To think I am not overweight?

orangegerbil · 26/07/2020 07:51

According to BMI, I am overweight with a reading over 27. I am 5'3 and weigh almost 11 stone. I haven't weighed myself in years so I am a little shocked.

I could do with losing a bit around my tummy, but I am a size 10 so I can't be that bad surely? I do have quite a big chest but that can't be the only reason for my weight.

The NHS uses BMI calculators so I am slightly concerned about it as it must be a trusted way of measuring things. Is it possible to have a high BMI but not be overweight?

I'm 5ft 1.5 and feel massive at 9 stone

I wear River Island size 8 jeans but I am not slim nor skinny

DotForShort · 26/07/2020 18:33

I'm the same height as the OP and weigh about 2 stone less. I do have a small chest so that might be part of it, but I'm certainly not super skinny at my current weight. I would definitely be overweight at 11 stone. Vanity sizing has a lot to answer for IMO.

RunningFromInsanity · 26/07/2020 18:38

I can’t see how you are a true size 10.
I’m 5ft8 and 10stone so 5 inches taller and 1 stone lighter and I’m a 10-12.

SuperFairy · 26/07/2020 18:45

I can’t believe that I’m 4 inches taller, the same weight and yet I’m a size 14!
It just shows what a difference body shape can make.

orangegerbil · 26/07/2020 18:51

I don't know why people keep saying they don't understand how I can be a size 10 - I wear size 10 in every shop, sometimes even a size 8. I fit in size Small in Gap. I have no reason to lie about this on an anonymous forum.

Because they are knobs

Justanotherwrinkle · 26/07/2020 18:57

@Malbecblooms I’m also 5ft6 and I weigh 9stone and am a size 12 and don’t always find that comfortable. Carry on my waist which is a 30 for jeans.

Shows how body shape and composition can very so wildly.

whereorwhere · 26/07/2020 18:58

Sorry but you are very overweight. I am the same height as you and wear size 8-10 no idea how you fit in a ten. I don't mean to be rude

whereorwhere · 26/07/2020 18:59

Should have said I weigh 8st. I have been 9.5 stone and was definitely a size 12

formerbabe · 26/07/2020 19:01

@orangegerbil

Honestly, there are so many women who basically hate the fact that some women don't place their entire self worth on what number the scales show....

Lucindainthesky · 26/07/2020 19:02

I'm 5' 3, 10.7 stone and definitely overweight (BMI 26)

My belly is enormous, I have love handles, back fat, fat upper arms etc.

Most of my clothes are a size 10.

Lurkingforawhile · 26/07/2020 19:06

Have you tried doing other measurements like height / waist ratio? I heard a health expert the other day say it was a better measurement. I'm 5,2 and 130lb. BMI is 24 but I know I feel not in good shape and my waist is bigger than it should be.

Lucindainthesky · 26/07/2020 19:06

And actually thinking about it, last winter I went up to 11 stone and still fit into a size 10 so I for one believe the OP!

MrsBobDylan · 26/07/2020 19:07

Honestly op, none of us can tell you if you are overweight. You may have a tiny frame but carry too much weight, it could be the boobs, who knows?

tilder · 26/07/2020 19:14

BMI Range is fairly bollocks for many people

People only say this when they don't like the answer. We are fairly desensitized to people being overweight. It has become normal.

anon444877 · 26/07/2020 19:21

My bmi is 27, I’m trying to get it back in the normal range. It’s the measure used by the nhs, whatever limits it has there isn’t a better measure. Being outside the normal BMI range is a risk for covid. Your clothes size doesn’t matter.

Lovewithalampost · 26/07/2020 19:22

I’m 5 5 and at 11 stone was completely overweight and flabby. Maybe you just don’t carry it on your stomach but it’s there. I’ve lost a stone and have another 10lbs to go before being back at what I would consider a healthy weight. So at 5 3 yes you are overweight but a stone of weight loss will put you back in normal range.

strivingtosucceed · 26/07/2020 19:27

People in this thread are so judgemental, you could just have heavy bones or an extra-ordinarily big head LOL.

I'm 5"2, 73kg and apparently obese according to my BMI. I also have 32H/34GG boobs and wearing 10-12 depending on the cut/fit. BMI doesn't seem to work if you're shorter than average or have big boos/lean muscle.

JaggySplinter · 26/07/2020 19:34

Some people are much heavier that you expect by looking at them. I'm 5"6 and size 8/10 but also weigh about 70kg. Most people assume I weigh about 10kg less than that. I guess I'm just dense. I am very muscly and have 30FF/G boobs which add a few kg.

JaggySplinter · 26/07/2020 19:34

But OP, I expect you are a bit "overweight" but not necessarily unhealthy because of it.

Crystal87 · 26/07/2020 19:35

No you're not overweight. I'm size 10 at 11 stone. Some people carry more muscle and it depends on your body type.

JinglingHellsBells · 26/07/2020 19:35

BMI doesn't seem to work if you're shorter than average or have big boos/lean muscle.

Of course it does. 5 2" is hardly that short.

Most women find their boobs get bigger when they put on weight all over, and shrink when they lose weight. Boobs are mainly made of fat.

If you want to see real muscle, look online at photos of Jessica Ennis Hill. She is 5 4" and weighs 8st 9.

Not many women are that athletic!

tilder · 26/07/2020 19:35

People in this thread are so judgemental

The op asked for opinions. She wanted to know if her height and weight meant she was overweight. It's not judgmental to give an answer.

Eatyourbanana · 26/07/2020 19:36

Well this thread has been a depressing read. Did you know that 11 stone is the average weight for women in the UK OP?

You might not believe it from this thread...

JinglingHellsBells · 26/07/2020 19:36

No you're not overweight. I'm size 10 at 11 stone. Some people carry more muscle and it depends on your body type.

Unless you are an Olympic athlete, you will not be 'carrying more muscle.'

I'm a size 10 and weigh 7st 7.
