Hot weather - cruelty to dogs

GreyGardens88 · 31/07/2020 12:06

If I saw an old beagle being dragged through Regents Park at noon on a 35 degree day and it was staggering and panting WIBU to say something to the owner?

Yes I think you should say something, this dog could easily get heat stroke in those conditions.

User87471643901065319 · 31/07/2020 12:10

They might be dragging it to get back home/to a car to drive home because they've realised it is too hot out for the dog. They may have water with them too.

What would you contemplate saying?

KetoPenguin · 31/07/2020 12:10

In fact if it was staggering and panting it needs to be cooled off urgently and taken to the vet.

TimeWastingButFun · 31/07/2020 12:15

It makes me so angry to see dogs out in this heat. We went for a walk yesterday lunchtime, deliberately leaving our dog at home, and there were two black labs there when we got there (at least 30 min walk from anywhere). The people were sitting out in the open, even though they could have sat in the shade of the trees. On the way back we saw two very hot and panting golden retrievers. What is wrong with people 😢

GreyGardens88 · 31/07/2020 12:19

It wasn't being dragged as such but it was struggling to walk and the owner was walking ahead telling it to go quicker

It's awful.

I'm a dog walker and I was out at 7.30 this morning. Later, I then drove past the beach to get home (around 11am) and they were people dragging their dogs down onto the sand, chucking balls for them, setting up picnics etc (so clearly planning to stay a while). I wanted to scream. It's cruel and dogs die in the heat. If you want a day at the beach, leave your poor dog at home!

It's 26 degrees here. My dog is indoors, in the shade, in front of the fan!

Iwalkinmyclothing · 31/07/2020 12:24

It depends, what were you planning to say?

hiredandsqueak · 31/07/2020 12:24

Around here people tend to walk dogs early when there is heat forecast. I went at 7am this morning and there were loads of people and dogs out on the trails and fields. Ddog is currently sunning herself in front of the glass in the front door and is likely to stay there until the sun moves round when she will plonk herself in front of the doors at the back to catch some more sun.

PerfectPenquins · 31/07/2020 12:25

I wish people out with dogs on such hot days could be fined in the spot and sent home. It's so wrong and selfish.

englishrosie · 31/07/2020 12:25

Yes you would be unreasonable as not everyone has a garden and dogs don’t stop pissing and shitting just because it’s hot.

GreyGardens88 · 31/07/2020 12:25

I was just planning on saying that it's far too hot for that dog

We have a Shiba pup, she had two walks by 8am today, we are going to the park later, but we’re taking him in a neighbours babboe bike and we’ve got a shade if we can’t find a space under a tree. So he’ll be just as shaded as he is now on the balcony.

englishrosie · 31/07/2020 12:26

And not everyone can just let their dog out as some have recall issues etc..... so I think you should mind your own business tbh as you don’t know how long that person has been out for! That may be the nearest green space. My dog only will wee/poo on grass lol.

BrokenBrit · 31/07/2020 12:26

Absolutely awful.
Dogs won’t die from missing a walk but many dogs have died from being walked in excess heat. I would say something and have before, the pavement was like lava and someone was dragging a black lab around, his paws must of been blistered And he was at risk of heatstroke Angry.

SimonJT · 31/07/2020 12:26

I live in a flat, so no garden. When my dog needs the toilet in hot weather it involves no more than 10-15m of outdoor walking.

If you were taking your dog to the toilet, you wouldn't be dragging them through Regents Park Hmm

Good advice here.

Runbitchrun · 31/07/2020 12:30

I’ve just driven my kids somewhere and lost count of how many dogs were being walked on pavements on the way. It’s 29 degrees here currently and I’m gobsmacked that people are still dumb enough to do this.

I walked mine at 8.30 this morning and to be honest it was too hot then, I should have gone earlier. He won’t go out now until after 6pm and then to somewhere with water so he can swim.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 31/07/2020 12:32

I suppose someone who cares would know that already and would either not be there, or be able to explain to you they had realised that and were trying to get the dog to a cooler place with shade/ water etc asap, and someone who doesn't care would ignore you/ be aggressive towards you. I don't see what the benefit would be tbh.
dontdisturbmenow · 31/07/2020 12:45

The hot dog brigade are really tedious.

Of course you should leave a dog in scar when it's hot.

Of course you shouldn't walk on the asphalt when it's burning,

And of course you should take precaution when it's very hot but taking a dog out for 15mns, keeping as much as possible to the shade (knowing that being lower, they are more likely to be under the shade than us), giving plenty of water is not dog cruelty.

Of course a dog will pant at times, like us, they do if they run, it doesn't mean we're all about to collapse.

Its the typical British 'OMG, it's so hot, we should stop all activity when the temp passes 28 degrees'. I guess Portuguese dogs don't get to go out at all May to October!

lancashirelady · 31/07/2020 13:00

Portuguese dogs are aclimatised to the temperature, much the same as dogs in spain and any other hot country. Dogs in the uk aren't and yes dogs can and have died from the heat. So no not a typical British "OMG,it's so hot, we should stop all activity when the temp passes 28 degrees". More a typcal British attitude of caring for the welfare of dogs when they see them struggling.

frankie001 · 31/07/2020 13:21

It’s 34 here and the dogs are in front of the fan. I don’t walk them if it’s over 22, and even then it’s a walk in shade by water.

theemmadilemma · 31/07/2020 13:22

I effectively lost £10 today in exercise field bookings and will likely deal with grumpy dogs at some point because it will be gone 9pm before we venture out. Rather that though.

crosstalk · 31/07/2020 13:50

Came across this on a northern beach, baking temperatures. A group of people came down with children and a beagle pup. While they slathered themselves and their children in sun protection and opened their waters and beers, they tied said pup ironically to the cooler they'd brought. I left the pup my dogs water in a plastic food container. I'd love to say he lapped it up immediately but he was so excited to have someone coming over to pay him attention he nearly knocked it over.

On the other hand I was walking my dog in the same hot weather down to a stream. I was reprimanded by a veterinary nurse to say it was too hot for paws. I was barefoot and walking in the shade. But it did make me think, so no bad.

Wolfiefan · 31/07/2020 13:57

It’s the overweight elderly black labs that break my heart. Seem to be quite a few round here!
I fed the dogs at 6:30 and we went out as soon after their breakfast settled as I could. Still so hot we stayed in the shade and they pottered for a sniff.
Fan on here. For the dogs! Grin
