To think I am not overweight?

orangegerbil · 26/07/2020 07:51

According to BMI, I am overweight with a reading over 27. I am 5'3 and weigh almost 11 stone. I haven't weighed myself in years so I am a little shocked.

I could do with losing a bit around my tummy, but I am a size 10 so I can't be that bad surely? I do have quite a big chest but that can't be the only reason for my weight.

The NHS uses BMI calculators so I am slightly concerned about it as it must be a trusted way of measuring things. Is it possible to have a high BMI but not be overweight?

Shows that dress sizes are odd. I am 5 foot 2 and would look like a tank if I were 11 stone.

As it is, I'm 7 stone 8 (BMI of around 19-20, I think), and clothes sizing doesn't work at all for me. Dresses don't fit at all because I'm about 30AA in the bust, but bigger round my hips. No bum or thighs - I just have a funny shaped skeleton. So I'd never go by dress size. More by whether I look ok for my height and build.

I can get in size 10 jeans and I have no reason to lie about this Confused

Hip measurement is 36inches, waist 27 inches

*It is a better indicator of metabolic health and should be less than half your height - so 40% body fat at BMI of 22, weight approx 8 stone 10) - my waist was

I can't get in size 10 jeans, Gerbil, though you are more than 3 stone heavier than I am, and a similar height. Or I could, but they would be desperately uncomfortable. I think it's the shop sizing that is weird.
ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 26/07/2020 10:20

Yeah, that's definitely overweight, I'm overweight at 5'4 and 10st.

No you're not. Healthy weight range for your height: 7st 10lb - 10st 6lb. You have a BMI of 24.

So you think every person who is 5'4" is fine as long as they are between those weights, when there is a range of almost 3 stones? There is a range because what is right for one person wouldn't be right for another, so even if the chart shows 10st 6lb might not be overweight for some people, it may well be for this poster if her ideal weight is e.g. 8st 7lb.
If I weighed 10 st I'm sure I would have rolls of fat, so I would not be telling myself I was not overweight because I still had 6lbs to go.

oakleaffy · 26/07/2020 10:23

Eleven stones for a height of 5'3'' seems 'overweight' to me.....I am 5'8'' [1.72metres] and at 11.5 stone definitely overweight.
I want to lose the ''middle'' podge.

Clothes sizes are often ''vanity'' sized, made to be far larger than they 'ought' to be , as they give the wearer a boost.
No way on God's Green Earth could I fit into size 10 trousers! 12 is doable, but uncomfortably tight...14 is a bit baggier but comfortable.

BMI is a terrible measure of individual "fatness", it's a metric designed to look at population not individual level.

I've recently dropped down a little but for a long time I was technically overweight at 5'2 and just under 11stone. Only what the BMI didnt take in to account is that I train 5-6xweek, lift heavy weights and have a bodyfat percentage of around 20%. Plus I have a lot of loose skin from losing 10+stone).

frumpety · 26/07/2020 10:24

I reckon you will have at least 4-5 llbs of boobage at a 30GG.

Fressia123 · 26/07/2020 10:27

@Firef1y72 the OP is borderline so nouch concern.

However as someone who trains I don't think you can completely disregard BMI. Most people don't train so BMI is still a decent indicator that they might have more body fat than they should.

PinkDaffodil2 · 26/07/2020 10:27

Your waist is relatively slim so you’re probably less at risk of heart disease than some people who are the same height / weight as you, but at a BMI of 27 and with fat on your tummy you are a little bit overweight I’m afraid.

Emeraldshamrock · 26/07/2020 10:29

My waist is 27 inches and I wear a 30GG bra size
I'm sorry OP it is very hard to believe your bra measures are 30 on your back at that weight and you wear a size 10 comfortably.
I am not trying to be rude but where do you shop?
I'm a 32D but wear a 34D for comfort the 32 is tight ish if you're the same height and 3.5 stone heavier than me your scales is wrong.

What's your chest measurement OP?

From your measurements you are a 10 bottom, are you very top heavy?
Either that or your scales aren't accurate.

Newdaynewname1 · 26/07/2020 10:29

I’m an inch shorter than you, 10.3 st and very definitely overweight.
Unless you are a professional weightlifter, rugby player etc, its fat, not muscle, sorry. The amount of muscle needed to be in the bmi >25 category is pretty amazing - nothing you would get from less than at least 2 hours intense exercise every day.

JinglingHellsBells · 26/07/2020 10:30

What you are saying @orangegerbil doesn't add up (literally!)

If your waist is 27 and your hips 36, where is the weight?
You might have really solid legs and arms and a bum.

Your measurements, other than your bust, are similar to mine yet I weigh 3.5st less than you.

Clothes sizes are meaningless.

Newdaynewname1 · 26/07/2020 10:31

Oh, forgit to add: i can wear a size 8 in many brands, but that means nothing. Its vanity sizing at its fines.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 26/07/2020 10:31

You can take a look at different body types for the same weight and height in this gallery of photographs:

EmpressSuiko · 26/07/2020 10:32

OP if Male sure your scales are correct as I can’t imagine al your weight is in your chest? Do you have thicker legs/bottom half?

I’m 5ft 6. I weight 8 stone 10 (gained 5lbs in lockdown)
25” waist, 37” hip, 32” bust, 28” underbust.

I’m a size 6-8, occasionally a ten in bottoms if I want a loser fit as I am a pear shape and unfortunately in my family all the woman have thicker thighs.

Frame and bone structure play a role in what sizes we can wear and I’m not trying to cause offence but with your measurements I can’t see how you can be 11stone.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 26/07/2020 10:32

I'm 5'4 and I weigh 11.6 stones. I'm a size 10 as my bust and legs aren't very big (I carry the weight round my middle), but I'm definitely overweight.

dotdashdashdash · 26/07/2020 10:32

Emeraldshamrock do you use the traditional +4 method of bra measurement? I'm a size 14 on top and bra size 28F.

Okay your scales must be off. My boobs are small but my waist is 26, my hips are 36, and I weigh 105lb at 5"1. I wear a size 6 on top and 8 on the bottom from shops like H&M, Zara, Asos etc. Not sure about Next, M&S as I never shop there so assuming their sizing is massive then
Fressia123 · 26/07/2020 10:33

@JinglingHellsBells what's your chest measurement? I'm genuinely curious as our hips and waist are the same size .

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 26/07/2020 10:33

And there's this visualizer where you put in your weight and height and then tinker with the model it gives you of yourself:

Sally872 · 26/07/2020 10:33

Have you tried another set of scales? I don't think you are lying but seems heavy for a 5 ft 3 size 10.

I am 5 ft 2 size 12-14 and weigh 10 stone.

EmpressSuiko · 26/07/2020 10:34

I forgot to add my bmi is 19.5.

Nottherealslimshady · 26/07/2020 10:36

I'm exactly the same. I'm definitely overweight and not a size 10 in trousers but I am in tops. But my weight is on my legs, not my boobs.
