Do you remember being a child?

I have absolutely no memories until the age of about 9 or 10. Even memories I have of that age are few and far between.

My nan always tells me stories of ‘when I was 3 my mum blah blah...’ she thinks there’s something wrong with me I don’t remember anything?!

YABU - I have memories from a young age 3,4,5...

YANBU - I cant remember much, if anything from childhood.

Not really an AIBU, but generally intrigued.

Yes I do. I have quite a good memory of my childhood from around 3 years old.

VashtaNerada · 01/08/2020 21:26

It does seem to vary from person to person. I have memories right back to being in a cot but most people’s seem to start at around three.

wanderings · 01/08/2020 21:26

I remember childhood vividly from about four years old, but talking to my peers, it seems this is quite unusual.

Feralkidsatthecampsite · 01/08/2020 21:27

I had a nasty accident at 4.9 and remember it clearly.. Also remember going to dggf house before I was school age and me and dm finding him dead...

TellingTelephone · 01/08/2020 21:28

I don't. I have had CBT counselling before and the counsellor asked if I thought most people could remember much before the age of 11. I decided that I thought it was unlikely but who knows. I often 'memory dump' though and cannot remember things I ought to.

Gin4thewin · 01/08/2020 21:28

I have memory's from nursery, fleeting, very minor, almost flashes. Would of been 3 or 4 i guess

OhTheRoses · 01/08/2020 21:29

Interesting.
DS doesn't remember before DD or being an only but remembers meeting her in hospital and getting her gifts. He was 3yrs 5mths.

DD remembers her cot bars - she was out of before 3.

They both occasionally have earlier flashbacks.

Pillypocket666 · 01/08/2020 21:29

DP remembers from high chair o! I remember nothing.

Angel2702 · 01/08/2020 21:30

Yes I can remember from around 21 months just before my brother was born. I have very clear memories of my entire childhood. My husband however cannot remember anything, couldn’t even remember his primary school. I always found it odd how little he remembered. I met him when he was 16 so he can only remember a few years before we met.

Sparklesocks · 01/08/2020 21:30

I do, but it’s mainly patches from here and there - I’m not always sure how old I am in my memories, but I know I’m little in some.

SierraHotel · 01/08/2020 21:30

My first memory is my sister being born, I was 8, I don't remember anything before that.

perfumeistooexpensive · 01/08/2020 21:31

I remember being in my pram, being pushed round town and left in it in the garden to have a nap. This was before I was 18 months.

Eatyourbanana · 01/08/2020 21:31

So interesting. I wonder what makes some people remember & others forget? I’m pretty gutted I can’t remember anything! I would love to remember days out Etc from that young age.

Yes, I can remember lots of things from about aged three onwards.

Mmsnet101 · 01/08/2020 21:32

I often wonder this as I don't remember much before about 8yo...but then my early childhood would have been quite traumatic based on what my older brother has filled in over the years, so I never know if it's because of this or normal!

soupey1 · 01/08/2020 21:32

I remember a few odd things from age 3 - 5, but mostly from when I was at school and onwards.

HellsBills · 01/08/2020 21:33

Earliest very clear memory is going to hospital to visit my mum/meet my new baby sister I would have been 4. I remember quite a bit about primary school and childhood so I suppose YABU.

MondeoFan · 01/08/2020 21:33

Yes lots of memories from the age of 4 at nursery, 5-7 at infant school and lots of memories from junior school and and playing out in the street. Memories of grandparents and how their houses looked, sweets I bought, ice cream van etc

Mum2jenny · 01/08/2020 21:34

I remember quite a lot but my parents said that a lot of stuff I remembered was incorrect as it put them in a bad light. But I still think it was true memories.

Angel2702 · 01/08/2020 21:34

My children so far also remember everything. Last year my 13 year old remembered my great Aunt’s flat and playing on her piano and running down the hallway listening to his voice echo. My Great Aunt died when he 22 months old. I couldn’t believe the detail he had remembered.

katy1213 · 01/08/2020 21:34

Flickers of memory from around 2; one very exciting day that I remember vividly was just before I was three. And from three on, pretty much normal _ conversations, people, things that interested/puzzled me.

OhTheRoses · 01/08/2020 21:34

I remember going to nursery for the first time. Patent TBars counting cracks in the paving stones. Remember meeting my best friend in the "playground and her saying "will you be my friend"? Also remember naughtily going in the toy cupboard and cutting my palm on a rusty pram and being told off. My mother remembers the infection and dressings - I don't. Gosh imagine a rusty toy pram in the toy cupboard nowadays.

Just remembered ds does remember being told off at playgroup before dd was born.

ASandwichNamedKevin · 01/08/2020 21:35

I have very vivid memories with lots of detail from about age 3, and can recall lots of things from my first year of primary school, just like watching a film, very clearly. I remember the name of all the children in my class, in the order it was called out on the roll every day, and their faces.
I remember lots of clothes I had, shoes or coats I picked out. I remember lots of day trips and where we went. But things like Christmases I can remember but not distinguish very well.
DH can't remember much before age 9 or 10.

Commentutappelles · 01/08/2020 21:36

My first proper memories start when my brother was born, I was 22 months. However, I once mentioned to my DM about my car seat being an unusual colour for car seats (red) and she was quite gobsmacked as apparently I had only had it up until I was 1.

AWhistlingWoman · 01/08/2020 21:36

Remember a lot of my childhood very vividly, particularly from 3 to about 10. My adult memories are very pale and insipid by comparison!
