AIBU to let them camp on an island overnight?

(Inspired by another thread)

We are on holiday in the Lake District. Lovely cottage. DH is working away. DC's have seen a lovely island and want to go camping there for a few nights. Light a campfire, cook for themselves. They'll get there by sailing boat. Youngest is 6 and oldest is 14.

Would you let them go?

I do love to galumph!

PablosHoney · 01/08/2020 19:39

Don’t feel embarrassed that we didn’t realise it was nonsense about a kids book 🤪

WhatifIfeellikeacat · 01/08/2020 19:41

They're quite responsible but you need to be a responsible adult. Anything can happen. If they can go there by boat so can do and someone else.

Scoobyscoobedydoo · 01/08/2020 19:42

I am sure their Daddy thinks none of them will get drowned, and that if any of them do get drowned it’s a good riddance Grin

FlamedToACrisp · 01/08/2020 19:45

@Albern @Antirrhinum or do you mean seed cake? With a jar of homemade lemonade if Cook lets Peggy and Nancy have some.

FlamedToACrisp · 01/08/2020 19:49

Shock Coots in the North is available on Ebay... for £46.99 !!!! I'm glad I already have a copy - wish I'd bought a few extras!

MsTSwift · 01/08/2020 19:50

As long as Uncle Quentin is within 10 miles should be ok

ineedaholidaynow · 01/08/2020 19:51

@FlamedToACrisp that is why I always wish I bought a copy years ago when I saw it, at a normal price!

ScrapThatThen · 01/08/2020 19:52

The only question you should ask is how would I feel explaining my decision to children's social care.

SixesAndEights · 01/08/2020 19:52

I bought mine when it first came out, have got all of the books in hardback with the proper covers, and various other Swallows and Amazons themed books. Roger Wardale and Christina Hardiments are good.

There's also an Arthur Ransome Society based in Kendal of which I've been a member on and off over the years!

Twiningalldaylong · 01/08/2020 19:53

Better drowned than duffers ( sorry sure that's been said a thousand times or more Smile)

SixesAndEights · 01/08/2020 19:54

@ScrapThatThen

Well you see, it was like this, their father's in the Navy and said if they drowned it would serve them right, so I thought it'd be okay as long as each morning one of the kids rowed over to a farm and got a couple of pints of milk.
ineedaholidaynow · 01/08/2020 19:55

@Twiningalldaylong not as much as comments along the line of "how could you possibly think it is safe' !

chomalungma · 01/08/2020 19:55

I wonder what people would think if they actually wanted to camp on the island?

Peel Island is real. It belongs to the National Trust.

I can really imagine sailing there and just camping there for a night.

SixesAndEights · 01/08/2020 19:56

I find it very depressing that 85% of people think you're being unreasonable OP!

Dogsaresomucheasier · 01/08/2020 19:56

This has made me think, how come the Famous Five had a spiffing adventure every school holiday but didn’t get any older?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 01/08/2020 19:57

This is really making me want to read the books again.

The posters who aren't getting it are supplying both the best and worst posts of the thread.

WaxOnFeckOff · 01/08/2020 19:57

I didn't think you were allowed to wild camp in England unless you own the land of course - is it your island OP?

And agree with everyone else. Don't get me wrong, I think it would be a wonderful adventure and the chances of something going seriously wrong are very small but if it did, you'd be judged responsible for that and neglectful.

Sadik · 01/08/2020 19:57

@SixesAndEights I'd recommend constantlearner's fics - I particularly like her Provincial Lady crossover

WaxOnFeckOff · 01/08/2020 19:58

Ah, so these are fictional DC?

In that case fire away and give them a few bottles of pop and some tucker to take with them.

chomalungma · 01/08/2020 19:58

is it your island OP

Shall I tell them?

OP posts:
ineedaholidaynow · 01/08/2020 19:59

@chomalungma I remember the sheer excitement I felt the first time I went to the Lake District, I would have been about 14, to think I was in Swallows and Amazons country Smile

DappledThings · 01/08/2020 20:00

@IceCreamSummer20

How are people so lazy as to not engage past the OP before diving in. I honestly don’t see the humour in this at all?!
That's fair enough. But you don't need to find it funny and/or get the reference to realise it isn't serious.
chomalungma · 01/08/2020 20:01

@ineedaholidaynow

Many years ago, I hired a dinghy and sailed to Peel Island. Because it had to be done.

OP posts:
DappledThings · 01/08/2020 20:01

And agree with everyone else
Apart from the roughly 70% of "everyone else" who realised it wasn't serious.
