Certain food for certain nights?

I don't mean a regular weekly menu, I am talking about weekday food and slightly nicer weekend food. I'm laughing at my own weirdness at making a Sunday roast type dinner ( misread dates so needs cooked tonight) and thinking it's not a Sat night meal but if it was Sunday I'd be all over it. Tell me it's not just me who has the food rituals 🤔

I’ve seen lots of consumer research on this.

Generally, we try and eat healthily at the beginning of the week but run out of willpower at the weekend. We have more time on Sunday so are more likely to create sit down family meals.

In our house, that mostly rings true. We are much more likely to have a roast dinner on Sunday. We are much more likely to have a takeaway or a shop-bought pizza on a Friday.

I don't think any food is off limits during the week - as long as it takes less than 1 hour to cook.

But on a Saturday I like to eat someone a bit special - although what that means is rather vague - pizza or takeaway as an example

Weekends are different in our house because DH cooks. So it's always something that he likes to make, often a roast or toad in the hole on Sunday and paella or steak and chips on a Saturday, but he does mix it up and can turn his hand to anything really.

Wednesday night is often deliveroo fish and chips.

All of us, including dd, share the cooking and we each have specialty dishes that we make but not tied to specific days so much.

iolaus · 01/08/2020 20:40

Not really (though this may partially be due to random shifts over every day so it's not that every weekend I'm off)

It used to be Wednesday were pizza night, but that was only because it worked with the kids and various clubs which were all the one night, now they don't all have different activities on the same night (plus two over 18s who may or may not be home for dinner) that does happen

A roast dinner would 99% of the time on a Sunday - but not the majority of Sundays

Fish on Friday. Feels “wrong” any other night (yes, I do know that isn’t logical!)

Monday is a “hectic” day so 92

Rosebel · 01/08/2020 20:44

Saturday night is take away and Sunday is always a roast. Usually have something nice like steak or fish on Friday. Rest of the week can be anything really. Never realized how predictable our meals are until now😂

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 01/08/2020 20:55

We always have more “fun” dinners on a Friday and Saturday, sometimes a takeaway. On a Sunday it needs to be something that goes into Monday, so could be a roast chicken that will do risotto on Monday, but could just as easily be a curry or a chilli.

My dad worked shifts over seven days when I was a kid so we often didn’t have a big Sunday dinner because he was at work.

SteelyPanther · 01/08/2020 21:03

Friday night is something with chips - nice and easy.

ChavvySexPond · 01/08/2020 21:25

We have treatier food at the weekend. One of mine is learning how to make the basics ready for Uni and we were all "Oooh, noodles! Saturday night food on a Wednesday!"

MinnieJackson · 01/08/2020 21:27

When I was younger staying at friends house overnight I thought her parents were mental, they had their roast dinner on a SATURDAY night! The mad bastards! Then left over roast potatoes and reheated gravy for Sunday breakfast Confused

weegiemum · 01/08/2020 21:36

We usually have a roast on Sunday as it's the night most of us are in and dd1 and her dp can come round often. Then Monday is often made from leftovers - chicken pie, or gammon bake.

We've fallen in to having takeout on Friday or Saturday (sometimes bothBlush) and the rest of the week I try to cook something easy - I'm disabled and going through a rough patch right now.

Easy things are like fajitas or bolognaise or lasagna or homemade burgers. Quite often a bit too much for me if I'm honest, but I'm not ready to give up yet!!

Rockbird · 01/08/2020 21:41

Roast or something more involved on Sundays. Fishy Friday and something easy on Saturdays like homemade pizza or freezer surprise. I've really got into meal planning since lockdown.

mrsbyers · 01/08/2020 23:31

We are much more likely to have a (rare) takeaway during the week than at the weekend as more time to spend in the kitchen on a Saturday or Sunday. Roast dinner on a Sunday probably once every couple of months as just don’t see the appeal of them - but we do cook and eat quite well most nights
