AIBU to let them camp on an island overnight?

(Inspired by another thread)

We are on holiday in the Lake District. Lovely cottage. DH is working away. DC's have seen a lovely island and want to go camping there for a few nights. Light a campfire, cook for themselves. They'll get there by sailing boat. Youngest is 6 and oldest is 14.

Would you let them go?

@elephantoverthehill

PablosHoney ok you seem to be a bit pissed off, but the premise of the book is quite a good AIBU.
Good thing I didn't mention moving to the countryside to home school the children because DH has been framed for treason...

It's lovely to see how many people get the reference. But as @DappledThings said the name of the book was mentioned very early on and we are now 10 pages in, so surely people should at least read some of the posts

HeronLanyon · 01/08/2020 22:45

Op don’t get your bloomers in a twist ! You may have need of them.

ineedaholidaynow · 01/08/2020 22:45

@chomalungma don't start me on that one, as there will be tears

PablosHoney · 01/08/2020 22:47

Not having read the book, skimming the OP would make no difference and I fail to see how that makes others tripped up by it stupid, it’s just so grim.

GreatAuntMaria · 01/08/2020 22:48

And imagine the reaction if you'd said you let them walk along the railway!

ineedaholidaynow · 01/08/2020 22:49

@PablosHoney but you would know people were talking about a book so know that the OP wasn't actually planning to leave children on an island

PablosHoney · 01/08/2020 22:49

Oh tee hee, imagine 😍😂

chomalungma · 01/08/2020 22:49

I actually am impressed though that some people would let the 14 yr old go!!

That would be pretty cool.

Thank you amicissima, the first line of S&A has been going through my head since the start of the thread. "Roger, aged 7 and no longer the youngest of the family...." I think 7 seemed a lot older to me when reading them as a 10 year old than it does now as the mother of a nearly 6 year old!

DappledThings · 01/08/2020 22:50

I said skim the first bit of the thread, not just the OP, that's the point.

The only thing that makes posters look silly is failing to read anything other than the OP. It's sheer laziness and an arrogance that your opinion is so important it isn't worth engaging with any of the thread before jumping in to post it.

PablosHoney · 01/08/2020 22:52

Yes I read the thread, no I didn’t get the references as I haven’t read the book. When I realised it was about a book it was too late to retract my ‘stupid’ and ‘illiterate’ assumptions. It’s infra dig, mean spirited and sad.

PablosHoney · 01/08/2020 22:55

And the arrogance isn’t on the part of those who haven’t read the book..

Or a mildly amusing thread about the different attitudes of the 1930s to today?

At least some people would let the older children go.

There have been other threads like this where a scenario has been posted, multiple people have quickly referenced something I've never heard of and it's been "outed" as fictional very quickly. When I haven't heard of the book/show/whatever I've shrugged and moved on. It's quite a leap to take it as a personal insult.

The fact that there are multiple references to "Swallows and Amazons" so quickly make it blindingly obvious that it is a joke about something and not a real scenario even if you don't know what that something is.

I haven't read the book either.
But love the film.

Spot on, DappledThings.

I might even say glory be to God for dappled things! Smile

@PablosHoney

Send your husband a telegram
And I think you got it within a few minutes...
OP posts:
ineedaholidaynow · 01/08/2020 23:01

@chomalungma you mustn't get half the references either then, if you haven't read any of the books!

PablosHoney · 01/08/2020 23:01

Maybe you should re read the thread. Being called illiterate and stupid as a result of misunderstanding Is rude and arrogant. I made my assumption on page 1.

chomalungma · 01/08/2020 23:02

I know the titles!

And can guess some of them

OP posts:
PablosHoney · 01/08/2020 23:02

I have never read Swallows and Amazons, if you actually quote my first comment OP that much would be apparent

chomalungma · 01/08/2020 23:03

I think that some people are referring to the comments much later on in the thread.

From people who clearly haven't read the thread.

I read your comments.

However - your 'telegram' comment was remarkably good and would have been perfect.

Send DH a telegram. I think you know what he would have said.

Doesn’t make it any the less unpleasant and supercilious, I’m glad you’re enjoying a reference to a beloved book but the humiliation of people that didn’t get it, naaah not so much.
