malificent7 · 31/07/2020 10:03

I am in a grump as i have workmen outside installing high speed broadband for the whole street.
My house stinks ofc tarmac and road is dug up.
There is nowt wrong with my broadband now although sometimes it drops off at peak times. Why does everything have to be so fast.
Is it worth these noisy workmen disturbing my peace?!

Because the times, they are a-changing.

bloodywhitecat · 31/07/2020 10:28

Because our broadband was so crap that I couldn't upload photographs, then high speed broadband came to town and we could watch stuff on catch up, upload photos etc with ease. If your broadband is already OK I can kinda understand your frustrations today but in our case it has been a game changer.

OneForMeToo · 31/07/2020 10:30

Because the supposed best kept cutting out and was laggy as hell. Where as my gigafast is amazing. Worth a bit of hassle while the path was dug up.

Why is everyone always so angry at a minor inconvenience that is actually better for the long term 😏

Bitchinkitchen · 31/07/2020 10:31

Because so many people are working from home, so having internet that drops out randomly costs people money??

welcometohell · 31/07/2020 10:32

Broadband dropping out at peak times might be a minor inconvenience to you, but for people working remotely from home it's a real problem.

RedRumTheHorse · 31/07/2020 10:32

Unfortunately it is being done on a very hot day but it is worth it. When you eventually want to upgrade your internet in a few years time you will be able to.

Bitchinkitchen · 31/07/2020 10:33

Also, infrastructure improvements are vital to a functional society. You wouldn't be happy with a phone line that dropped out sometimes, or electricity that went off at peak times, or taps that only ran water when it wasn't too busy. Periodic improvements are the way to go - have you never heard the saying "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" ??

Aragog · 31/07/2020 10:43

More people are working my from home and more households need to be able to run multiple devices at a time at present.

Fast internet is needed right now, and not one dropping out at peak time, if you need to work and study at home.

For those people it will definitely be worth the noise and hassle.

This

Believe it or not, you aren’t the only person on your street and you probably hold the minority view.

JustCallMeGriffin · 31/07/2020 11:59

My broadband is being hammered by my husband and I trying to work from home at the same time. Getting the children online for learning at the same time as us working was near impossible.

But of course we should just fuck off because it's inconvenient for you to have a couple of days of workmen outside your house!

You'd probably complain at them fixing a gas leak too Hmm

TheFlis12345 · 31/07/2020 12:19

You can’t understand why people who need fast internet to make a living don’t want to be inconvenienced by it dropping on a regular basis, but you don’t think it’s ok that you have been inconvenienced with a bit of noise and smell for a few days?!?

KeepingPlain · 31/07/2020 12:22

Yes it is worth it.

If you don't think it is, don't ask for access to it in the future and you can keep your slow Internet speeds while the rest of us keep up with technology.

But you're still going to be inconvenienced for it. You can't change that.

LakieLady · 31/07/2020 12:27

We wouldn't have been able to both WFH if they hadn't put in HS broadband a few years ago. Even with it, the connection sometimes drops.

And think yourself lucky, OP: when Virgin Media installed cable, they dug up all the roads on our small estate. It took 10-12 weeks, they worked from 7am till 8pm in the evening, all day Saturdays and Sundays until 4pm. I was told by the council that there was nothing they could do as it was deemed essential highways work and they had all the necessary permits. The work finally finished on 23 December.

Come the second week in January, a new lot of workmen turned up and spent a month putting in new gas mains.

Komacho · 31/07/2020 12:29

I wish they wouldn't disturb me fixing potholes in the road, I don't need to get anywhere fast.

(I'm joking of course, they don't actually fix potholes around here.)

LakieLady · 31/07/2020 12:29

Afterthought: as I'd already been boycotting Branson and all his works for years, so I didn't even have the satisfaction of vowing never to give him a penny of my money ever again. Most frustrating.

LakieLady · 31/07/2020 13:13

@Bitchinkitchen, we used to get power cuts if it was very windy. As we're almost the highest point for miles around, that's a lot of the time. I got to be a dab hand at finding candles and matches in the dark, and then invested in a couple of headtorches.

Then they built a new substation and we only get very rare and very brief outages now. It was bloody frustrating though.

Jiggeriepokerie · 31/07/2020 13:18

Four people working from home means we need that fast connection otherwise we'd all be out of jobs.

Luckily Virgin did the upgrade here years ago and so now I can respond to this bloody daft post using 200mbps.

OneForMeToo · 31/07/2020 13:52

We used to be with virgin but my god it was terrible even at 200mbps.

DeeTractor · 31/07/2020 13:54

Just you stick to your dial up.

High speed broadband.....why do we want everything NOW?!

YABU - full stop.

FattyBoom · 31/07/2020 16:07

Because people have to work from home and can't do so with crap broadband

DominaShantotto · 31/07/2020 16:13

At the moment half the planet is working from home and needing better internet than they might have needed for a light spot of surfing, netflix and facebook on an evening.

We've got next year with DH working from home on conference calls and uploading big files to his work network and me doing university from home the bulk of the time streaming online content... we've just switched the connection onto fibre for that precise reason. If the schools close again we'll have the kids trying to do online learning as well.

The world's changed - if it's the new normal I'm at least doing it with a better up and download.

TheHighestSardine · 31/07/2020 16:14

Those poor workers, doing digging and tarmac in this weather.

CigarettesAndNoAlcohol · 31/07/2020 16:14

i wish they'd allow super fast broadband over here - work would be so much easier/reliable!!!! - i'm looking at you, you shower of shits at openreach!!!!
