AIBU to let them camp on an island overnight?

(Inspired by another thread)

We are on holiday in the Lake District. Lovely cottage. DH is working away. DC's have seen a lovely island and want to go camping there for a few nights. Light a campfire, cook for themselves. They'll get there by sailing boat. Youngest is 6 and oldest is 14.

Would you let them go?

beautifully written

Reading as an adult, I really appreciate the background information on the life of the Lakes and the Broads - the charcoal burners, the wherries and so on. Social history as well as children's adventure storirs.

Witchend, I loved Malcolm Saville as a child, but I think if I re-read today I'd want to throttle the twins.

Alexandernevermind · 01/08/2020 18:57

Assuming this is serious, then hell no - and I'm very much one for letting the children go ferel. The 14 yo with a friend, no problem whatsoever, but not the 6yo.

@womanaf

This is a fascinating insight into how people read literally no part of a thread before they post.
👍

It's never too late @MrsPotatoHeadsSheeWee.

I bet I'd still enjoy them.

ArthurRansomwithane · 01/08/2020 18:58

Absolutely no problem, just watch out for the Amazons

mrsBtheparker · 01/08/2020 18:58

'Better drowned than duffers, if not duffers won't drown'

Sadly not allowed these days!

CaptainNancy · 01/08/2020 18:58

Nope. No Ruths around here Grin

I think their pemmican was canned corned beef wasn't it?
I like the cave in Swallowdale, the bit with the charcoal burners, and the mining with Timothy best. Winter Holiday too.

ineedaholidaynow · 01/08/2020 18:58

@saleorbouy they could be contactable by morse code or semaphore

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 01/08/2020 18:59

Is there a lighthouse to signal a pasding Uboat?

SockYarn · 01/08/2020 18:59

Also make sure they have red and green melamine plates to use as port/starboard lights if they get lost.

Loved those books.

ineedaholidaynow · 01/08/2020 18:59

Loved the idea of Timothy the Armadillo Grin

Passing

Iwantacampervan · 01/08/2020 18:59

This is making me want to read the whole series again - I have them all.

EBlyton · 01/08/2020 19:00

Absolutely just be careful of those swarthy fellows

AnneOfQueenSables · 01/08/2020 19:01

Does the island belong to you? If so, save some time. Call the police now and tell them to head over. Get a lawyer to split the ownership of the island between all the DCs . Enrol your DD in school and have a closer look at that replacement housekeeper you're considering.

ineedaholidaynow · 01/08/2020 19:02

@Iwantacampervan I am currently eying up my very bartered copy of Winter Holiday to read for the umpteenth time.
Do you have a copy of the final unfinished book, where all the children meet up, I have never managed to get a copy of that?

hilariousnamehere · 01/08/2020 19:02

Oh this has made me smile. I reread the first few earlier this year, will have to get the others out now.

Is there a tree they can use as a lookout/lighthouse OP?!

DappledThings · 01/08/2020 19:02

Literally 10 seconds on the thread would show you it isn't serious and is in fact a reference to a well-beloved book.

How are people so lazy as to not engage past the OP before diving in.

CaptainNancy · 01/08/2020 19:02

Me too Iwantacampervan. I'm not sure how Missee Lee will stand up though in modern times. I imagine there are some rather crude characatures in that book, but it's been so long I can't remember.

LakieLady · 01/08/2020 19:03

@MissSarahThane, a friend of mine owned a class of boat called a Broads cruiser, same shape and rigging as a wherry but a lot smaller (30-35 feet). We used to go sailing a couple of times a year, it was fabulous.

Because they don't have noisy engines, you see loads of wildlife as you glide along, including seals, who are very curious and will swim along beside you.

mrsBtheparker · 01/08/2020 19:03

I always wondered what they did about going to the loo!

Much the same as we did on long days on a bus round India, bush stops, ladies to one side of the road, gentlemen to the other.

CaptainNancy · 01/08/2020 19:05

Ineedaholidaynow what is this final book called please?

ineedaholidaynow · 01/08/2020 19:06

@CaptainNancy Missee Lee was my least favourite book, never read it when I reread the others.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 01/08/2020 19:06

I'm sure Mrs Dixon will let them have milk. They'll be fine

wilynectarine · 01/08/2020 19:08
