Spelling Name Incorrectly

OdaMaeBrown · 31/07/2020 09:50

A colleague keeps spelling my name incorrectly. Think Ann/Anne Sara/Sarah Hanna/Hannah. I've politely pointed it out to her and she's just emailed again with the incorrect spelling.

Do I just leave it or do I correct her? It's not the end of the world but I do find it rude and annoying.

Her name is Mary so I can't really do it back!

Yes it was most peculiar and let to a lot of confusion which could have been avoided by spelling my name correctly.

ClaudiaWankleman · 31/07/2020 10:49

I think this is really rude, especially once it has been pointed out. Yes, some people's names are hard to spell, but when you are writing an email or on teams/ zoom or whatever, it is written in the address or on screen when you make contact.

It doesn't indicate respect for the person if you just don't care about their basic information.

TonyChestnut · 31/07/2020 10:55

Don't stoop to repeatedly miss-spelling her name; passive aggression is still aggression!

Do feel free to gently remind her each time she repeats her mistake until she spells it correctly - that would just be good manners on her part.

ReasonablyUnreasonable · 31/07/2020 10:57

I had a client who emailed me with my correct spelling several times, but then started spelling my name wrong. Nothing major, but changed a vowel which then changes the pronunciation of my name. I am used to people getting it wrong, think along the lines of Danielle which could be Daniella or Daniel or whatever bizarre attempts people come up with.

I eventually included in one of my emails that she was spelling my name wrong (I had a feeling she was doing it deliberately as she didn't understand the legal advice I was giving her). She ignored me, so I pointed it out again. She came back with 'it is just one letter'. Maybe it is, but it is my bloody name! I was so tempted to go back and changed one of the letters in her name, but sadly it would not have been professional!!

pussycatinboots · 31/07/2020 11:08

Stuff passive-aggressive!
She's doing it deliberately.

Call her Marie!
(or reply "Is this for me, as my name is not , and I'm not sure if you meant to send it to someone else?")

PencilSkirt · 31/07/2020 11:31

I would politely correct it. My name can be spelled in two ways and it invariably gets spelled incorrectly by at least one person in every workplace. Nobody has ever appeared to be upset by my politely correcting it.

PregnantAndTiredMum · 31/07/2020 11:38

@PencilSkirt op has already corrected her, it says so in the second sentence

peakygal · 31/07/2020 11:41

Keep correcting her until she learns. My DD has a name that's similar to another and all her life people have pronounced and spelled her name wrong and she didn't correct them. Now 17 she spends her time complaining that no one knows her proper name 🤷‍♀️

ArnoJambonsBike · 31/07/2020 11:55

I have a name that can be spelt wrong in the similar to Ann/Anne drives me made

Indeed. It's so annoying when people add/remove letters unnecessarily.

DappledThings · 31/07/2020 11:59

YANBU. I used to work with a Tracy Smith and a Tracey Smith. I could never remember which one was which so any time I emailed I checked so I got it right. It's basic manners.

SummerPoppies · 31/07/2020 12:04

My name is inevitably spelt incorrectly.
A lot of people pronounce it incorrectly too.
It doesn't bother me in the slightest.

OdaMaeBrown · 31/07/2020 12:12

@SummerPoppies

It wouldn't annoy you even after you've corrected them?

I know, but sometimes people need to be told more than once. I know I've had to repeat myself on this issue. Whilst it's annoying for those of us who experience this I can understand why it might not seem a priority for the person doing it and thus they may need reminding.

CaffiSaliMali · 31/07/2020 12:17

I have a Welsh name in England so get this a lot. Think Eleri but people spell it Elery/Elerie/Ellery/Elleri/Ellerie.

There is an autocorrect issue with my name, my real name is similar to a more common word and so autocorrect changes it. This is especially an issue for colleagues who use special software, for example my blind colleague always spells it wrong as his speech to text software gets it wrong.

I just keep signing emails off with Eleri and people who have made a one off mistake usually don't do it again.

I generally only point it out if the misspelling has caused an issue - for example if I haven't received an email because a colleague sent it to 'Elery@email' instead of Eleri@email by mistake.

I'm not sure what I would do with a repeat offender - maybe have a word with your manager, perhaps they can give a general reminder to everyone to take care to get people's names right?

I do plan to put a pronunciation guide to my name in my email signature next time I move to a new employer though as so many people keep pronouncing it wrong!

ReginaPhalangee · 31/07/2020 12:18

Happens all the time to me - to the extent that I didn't receive a series of very important emails because my email address was misspelt (name@...). Despite many emails with my actual name and the ability to just hit 'reply'.

Newdaynewname1 · 31/07/2020 12:22

Just ignore it. its either a honest mistake, or she’s doing it to get a reaction.
(my name is spelled incorrectly in my business email - i can’t be asked to change it)

titnomatani · 31/07/2020 12:23

Why are people so nervous tackling the situation head on in such cases? I'd sign off as Sara/h and then add in brackets (the 2/3/4/5/6/7, etc. time I've reminded you how to spell my name)

Greenhats10 · 31/07/2020 12:24

I've got a weird name, no one ever gets it right....life's too short. Maybe you can just make it into a personal joke between the two of you.

I do have a similar problem in reverse with a friend of mine - her kid's name is the same as my school's but spelt differently. And if I be honest, I have to check the spelling every single time. It's a matter of single/double letters -they can both be double, either one or none....and in my hand it's basically just disolved and i cant remember how to spell either of them correctly and probably never will. So in this case you dont know why she's getting it wrong....

Just let it go or make it into a joke in your head. I'd say not worth it, but no one has ever got my name right so i've got a thick skin by now

Greenhats10 · 31/07/2020 12:25

' my hand' - my head

Cryalot2 · 31/07/2020 12:26

I have one of those names mine ends with an e, but the common spelling is without. Or so it seems, that said I have got some rare versions over the year. The one on my Pets at home card takes the biscuit.
It used to bug me, now I just emphasise that it ends with an e and leave it that.
Some people have names in their and never get round to changing them..

EmmaGrundyForPM · 31/07/2020 12:27

I have a colleague called Claire, I also.have a sister called Clare. I do try very hard to remember that my colleagues name has an 'I' in it but I dont always remember and when I look at the screen it doesn't stand out as wrong to me if it doesn't have an I.

Maybe it's the same for your colleague?

gumball37 · 31/07/2020 12:28

I just ignore it. Even though it's frustrating. Normally I'd say be a bitch but for some reason I don't do that in situations like this. I have a name like "MaryBeth" and when someone asks for my FIRST name I tell them "MaryBeth" . Inevitably, they split it into "Mary Beth". Like... I even often say "one word" as I spell it because I KNOW they will split it... Doesn't matter.

Hell... One time I opened a new bank account and explained the situation to the teller. She literally turned the screen for me to check it before submitting it.... My debit card came.... Fucking "Mary Beth". 😡

Lindy2 · 31/07/2020 12:28

My name can be spelt 3 different ways. Even people I know well quite often put an incorrect version.

It mildly irritates me but to be honest, it's going to continue, even if I pointed it out to them. I think they honestly forget which spelling is mine. I really can't be bothered to get worked up about it. It's not worth it and I'm sure no genuine offense is meant.

SummerPoppies · 31/07/2020 12:39

No @OdaMaeBrown
I never bother correcting the spelling of it.
If people pronounce it wrong the first time they say it, I will correct them. If they continue to mispronounce it then I let it go.
Life's too short.

HappyDinosaur · 31/07/2020 12:44

This happens to me a fair bit and doesn't bother me at all, it's not rude it's just a small mistake that makes no difference to me at all. I don't understand how people get so wound up about it.
