How many days of holiday, leave, sick days do you get?

How many days do you get, and do you feel it is enough to restore you?

What do you think is a generous amount, and what is measly?

I know MN is mainly UK but interested in responses from all countries. I'm looking for jobs in the US, and my god it is so complicated! All companies have different mixes of vacation days, personal days, holidays (pretty much think this is like bank hols, and if the office is closed for Christmas etc) and then rather confusingly - a set amount of sick days.

UK charity sector 30 days holiday plus 8 bank holidays. Can take flexi of up to 1 day when I've accrued 7 hours and do this most months.

Sick pay is 6 months full pay 6 months half pay. Would trigger absence review if more than 15 days and/or 5 occasions of short term sick leave in a rolling 12 month period. However long term sickness absence of 3 weeks or more continuously is dealt with separately and is case by case. A/L and sick pay are generous but I have worked there for 5 years so have increased entitlements year on year

I get twenty five days holiday, another five days can be used on top of that for if a dependent is ill and we can have a maximum of eight weeks a year off sick which is full pay. We can also carry over a maximum of seven days which has to be taken by April.

Twenty five days is a lot, the last two years I've ended up carrying days over

Also have 8-9 days national holidays too

German Company in the UK.
28 days holiday & option to buy or sell 3 days. Selling only as pension contribution.
8 bank holidays
Flexitime (discretionary upto 1 day per month) although I tend to use it for bits and bobs of school events etc these days
Sick pay when sick. I can't remember exactly i think it's her conversation if more than 4 bouts in a rolling 12 months but might be on the 4th.
6 months full pay then onto insurance plan which is 75%
It always feels like enough although kids have to go to holiday club - apart from the year they had chicken pox 2 weeks apart right at the end of the calendar year, but fortunately I could work from home.

UK public sector.
Holiday: not sure in days, works out around 6 weeks.
Sick: unlimited within reason, full pay for 3 months, half for 6

I’m the same as mayfliesx and get unlimited annual leave. We’re a fairly small company and haven’t had any problems with with people taking excessive amounts (and we still have people who don’t take enough). It’s great for me as my role is naturally really quiet over Christmas so can take two full weeks off without worrying about saving days during the year. We also have very flexible working, almost everyone works from home a day or two a week and there’s no need to give excuses or reasons for why. I really appreciate It as a parent and it means I don’t feel singled out, the young, single people in the office often work from home too, whether it’s for a delivery, because they have an appointment or just because they want to. It’s a great work-life balance

30 days holiday, 8 Bank Holidays and 6 months full sick pay then income protection insurance for as long as I might need it (paid for by my employer). Plus life assurance, private medical inc dental and optical, and loads more.

Am never leaving.

US - 25 days vacation, 9 days flexible time off (basically leave for illness, emergencies), plus public holidays.

That's after 10 years of service at the company. Starting point for new starters is 20 days plus the same flex time and public holidays. The company is generally considered competitive when it comes to salary, benefits, leave allowances and also offers 6 months maternity leave (12 weeks is more the standard in the US).

If you're looking to go to the US on a visa then I recommend the BritishExpats forum for advice on immigration. they're making it ever more difficult to move to the US.

32 days' leave, birthday off, bank holidays, one free day around Christmas. 2 weeks paid leave for loyalty after 10 years. Sick pay is discretionary i think. I've had a few weeks off with mental health problems and i've been paid. Not sure how it would work of it was long term sick though. Maternity pay not great, was bare minimum when I had all mine but improved just after i was off with u youngest (much to my irritation;)

I am in Canada working for a Canadian company. I get -

-10 vacation days per year
-no paid sick days
-9 Paid statutory holidays (Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, family day, Victoria Day, Canada day, Good Friday, Labour day, thanksgiving)

I’ve worked for 3 other companies since I’ve been here (1 Canadian and 2 American) and all have been the same. I will get 15 days after being with the company 5 years.

Oh and maternity is 18 months at 33% pay or 12 months on 55% pay. First 17 weeks are exclusively maternity, after that it’s split parental leave and if you do split, you get additional pay. You have to have been in work for 3 months to receive any of this pay. There is also a child benefit on top of this which isn’t dependent on employment status. All of this is paid by the government (through taxes) though and has nothing to do with the employer specifically. Some employers might offer maternity benefits here but it isn’t Especially common.

34 days holiday.
8 bank holidays.

Can carry over 5.
Can purchase 5.

Sick pay is unlimited paid, but 3 absences in a year will trigger a stage 1. Stage 3 is a disciplinary and stage 4 means that you're out.

Ability to work from home with minor sickness e.g. a cold. This means that the day is counted as normal paid and not sick pay and doesn't count as an absence. Very good perk, and this isn't because of covid. We've had this set-up since 2017!

Doctor's appointments = work your time back.

Medicals / hospital appointments = paid.

Bereavement pay is up to 2 weeks.

My last place gave me the bare minimum of 20 days and we had to use 3 days over Christmas for company shutdown, so I only really had 17 days to play with. Bereavement was unpaid! (they called it compassionate leave but as unpaid).

I’m in Canada. 25 days leave (senior role), 9 bank holidays plus paid sick leave. We also received three extra vacation days this year to take during the summer to avoid burnout.

I'm in the US. I get 20 days of leave, sick leave is bundled in. It's considered generous.

That's pro-rata so if you leave you can be paid out. Also pretty flexible on sick leave although I haven't taken any with my current company and wfh.
