To think I am not overweight?

According to BMI, I am overweight with a reading over 27. I am 5'3 and weigh almost 11 stone. I haven't weighed myself in years so I am a little shocked.

I could do with losing a bit around my tummy, but I am a size 10 so I can't be that bad surely? I do have quite a big chest but that can't be the only reason for my weight.

The NHS uses BMI calculators so I am slightly concerned about it as it must be a trusted way of measuring things. Is it possible to have a high BMI but not be overweight?

lilgreen · 26/07/2020 11:27

@banana she said 5ft 11!!!

NameChange84 · 26/07/2020 11:29

15 stone at 5ft 3!! I’m not surprised they got some more scales!! That’s really heavy for a woman and someone who is short.

Eh? She said she was 5”11? Where’d you get 5”3 from?

^Someone further up said they are 5ft 11 and 11st 6 and a size 12/14
I'm the same height and at 15 stone I'm a size 14/16. ^

TheFairyCaravan · 26/07/2020 11:29

I'm 5ft4 8st 2 with 30FF boobs. I wear a 6-8 in Next and M&S, including tops. When I was younger I was always under 8st and had smaller boobs however I could never fit in a size 8 sometimes a 10 was tight. Clothes sizes are bonkers nowadays.

If I put on 3 stone I'd look, and feel, dreadful. Sorry.

ThatsHowWeRowl · 26/07/2020 11:30

I'm 5ft 3 and 11 stone and definitely overweight! I'm not huge, but I'm a solid size 14 at the moment and in the last few months have started to 'feel' my weight which I have never had before, so I am not happy and need to start shifting some. However, when I tell other people how much I weigh they are often surprised that I weigh that much so maybe I don't look as fat as I am, I don't know?

Pre kids I was just over 9 stone and a size 10 - i never thought I looked slim then and couldn't understand how I fitted in a 10 (although now I looked back at photos now and I really was slim and lovely!)

PablosHoney · 26/07/2020 11:30

I think in the rush to tell the poster she was super fat she didn’t stop to read it properly 😂

PeanutButterKid · 26/07/2020 11:31

This lady is 5'2", 117 lbs, prof athlete (wall of muscle, BMXr). OP is almost 30 lbs heavier and only 1" taller. 25% heavier and 2% taller.

PablosHoney · 26/07/2020 11:31

How do you get a size six top over FF boobs!

itssquidstella · 26/07/2020 11:32

I'm 5'11" and weigh 10st6lb-ish: not entirely sure as I haven't weighed myself for a while. I'm pretty toned/athletic (no boobs!) and would look squidgy at 11 stone.

PeanutButterKid · 26/07/2020 11:32

Another 5'2" athelete, thought to weight about 100 lbs.

PinkyBrain · 26/07/2020 11:33

It does sound a bit overweight, sorry to say. I’m two inches taller and just over two stone lighter and in the “healthy” range. Clothes sizes are so messed up now though it’s becoming impossible to order online and easy to see how it leads to this kind of confusion.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 26/07/2020 11:33

Any woman whose BMI is overweight due to her having healthy levels of fat and enough muscles to push her over 25, is working very, very, very hard for that kind of muscle.

Agreed. I remember reading a woman who'd been training with heavy weights for >15 years say something like this - in all that time, she'd gained 5lbs of muscle (separating out appendicular muscle mass from her lean body mass). iirc it was Krista Scott-Dixon.

It's very difficult for most women to gain serious amounts of muscle mass, we don't have the testosterone levels. (Muscle definition is a different matter and we typically can't see it well until the fat on top of it reaches a particular level.)

EmpressSuiko · 26/07/2020 11:34

@PablosHoney might not be true in this case but a lot of woman aren’t having their breasts measured correctly, I think the boob or bust measurement is more accurate? I never been able to fit into a bra as A’s were too big but with their method found I’m a 28E, sounds much larger than it is.

PeanutButterKid · 26/07/2020 11:35

5'3" & 118 lbs.
Not one of these athletes so far has an unhealthy BMI due to being muscular. (source btw)

To think I am not overweight?
motherof2masterofnone · 26/07/2020 11:36

I'm 5'2" 10 stone exactly (after recently having 2 children in 3 years) and I know I feel and look very over weight.

Most of the fat is around my tummy and thighs but I can see it in my face and arms too.

ThatsHowWeRowl · 26/07/2020 11:36

Yes the whole 'muscle weighs more than fat thing' - as PP said, a lot of female athletes who are super muscly but lean still don't weigh anything like me actual overweight people. Jessica Ennis is apparently 5ft5 and 9 stone for example.

Men it's a bit different I think because the muscle density and size really is so much bigger.

PeanutButterKid · 26/07/2020 11:36

5'2" & 130 lbs... 24 lbs below OP.

ThatsHowWeRowl · 26/07/2020 11:37

Oh I cross posted!

Covert20 · 26/07/2020 11:38

Well I’m 5’8 and 11 stone and a bit on the heavy side (albeit with just about a healthy BMI) so in the kindest possible way, YABU

aintnothinbutagstring · 26/07/2020 11:38

Next sizing is big, it always has been. It's possible for a woman to be quite erm 'dense' in weight and not look particularly overweight or obese. For example, I was nearly 14 stone and 5'7 and I was wearing a size 14 generally, a size 16 was hit and miss in terms of being too big. I could still wear Zara larger sizes (which as people have complained are not that large).

Fressia123 · 26/07/2020 11:39

@PeanutButterKid I think you're taking it to the extreme.

I don't anybody has said she's not overweight? And that training gives slighy more leeway.

I train, my BMI is 27. I don't consider myself overweight as such, but I'm aware to be in my prime I need to lose weight. I'm smaller than my weight suggests, that doesn't mean I shouldn't lose a tad more weight.

Oly4 · 26/07/2020 11:40

I’m 5ft 5 and 11st and look overweight to me and my BMI says so.. but I’m also in a size 10 clothes pretty much everywhere.

JinglingHellsBells · 26/07/2020 11:40

When Jessica Ennis Hill was at her competitive best, before she retired after children, she weighed around 8st 9lb and was 5 4". Pure muscle.

PeanutButterKid · 26/07/2020 11:40

MMA champ, 5'3" & 115 lbs.

Covert20 · 26/07/2020 11:40

And I wouldn’t fit a 10 anywhere without losing 20 lbs. I’m a large 12/ small 14.
