The opposite if anything Hmm I am classed as a 'key-worker'. I don't mention it unless it is part of a conversation - I have never been particularly proud of my job but I wasn't ashamed of it because it paid Bill's and was pretty much the only job that worked around my partners hours (essential for childcare). But since the 'key-worker' thing came about the comments other people have made about my job being worthless, low skilled, unnecessary etc. Has made me feel desperately embarrassed and ashamed of what I do. I am not planning on staying in my job forever but for now it is a job. I don't think anyone should be looked on for their job.

GinDaddyRedux · 28/07/2020 12:37

I don't compare myself to anyone - I am fine with my career choice.

YABU.

itwilldropoff · 28/07/2020 12:38

My 7yo made me feel like that when he asked why I didn’t have an important job so that he could go to schoolGrin

Ballerinashoes · 28/07/2020 12:38

No, EVERYONE is a key worker and I’m classed as a “key worker” and so is my husband! Some people just take this status to their heads.

motherrunner · 28/07/2020 12:38

Same as @CarrotCakeCrumbs.

I am a teacher, the last few months I have felt worthless and despised. I have taught for 20 years and have never felt so low.

Lardlizard · 28/07/2020 12:40

Carrot i’m so curious as to what you do now !

Lardlizard · 28/07/2020 12:43

I’ve been a teacher to my kids for the last 6 months so I’m kind of a key worker in that sense 🤣🤣

Do people actually think they are some sort of hero’s though? not at all- the list was a joke, people’s abuse of queue jumping and discounts has been a joke.

SantaClaritaDiet · 28/07/2020 12:46

My hairdresser is not a key-worker but has worked miracle on many women self worth and mental health. I definitively do not think for a second their job is worthless.

There are hundred of examples like that...whilst SOME key workers are actually doing not much.

But I don't define people by their job either.

Nomorezoom · 28/07/2020 12:47

No, I go to work so I can live my life and have fun outside of it. I chose my career based on potential earnings and work life balance.

Lardlizard · 28/07/2020 12:47

This made me laugh !

Of your not a key worker, has it made you feel like your job is a bit worthless ?

No. I work in the arts and culture. We are not important for basic survival. That doesn’t mean I don’t think we are essential in a civilised society. Just that food, healthcare, housing, utilities and a working banking system are all more “key”.

PleasePassTheCoffeeThanks · 28/07/2020 12:50

Not at all - if anything I feel the distinction is :

keyworkers who had to go out to do their jobs -> the ones we should be grateful to, they took risks, we can't function without them.
vs
everybody who was able to WFH (the keyworker status doesn't really matter then)
vs
furloughed -> the ones who might wonder if their "job is a bit worthless" as society has been able to function without them doing it.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 28/07/2020 12:52

Nope. I am technically one because I work for an energy company despite being nothing to do with keeping the lights on.

Lardlizard · 28/07/2020 12:52

And this !

Of your not a key worker, has it made you feel like your job is a bit worthless ?

I am a key worker (teacher) as are my parents. Dad is a HGV driver for a company who deliver food to supermarkets and my mum is a senior carer in a nursing home. None of us think we are 'heros' and we certainly don't think our jobs are any more important than anybody else's.

Nobody's job is pointless. They all contribute to society through tax/NI and even if a person doesn't earn enough to pay tax/NI their income still gets spent on things which helps the economy.

trixiebelden77 · 28/07/2020 12:53

I’m an icu dr. Have never once heard anyone I work with use this phrase to describe themselves.

Don’t judge your own work or it’s value by other people’s egotistical nonsense.

CarrotCakeCrumbs · 28/07/2020 12:54

@Lardlizard I work in a takeaway, it's really not that important and I'm not helping anybody, I have worked throughout the lockdown, and I have dealt with slightly more abuse than I normally would but I absolutely do not think I should be classed as a key-worker, and yet if I chose to - I had a letter stating that because I was a key-worker i could sent my daughter to nursery if i chose to do so (I didn't and wouldn't dream of it!!!). I am looking at working towards becoming a history teacher but for now this is my job.

Lardlizard · 28/07/2020 12:58

Carrot cake good luck to you Flowers

I’m a stay at home
Parent with school aged children, who I’ve been teaching for 6 months, Prior to covid I was doing voluntary charity work
So some would judge me
But I’m just happy being able to do what I want when i want, I love the freedom

CynsterBitch · 28/07/2020 12:58

Absolutely not, immensely grateful not to be a key worker actually. What I will say though, is that the ease with which our office transitioned into WFH has made has made it clear that not providing this as an option is purely for control purposes.
And I will definitely be looking for an employer who allows WFH if my current one ends up insisting we all go back.

Userzzz · 28/07/2020 12:58

No. A lot of other jobs are just as important but they like to pretend the world could keep moving while "key workers" went to work. Thats not how an economy works, thats how an economy dies. The Whole key workers status is a joke, most of the hospital workers, for example, never worked LESS in their lives because the majority of the hospitals were near empty!

Lardlizard · 28/07/2020 12:59

Trixie what are yours and your colleagues thought on the clap for the nhs ? I’m guessing most of the nurses and assistants would prefer a pay rise or at the v min a good bonus for working through this

OP posts:
Mydogisthebestest · 28/07/2020 13:00

I’m not a key worker and I’ve worked all the way through. I feel invisible.

Lardlizard · 28/07/2020 13:01

CynsterBitch Well that’s good really has it has made you change the way you see your working life
