How many days of holiday, leave, sick days do you get?

How many days do you get, and do you feel it is enough to restore you?

What do you think is a generous amount, and what is measly?

I know MN is mainly UK but interested in responses from all countries. I'm looking for jobs in the US, and my god it is so complicated! All companies have different mixes of vacation days, personal days, holidays (pretty much think this is like bank hols, and if the office is closed for Christmas etc) and then rather confusingly - a set amount of sick days.

I work 4 days a week so get 20.5 days leave, plus the BH. Sick, no idea!

LaurieFairyCake · 30/07/2020 17:45

Zero (self employed)

Last year including weekends I took 20 days off Grin

But I do love my job

Sheknowsaboutme · 30/07/2020 17:46

Oh plus one flexi day a month which us another 3 weeks leave for me

Biscoffscoff · 30/07/2020 17:52

I'm amazed at how much leave everyone in here gets, I'm UK public sector which I assumed to be more generous than most but it doesn't seem much from this thread!

I get 27 days annual leave plus the 8 bank holidays. It was 25 days for the first 5 years of employment. If we take time off between Xmas and New year that comes out of that allowance.
Sick pay is max of three months full pay, three months half pay, then SSP. In reality, I've never known anyone be off longer than 6 weeks without just leaving entirely.
We accrue toil and can take one day a month in theory. In reality it's a long hours culture, we all record our hours as we have a computer system that does it, but there's so much work that if I take a days toil I end up working late the days running up to get everything in before my toil. It's common for the system to show hundreds of hours over for any individual at my level (which isn't that high!)

DH has a corporate role and despite a lot of other benefits, leave is poor. He gets 20 days leave plus the bank hols. The office is closed at Xmas and he has to use his allowance for that, so in reality he can only pick 3 weeks / 16 days holiday a year. No toil, expectation is you work late when needed at his level, though his day to day work pressures are lower than mine so he usually finishes on time.

I believe there used to be more generous conditions for sick pay etc in our local govt but everyone was forced onto new contracts a few years ago so even the people who've been here twenty years don't have extra leave or lengthy sickness allowance like they used to.

USA is notoriously bad for leave, sick pay and maternity pay though.

BeBraveAndBeKind · 30/07/2020 17:54

30 days plus all bank holidays.
Sick pay is six months full and six months half.
UK private sector.

mumofamenagerie · 30/07/2020 17:54

30 annual leave days (pro rata as I’m P/T) and 8 bank holidays (not pro rata!). No clue about sickness and maternity. People take time off for both but I haven’t had more than 1-2 instances per year of sickness and have not had children. Colleagues have had multiple pregnancies returning between and after them, so they must be treated reasonably at least!

Vella · 30/07/2020 17:59

@gonshite

I'm in Europe 10 bank holidays 48 days holiday (can buy up to 20 more)

Is that standard? Surely they have to employ cover?

It's fairly standard in my sector (finance) and my husband gets around the same too but is in a different sector (tech). In terms of cover it's not usually a problem (although people don't really buy the extra days), we tend to coordinate. Those with kids split the school holidays and those without take leave out of school holidays. We have to use 20 days between May and December with a minimum of 2 consecutive weeks. Activity slows right down over July and August too.
PaperMonster · 30/07/2020 18:02

I get roughly about ten weeks’ leave including bank holidays and ‘efficiency days’. Sick leave is six months of full followed by six months of half pay. I’m U.K. Years ago I used to work for a company which gave you x amount of sick days per year and people used to use them like holiday days and try to use them up - it was really odd!

MojoJojo71 · 30/07/2020 18:03

NHS with 10+ years service so 33 days annual leave plus 8 bank holidays. Sick pay is 6 months full pay and 6 months half pay.

Sorryusernamealreadyexists · 30/07/2020 18:03

5 weeks holiday plus bank holidays

Mammyloveswine · 30/07/2020 18:08

13 weeks "holiday" although technically not paid for my holidays... sickness policy is 6 months full pay, 6 months half pay... maternity pay was 4 weeks full pay, 2 weeks at 90% pay, 12 weeks at half pay PLUS statutory then the remaining just statutory (approx 600 a month).

Good pension.

Lots of unpaid "overtime".

LynseyLou1982 · 30/07/2020 18:17

40 days. 25 days holiday and 15 days where the un8versity is closed inc bank holidays. No set sick days but generous sick pay.

AbsentmindedWoman · 30/07/2020 18:20

Some of these sound very generous! That's how it should be. In the long term it must really boost enthusiasm and productivity if people are well-rested.

One of the jobs I'm applying for has:

15 days vacation
5 days when the office closes at Christmas
10 other public holidays when the office is closed
10 sick days (seems like they can be used for appointments?)
5 personal days (not sure exactly how they differ from annual leave or sick days?)

That seems very decent to me?

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 30/07/2020 18:20

Company standard is 25 days with option to purchase 5 more. When you've worked there more than 5 years, you get another 5. That's just annual leave so I get 35 days 8 bank holidays.im in uk.

disorganisedsecretsquirrel · 30/07/2020 18:21

Civil service. 31 days annual leave 11 days privilege leave (bh, queen's birthday etc)
Maid months full sick pay then 6 months half pay..

Unjudgemental · 30/07/2020 18:21

UK - 22.5 days part time (28 hours over 4 days) plus bank holidays).

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 30/07/2020 18:21

34 days AL, all bank holidays,6m full pay sick pay followed by 6 months 70% pay. 6 hospital appointments, and a health care plan, plus excellent pension and other benefits.

AbsentmindedWoman · 30/07/2020 18:23

Oh, and they give you 3 days off in your birthday week!

OP posts:
NewKittyMeow · 30/07/2020 18:24

30 days holiday, the usual English bank holidays, 13 weeks sick leave per year.

24hoursfromtulsa · 30/07/2020 18:24

I work for a charity. We get 30 days annual leave, plus bank holidays. Not 100% sure about paid sick leave, I think it's 3 months on full pay.

Previous corporate job gave me 32 1/2 days annual leave (plus BHs) and six moths fully paid sick leave per year.

KingOfDogShite · 30/07/2020 18:25

27 days Annual Leave Not including Christmas close down 5 days.
All 8 Bank Holidays
12 Flexi Days
6 mths full pay sick pay followed by 6 months half pay.

MaskingForIt · 30/07/2020 18:26

U.K. Civil Service
30 days annual leave
8 days public holiday (standard for England)
Paid sick leave up to (I think) 6 months.
Six months full pay for maternity leave, then 3 months at SMP, then 3 months unpaid if you choose.

Almost makes up for not having had a pay rise for the last 10 years!

Alez · 30/07/2020 18:26

In UK, currently have 28 days annual leave but it goes up 1 day each year until it hits 30. Get all 8 public holidays. There's no set number of sick days but you have to talk to your manager I'd you have more than 6. I think I get paid 3 months full pay and 3 months half pay for sick leave.

YouStupidBoy · 30/07/2020 18:28

23 days plus bank holidays. An extra day is gifted if you don't have any days off sick in the preceding year.

FinallyHere · 30/07/2020 18:30
