) so I'm glad I went through with it. It does make you wonder when the majority of people say they had no probem with it, apart from the prep, why were you different; but I'd take the (horrible) prep anytime over the procedure. The type of polyp I had removed meant that I'm automatically rescheduled to have the colonoscopy repeated every five years. I want to go along with this, but I won't unless I can get much deeper sedation.

However, as practically everybody on here has had a positive experience, I'd definately say that people should have the procedure if it's recommended. It's an option that we're lucky to have, and can throw up things that need to be dealt with.

binkyblinky · 04/08/2020 21:29

Hi! I'm ok, still not trusting the urge to fart!

So, the moviprep wasn't as bad tasting as I thought although I did get fed up of it. I made it with flat lemonade.

My god, I've never experienced anything like it! Luckily I was able to lay on my bed which is next to the en suite door. Didn't stop passing liquid til half two in the morning!

I got to the hospital, 08:30. they had trouble getting the cannula in as I was so dehydrated (three litres of liquid shit!)

The sedation worked very quickly, it didn't hurt passing the camera in. It was uncomfortable when it turned, like horrible period pain, but not constant at all. Just a deep ache really. The entinox really helped, I must have been talking absolute crap!

There were three nurses and the consultant. There were screens everywhere and I watched the whole procedure, it was really, really interesting. I had eleven biopsies, these didn't hurt either.

As soon as the camera was out I was wheeled into recovery for 20 minutes (drifted off!) and then sat in a chair and had a drink of coffee and some biscuits. I was back home and in bed by eleven!

I felt really tired so enjoyed listening to the kids run riot downstairs with my husband while I enjoyed online window shopping and napping for the afternoon.

Not painful, just uncomfortable in place.

Oh, and the dignity shorts - hilarious!

Good to hear from you Binky. Glad it went well.

HitthefloorforTaintedLove · 05/08/2020 01:50

Glad it went well Binky. Milk it a bit with your DH!

@somm you can have stronger sedation but may need to argue your case, your previous experience should be documented. DH had one done a few years ago under general so can be done. He usually has 'ordinary' sedation and that's what he had last few times. He was diagnosed with bowel cancer following a colonoscopy so can't underestimate the importance of the procedure even if it is unpleasant.

In general if the worst that happens is a ring of fire then that's a win (albeit night not feel like it at the time!)

Lookyloo · 05/08/2020 02:07

I've one of these coming up but haven't received the appointment yet.

I am absolutely dreading it, for various reasons.

This evening I've got incredible pain and the surgeon said that I only needed to go to A&E if I felt faint or saw a lot of blood (have neither), but the pain is getting really bad. I hope they do it sooner rather than later.

TalkingOutOfMyBottom · 05/08/2020 02:43

I hope you are OK @Lookyloo. Flowers

I had one today too. It's like a little Colonoscopy Club here!

I didn't find the prep too bad - so long as I drank it quickly it was fine. Both lots took 15 mins to work and the emptying process took two hours each. I took in a scented candle and my kindle to the loo!

The procedure was fine. I was quite awake but there was just a bit of discomfort. I also had a polyp zapped. I wish I'd had it tested but it was small and zapped to smithereens. I'm now wondering if I should be regularly retested.

Private - so nice food afterwards. I had to self isolate three days after a swab.

AllNaturalIngredients · 05/08/2020 03:11

I had one in September, they were able to tell me there and then that I had no inflammation. They took biopsy to confirm. Honestly it’s not that bad, I had no sedation for mine. ....I actually looked up procedure on YouTube which calmed me down, realised I was Going to be less exposed than I thought.

The only sore part was when they put wind up, felt like cramps but the actively encourage to fart it out to ease the pain. Thinking of you xx

TalkingOutOfMyBottom · 05/08/2020 15:39

How are you feeling today @binkyblinky? Mine was afternoon and I feel a bit wiped out.

Lookyloo · 05/08/2020 17:43

Pain bad again for me today so have requested a GP call back via 111 online.

SammySays · 05/08/2020 17:48

I’ve had several and can honestly say it’s not that bad at all. I’ve never had sedation and only had pain killers for the last one I had because the dr insisted. The worst is by far trying to swallow down the prep drink and will also say the air in your tummy afterwards is a bit uncomfortable. It’s a procedure that sounds a far scarier than in it. Wish you all the best Smile
