To ask about being an Avon rep

Nicedinner567 · 28/07/2020 22:23

Popped this on chat as well then realised I’d prob get more responses here.

  • I’m considering online only ie NOT catalogue version selling to people I know.
  • Any catches with Avon? Eg once you want to leave the company, is it easy enough? Thanks! Hopefully hear from some folks who have been online reps/ have worked for Avon.

Don’t do it! It’s probably the best of the MLM schemes but an MLM all the same. You’ll work your socks off for little or no reward. Most of your money will go to people you don’t know further up the pyramid. Think about getting a second PAYE job, much less hassle.

Nicedinner567 · 29/07/2020 08:38

Thanks guys... I won’t... I didn’t realise it was an MLM and what that involved.
I just need to think of a PAYE job for part of the week... if anyone can help with that?!🤞
I’ll start having a search....

@Nicedinner567 if you check the Money Matters board there are some long running threads about earning £10 a day each month. Maybe not as much as a second job but might help while you are looking.

Nicedinner567 · 29/07/2020 08:49

JasperRising... thank you!

Is increasing your current hours an option? I did Avon almost 30 years ago when I was still at school so the contract was in my mum’s name. I ended up paying to work for them as back then you had to pay for the catalogues IIRC.

What I found was most people had their favourite product that was unique to Avon; there was a hand cream that people raved about and the bubble baths were quite often on offer, but they never ordered anything extra. I quite often never got my catalogues back either.

Looking back, I’m surprised my parents allowed it, as I mentioned on another thread they were a bit funny about jobs I could do.

IncredibleSulk · 29/07/2020 09:04

It’s just another MLM which involves a lot of time and effort from you for every little commission. Also, Avon products are rubbish. I’ve never bought something from there twice.

FruitLoopyLoo · 29/07/2020 09:14

Please don't. It's an MLM as I'd body shop at home. You won't make much money if any. It's often less than 1% of distributors that make the big bucks.

FruitLoopyLoo · 29/07/2020 09:14

As is**

gospelsinger · 29/07/2020 09:24

I used to do the catalogues. I enjoyed it. It was good walk around neighbourhood with a pushchair and met some friendly people who I would otherwise not have met, stocked up my own make up collection. Made very little money.

YouokHun · 29/07/2020 09:26

Body Shop at Home and Avon are owned by the same company (Natura) and are being heavily promoted by the crooked Direct Selling Association as a nice bit of cosy selling among friends which is bollocks. The ONLY way to make any real money is to build large teams beneath you and profit off their purchases (and ruin lives - you need to be ok with that as you go up the pyramid). Selling product is a losing game. Glad you’ve thought again op!

A lot of people don’t realise Avon is on the MLM Shit List. I’m glad you’re not going there OP. Smile

Have you had a look at some of the freelancing sites like People Per Hour? There are others too. Good luck!

Scarlettpixie · 29/07/2020 09:48

I did Avon catalogues for a while. At no stage did I try or was I pushed to try and recruit others although it was an option. I got most of my customers through work although I had a free regulars from doorstepping. If you get a few who like the skincare range you get a bit of commission from them. Those who buy 1bottle of bubble bath and you have to make 2 or 3 trips to get it to them, not so much.

I didn’t make anything really but I did get cheap/free products. I wasn’t very committed though so I am sure there is scope to make a bit more. It is more pocket money than wages though.

Nicedinner567 · 29/07/2020 10:46

It’s not an option to increase my hours so I’ll have to look at other things. Will have a look at People Per Hour- thank you! If anyone knows of anything else like this, please pop it on here. Really appreciate this👍

I've done Avon (on a very small scale) for the last 6 years. I started it as a way to get out and meet people, and figured as long as it paid for my kid's school shoes every so often, I was happy!
I've never been put under any pressure to recruit, in fact I have been completely left alone to get on with it (which suits me fine.) I've never tried to sell to friends, or put cringe-worthy posts on Facebook. I think brochures are the way to go, personally - I tend to sell to older people who are more familiar with the brand, and they don't tend to have internet. Just my opinion.

Countarthursgroupie · 29/07/2020 12:13

Don't do it OP. All the negative comments so far, plus they now test on animals so that they can sell in China.

Elieza · 29/07/2020 16:48

There seems to be a lack of childcare providers just now, would that be an option?

big4mlm · 04/08/2020 12:50

@borisjohnsonsstylist just saw your post now

I've bought from them for years and I thought I would enjoy it. And I am! I'm not in it for the money (although it helps) and I've just contacted my friends and family to let them know. I've done a daily post for those who wanted to hear about any deals etc.

Its been 2 weeks since I started and I've made £100. I spent £49 on the start up kit (which I haven't used yet).

YouokHun · 04/08/2020 13:53

@big4mlm it sounds as if you’ve signed up to be a customer who gets discounts? In terms of it being “a business”, come back to us in 6 months time having done watertight book keeping. I’m not wanting to piss all over your bonfire but beware the early success as friends and family support you and you are not yet aware of the total saturation of BSatH (everyone else is signing up believing mistakenly that it offers a lifeline during Covid). If you want to make regular small amounts then you will have to extend your reach far beyond family and friends and that is when you will discover the totally saturated market. You might then try to recruit people as this is the way the MLM model wants to push you as it relies on replenishment of new purchasing customers coming in (like you) and spending money and then tapping into their social networks and so on. Recruiting a large downline is the only way to make money in MLM and those that “appear” to have done well will have done it through recruitment, though even this is very often unsustainable. So it’s a good thing you’re not in it for the money.

Have you looked to see how many other people are “just doing daily posts” about Body Shop at Home? Quite a few to say the least. Be aware that you will have to up the visibility, spread and regularity of your posts and this may start to piss everyone off who has to deal with it.

You haven’t got £100 profit because you need to remove the cost of the £49 starter kit, any products you buy to use as samples, any self purchases you’ve made for your personal use, your time, costs such as petrol.

You should have a look at mlmtruth.org and it would be interesting to hear how it turned out in 6 months time which is when those watching MLM calculate the Covid MLM recruits will start asking for our help.

big4mlm · 04/08/2020 13:58

@YouokHun you sound v passionate. I was just answering questions posted by @borisjohnsonsstylist !

I'm not deluded by any means but these posts about it 'ruining lives' is a bit far fetched.

big4mlm · 04/08/2020 14:00

And I will have probably got bored by 3 months time let alone 6! Grin

YouokHun · 04/08/2020 14:09

@big4mlm I know you were just answering a question from @borisjohnsonsstylist and you’re right I am passionate about MLM because I’ve seen it ruin lives, helped people bullied by the companies and distributors, seen marriage break ups, serious debt. I am part of an anti MLM group and we are contacted daily by people who have been damaged by MLM and Body Shop features regularly. There’s a whole load of behaviour from these companies that I won’t disclose here but I can categorically say that it is not far fetched to talk about ruined lives.

YouokHun · 04/08/2020 14:12

@big4mlm a low boredom threshold may be the thing that saves you! The people who quit early aren’t the biggest victims; they just lose money or if they are lucky, break even and escape without pressure from the ‘team’ or being cut off from any relationships they’ve formed within their MLM.

Norma27 · 04/08/2020 14:19

@big4mlm I wonder how many of your friends and family are already annoyed by your daily posts.
Youokhun speaks the absolute truth in posts above. MLM are a despicable, predatory, unethical business model and many lives are ruined because of these pyramid schemes.

So you’ve made £25 a week? That’s not great for your first fortnight when presumably people who love you are supporting your first order. I hope you do get bored soon, for your own sake.
