Certain food for certain nights?

I don't mean a regular weekly menu, I am talking about weekday food and slightly nicer weekend food. I'm laughing at my own weirdness at making a Sunday roast type dinner ( misread dates so needs cooked tonight) and thinking it's not a Sat night meal but if it was Sunday I'd be all over it. Tell me it's not just me who has the food rituals 🤔

We always have certain meals on certain nights. Need quick to cook meal on a Monday, mainly roast on Sunday, Wednesday is usually kids pizza night etc .. makes meal planning easier!

SamSeabornforPresident · 01/08/2020 19:04

Definitely. Roast only on a Sunday. Pizza on Friday. There are certain things (stir fry/spag Bol/chicken casserole) that are too 'everyday' for Saturday. Likewise, I'd not have a nice steak on a 'normal' weekday. No point to any of these rules but 🤷🏻‍♀️

Queenfreak · 01/08/2020 19:08

Saturday night we have pizza and ice cream. The world could be coming to an end, and if I didnt have pizza and ice cream I would be very upset.
Other than that it depends on how I feel, usually a roast sundays.

Daisychains20 · 01/08/2020 19:09

Always brought up to have a roast on a Sunday, to have it any other day seems strange to me. Someone I know has kid that only eats roast dinners so they have a roast randomly on a week night. When ever she says ‘I’m just cooking a roast’ I feel like screaming it’s Monday!!!!Grin

Friday and Saturday nights use to be what we call good dinner nights as in a takeaway or a treat dinner cooked that isn’t too healthy Winkbut since lockdown has begun it’s all gone tits up, don’t know what day of the week we are on let alone is it special dinner night!Grin

CremeEggThief · 01/08/2020 19:11

Definitely. I would feel really weird eating pizza on a mid-week night or a Sunday roast during the week, unless it was leftovers from it the day after, or New Year's Day!

Lsquiggles · 01/08/2020 19:16

Oh I totally feel the same Grin having a roast with all the trimmings on any day other than Sunday feels wrong. I always make sure that we eat the nicest meals on Friday and Saturday too, as they're the 'best' days, and we can't possibly have a boring dinner on those days Blush

Eeeeeeeok · 01/08/2020 19:18

My grandparents in their 80s do this. I think of it as quite an old fashioned thing! They eat quite traditional meals so mince and dumplings on Wednesday, fish on Fri and roast on Sunday are a few examples.

MysweetAudrina · 01/08/2020 19:20

I had a hankering for a roast yesterday so did a chicken, stuffing, roasties, mash, gravy, carrots and broccoli. It was lovely but not something I would normally bother with on a Friday night.

thisstooshallpass · 01/08/2020 19:20

Sunday for roast. I wouldn't eat or cook anything other than a roast.

Friday/Saturday - something requiring effort. Curry and all the trimmings, slow cooked ragu, something I've seen on tv/in a book

Weekdays - a vegetarian pasta, a tray bake, something in the slow cooker

Runbitchrun · 01/08/2020 19:23

Yep, roast on a Sunday and Fridays are for dinners that we eat on the sofa - pizza, chicken nuggets, etc.

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 01/08/2020 19:23

Sunday Roast, Monday shepherds pie or curry depending on Sunday meat.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/08/2020 19:24

In normal times yes, as it's around work, activities etc. But at the moment, not so much. BBQs tend to be on DHs day off, but he had random days off not weekends for the first few months. We have burritos or fajitas on shopping nights, as it easy to keep warm if I'm delayed (whereas I don't normally shop in the evenings, but we aren't taking the DDs into supermarkets at present).

userabcname · 01/08/2020 19:25

Nope, never done this. Will happily have a roast on a weekday, a takeaway on a week night, generally just go with whatever we fancy. I would feel far too restricted having to have certain foods on certain nights and would be less likely to want/eat it. I do roughly meal plan as in I have ingredients for enough dinners to last me til the next shop but they can be eaten in any order (taking into account expiry dates ofc).

Elouera · 01/08/2020 19:26

I agree, its something my grandparents era did!

DH always brings up fish on fridays, more because he likes the fish and chips from the local shop, rather than being any religious reason. We each whatever, or any night though.

Roasts and larger, more elborate meals are usually on a Sunday due to the extra time you have too cook. We often do a have a roast on Sunday, but equally, not a necessity and could equally have left overs of something simple.

Ragwort · 01/08/2020 19:35

Not really, Saturday is usually something very simple as I work all day & don't want to come and start cooking something 'complicated', also DH & DS are usually late home due to playing cricket. I like a roast on a Sunday but again it has to fit round occasionally working, sporting activities etc & I am the only one that really enjoys a roast (have been known to cook one just for myself if the others are out Grin).

purplecorkheart · 01/08/2020 19:36

Nope it can be literally anything any night of the week and we often have a midweek roast.

BrutusMcDogface · 01/08/2020 19:40

I grew up with roasts on Sunday at lunchtime and then an amazing tea of treat foods like crisps and dip and bits from the deli. I guess that kind of food isn’t really considered “treat“ food now, but sometimes I wish we had that tradition in my house. We can’t, due to son’s football matches, but I suppose we could do it the other way round.

thistimelastweek · 01/08/2020 19:43

We free wheel in the week. Saturday tends to be curry/chilli/moussaka. Sundays are roasts.

Coulddowithanap · 01/08/2020 19:43

Our son went through a period of only liking roast dinner or chicken nuggets, so we had roast most days (although sometimes it would be what i called a cheat roast as it would be chicken breast with small roasted potatoes as they cooked quicker)

Pjsandbaileys · 01/08/2020 19:51

I only 40 so not quite at the grandparent 75+ bracket just yet lol. I suppose I tend to have a roast on a Sunday as we are all home and it's nice to get busy teens around the table and chat about the week. Would only get a takeaway on a Friday or Saturday just seems a bit extravagant mid week I like to sit down and enjoy it with a glass of something, rest of the week is just stirfry/pasta/salad no set pattern to that Grin

We've been doing weekly menu more since lockdown helps differentiate weekdays and weekends. Make your pizza Tuesday, burgers on Wed , fishy Friday, pastries for Sunday breakfast type stuff. Not everything pre planned but enough to give a sense of regularity.

iklboo · 01/08/2020 20:07

I'd feel weird having a roast mid-week too. Pavlovian reaction maybe.

I absolutely, resolutely refuse to eat fish on Good Friday. I'm not and have never been Christian but this was foisted on me for years until I started saying no thank you. Finny (Finnan) haddock & boiled potatoes. Bleurgh.

iklboo · 01/08/2020 20:08

Oooh that's reminded me! Saturday tea when when grandparents came round was either boiled ham or tinned red salmon (with the bones) salad with brown bread & butter cut diagonally Grin.

mbosnz · 01/08/2020 20:11

23 years, we had Spag Bos' every Monday. I miss Spag Bos' every Monday, but the young 'uns got all opinionated! Now it could be Spag Bos, lasagne, spaghetti and meatballs - but it will be pasta. . .

Oly4 · 01/08/2020 20:15

Roast on Sunday, something lavish on Fridays like Chinese or curry. Freewheel then rest of the week
