To think I am not overweight?

According to BMI, I am overweight with a reading over 27. I am 5'3 and weigh almost 11 stone. I haven't weighed myself in years so I am a little shocked.

I could do with losing a bit around my tummy, but I am a size 10 so I can't be that bad surely? I do have quite a big chest but that can't be the only reason for my weight.

The NHS uses BMI calculators so I am slightly concerned about it as it must be a trusted way of measuring things. Is it possible to have a high BMI but not be overweight?

Yes you are overweight

bibbitybobbitycats · 26/07/2020 09:49

@Isthisfinallyit

I live abroad. When I shop in the UK I need to suddenly buy clothes 2 sizes down from what I'm used to. The vanity sizing in your country is ridiculous, as is claiming to be slim or normal because you fit a certain size. It's just a scribbled number on a piece of cloth and has nothing to do with your weight.
It's not just the UK. I bought a coat from a French shop online (Sezane) and it was too big at a size 38 (10), I had to buy the 36 (8) instead. Someone else on here ordered from the same place and has the same experience.
formerbabe · 26/07/2020 09:49

It might be the end of her life is she gets Covid

Ok dear

WaffleCash · 26/07/2020 09:50

I can believe you can still be a modern size 10 with those measurements. I was a 10 at 11stone. I'm an 8/10 at 2 stone lighter. I was overweight at 11 stone but I seem to put on weight on my chest and then fairly evenly all over so things like waist measurements don't change as much as you would expect.

TheOrigBrave · 26/07/2020 09:50

It is very unlikely you fall into the small outlier group from whom BMI is inaccurate, so yes you are overweight.

Next sizes are ridiculous.

11 stone at your height is quite a lot

formerbabe · 26/07/2020 09:51

@Goatinthegarden. No worries!

theotherfossilsister · 26/07/2020 09:52

I'm five four and eleven stone and I look a bit chubby. I think living in the UK can give you a false impression though. It's when I travel to Europe that I really notice. I'm size twelve, but occasionally take fourteen too, occasionally take ten as well but pretty sure that is vanity sizing in my case.

I'd like to lose a stone, personally, however your weight isn't awful and if you're comfortable then I don't think it's a huge Covid risk, because you are still not obese, which is where there is the greatest risk.

How do you feel in yourself? I think at the low high end of the BMI it matters less unless you have a health condition. I have RA so badly need to take off this extra stone.

TaserLight · 26/07/2020 09:53

I’m 11 stone and 5 feet 6. My BMI is 24.5, so not quite overweight but getting there. I’m in a diet and exercise plan, I want to lose about a stone to get me down to a BMI of 22.5. If I lose a stone, my huge boobs will drop to a sensible size, my muffin top will go and I’ll shift the upper arm fat and small double chin I have. Even though my BMI is 24.5, so I’m not quite overweight, I do look a bit chubby at this weight. I think what people think looks fat now is distorted because 65% of the population are overweight or obese.

JinglingHellsBells · 26/07/2020 09:53

@GinDaddyRedux @formerbabe
How can people get the wrong end of the stick? My comment about @Fressia123 was actually a compliment. She's got a great pair of boobs and all I was saying was that I'm surprised she can fit into an 8 across the bust, given her boobs are fairly big. That's not being rude! A size 8 is usually classed as a 30 inch chest. I'm a 30D bra and usually have to get a 10 so it's not really tight. And I'm hardly 'struggling' with a BMI of 19.

That's all.

Not rude.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 26/07/2020 09:54

I’m 5’7”, 10st and a comfortable size 12.

I need to drop a min of half a stone to be a 10. I was 11st after my youngest was born and was a size 14. I’m amazed that someone 4inches shorter than me would be 2 sizes smaller at the same weight.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 26/07/2020 09:54

I'm 5.8 and 11 stone is the higher end of a healthy weight for me.

Patchworksack · 26/07/2020 09:54

I'm 5'3 and currently 9st5, but happier at 9st. What is your waist measurement? It is a better indicator of metabolic health and should be less than half your height - so

Onekidnoclue · 26/07/2020 09:54

I’m 5’4 and weigh 9st. I’m a size ten. Can squeeze into an 8 in some shops (love you hush!). If I packed on a stone or two (even if it was entirely boob) I’m not sure I could fit into my clothes and I would feel as if it needed to lose weight.
Some people are naturally more muscular which might explain it along with the boobs (I’m only. 32D) but it does seem a big disparity. Perhaps a tape measure could help? Take measurements and see how they compare to ‘proper’ sizes, rather than the erratic high street.

dadshere · 26/07/2020 09:55

It sounds overweight, but that doesn't mean it is. Are you fairly muscular? Take a piece of string of your own height, fold it in half and wrap it round your waist. If the ends touch, you are fine, if not, consider a diet. I did this and it motivated me to lose 4lbs which I have mostly kept off.

magicmallow · 26/07/2020 09:55

I'm the same weight and height as you OP. I'm a 14-16, not a 10! Where are you shopping for your clothes?! I am currently losing weight, I definitely need to lose some.

theotherfossilsister · 26/07/2020 09:55

@onlynameicouldthinkof how is team RH? I like the non faddiness of it, but am yet to try it.

Iloveyoutothefridgeandback · 26/07/2020 09:55

You probably are overweight, based on what you have said here, although none of us can say for sure over the internet.

If you are really bothered you could get a PT session and they can properly measure your body fat percentage.

I agree with the PP who said living in the UK can give you a slightly warped perspective. It's so normal to be obese that being overweight looks normal/healthy to a lot of people.

Badabingbadabum · 26/07/2020 09:55

I'm 5'6 and (thanks to water retention) am between 11.5 - 12 stone. I wear size 12 and I am overweight according to bmi guidelines. The last time I weighed around 12 st I was heavily pregnant so yes, I am overweight. Medication and a lack of exercise over the last few months has meant weight has gone on easily and I havent used any extra calories.

Lots of shops have used vanity sizing on their clothes sizes. If I was to hunt out a pair of size 12 trousers from ten years ago I don't think I'd fit in them anymore.

JinglingHellsBells · 26/07/2020 09:56

@formerbabe You seem to be in denial about weight and the risks of Covid. Don't 'dear' me in that patronising way, when I point out facts.

newphoneswhodis · 26/07/2020 09:56

There is no way on gods green earth that someone with 30GG boobs fits a size 10 top or dress. I'm 32GG and am a 16 in most. Two inches on your back is not 3dress sizes smaller. I just don't buy it.

I weigh the same as you, same height. I'm 14 in bottoms (maybe a 12 if they are stretchy) and 16 in tops and dresses.

SoleBizzz · 26/07/2020 09:58

Short and dumpy British 🤣

AcrobaticCardigan · 26/07/2020 10:01

Have you got chunky legs? I am a good 6 inches taller than you & carry my weight around my middle but at 11st I’d be a 12-14. I find it hard to believe you are slim all over at that weight to be honest!

PeanutButterKid · 26/07/2020 10:01

I'm same bust as OP (38ish). I can fit my bust in size 10 tops. It's my shoulders that don't fit in most size 10 tops. It's OP's 11 stone total that seems odd. Thunder thighs or what?

bibbitybobbitycats · 26/07/2020 10:05

Not true, I don't think. I am 34F and easily fit into some size 10/S tops unless they are very fitted and clingy, in which case it is a 12/M, never any bigger than that. It really does depend on the shop and the cut of the clothes and a person's frame.
FenellaVelour · 26/07/2020 10:05

I’m around the same height, and at 11st I would’ve been the same size as you.

I was 10st from the age of 16 and at that age I was wearing what would now be considered a size 8 (It was a 10 then, but that was over 25 years ago).

I can’t remember the last time I was 9st. If I weighed 9st I’d look ill.
