To think in MN land no one should have a dog?

bluesapphirestars · 25/07/2020 08:44

The only acceptable dog is a rescue, with a few exceptions, and rescues won’t rehome to people who WOTH or who have children, so that immediately rules most of mn out.

The only other acceptable alternative is to make the dog more than a pet, it’s a lifestyle, involving intensive breed research and so on. Again, not conducive to homes with children.

So in short - the verdict on MN is no dog.

(Semi light hearted!)

And you assume every dog owner is like your friend?

Not at all. But there are owners who are happy to leave their dogs home all day, every day.

I am sure that sensible dog owners make adequate provision for their dogs during the day. It’s the ones who don’t I object to.

Haenow · 25/07/2020 14:47

YANBU.

Since losing our dog, I’ve been scouring rescues for some time. I’m quite open to various breeds and more than able to handle a ‘challenging’ dog as I’m an experienced dog owner. I work part time and partly from home, I have a garden, not on a main road, brand spanking new 6 foot fences (the old ones didn’t survive a storm) but children. Children are the barrier and I do understand why but it is what it is. I’ll keep looking.

IJustWantSomeBees · 25/07/2020 14:48

@RedRumTheHorse

This is the whole premise of my argument: you (and the vast majority of others on this thread) believe that a person’s desire to derive pleasure from owning a dog is a human right, I do not.

People should wait until the perfect dog comes into rescue because that is in the best interest of dogs. People buying dogs simply because they want to is why there are thousands currently in rescues. That and people’s obsession with demanding that they will only rehome a puppy.

We will not reach an agreement because we have inherently different moral views on animals and whether it is ethical to breed them into existence solely for human enjoyment

SecretSpAD · 25/07/2020 14:48

- I'll get back in my box then! Sorry for assuming. I just see it a lot.

No it's entirely my fault. You can't expect to read my mind!!

@bluesapphirestars

There we are: polite question and a sarky response and Hmm face. Thanks greyt, very helpful.
You question was very obviously passive aggressive with your "would have been helpful" comment. You have actually come across quite rude on this thread.
bluesapphirestars · 25/07/2020 15:00

That’s your opinion greyt. Mine is that someone who genuinely wanted to help rescue dogs would help make it easier for families to find them.

OP posts:
RedRumTheHorse · 25/07/2020 15:14

@Iwalkinmyclothing one of the dogs is a traditional mongrel so I was surprised when they said they brought it. The dog due to the mixtures my neighbour thinks it is, seems to be due to the owner of the parents not neutering them.

Oh and some of the thousands of dogs in rescues are specially brought in from abroad.

I do know people who rescued their dogs directly from abroad. I also know others who have working breeds who were useless at their job so were sold as pets.

Carrotgirl87 · 25/07/2020 15:18

Missing the point but, what is the obsession on Mumsnet with greyhounds Confused

bluesapphirestars · 25/07/2020 15:24

I have no idea carrot. I don’t think they are suitable family pets at all.

OP posts:
Porcupineinwaiting · 25/07/2020 15:33

Dont you @bluesapphirestars. Friends of mine have a rescue greyhound and I'd say in many ways he's ideal.

Carrotgirl87 · 25/07/2020 15:36

Every single dog thread - get a greyhound.

Poodle crosses are puppy farm risks because they're so popular, because of their family friendly temperament. I don't see why the breeds are discounted as a breed choice so much if you get one responsibly.

But no, you can only be a responsible dog owner if you rescue an old greyhound and then quit your job to take care of it. Madness of Mumsnet.

hula008 · 25/07/2020 15:52

Why is the "need" of the family greater than the need of the dog? Young children are the most at risk group for dog bites, why would you put a dog in a situation with young children if you can avoid it? Whilst rescues centres are undeniably busy they rehome pets reasonably quickly with appropriate owners.

As to earlier in the thread when someone asked for examples of when rescue centres re-home dogs with people who work: 👋

KisstheTeapot14 · 25/07/2020 15:58

Can we have a thread called 'I'm an old greyhound ask me anything'?

I do think its bonkers getting a dog you don't have time for. I cringe when I see over bred dogs with squashed faces 'they are so cute'

I'd love a grey hound but DH and I agreed I do not have it in me to rise at 6am on a cold February morn to walk dog before work. We got a cat instead (rescue) and waited a year before we found one that would be happy with us (house cat).

Broke my heart to see all the sad dogs in local rescue. All 'butch' dogs let down by owners and unofficial breeders. Staffies, Ridgebacks etc.

My only helpful advice is that JRT's are a real handful. Very energetic, clever. Don't be fooled by their size and cuteness.

bluesapphirestars · 25/07/2020 16:04

Greyhounds are very large dogs and they weigh a lot. Regardless of how well individuals are trained, they have a strong prey drive.

Most dogs can be wonderful family pets in the hands of the right owners, but families with cats, in small properties, probably aren’t best suited to them.

OP posts:
Carrotgirl87 · 25/07/2020 16:14

With you on the JRT thing. Ten minutes on the puppy survival thread is proof of that.

Vodkacranberryplease · 25/07/2020 16:14

@KisstheTeapot14 My only helpful advice is that JRT's are a real handful. Very energetic, clever. Don't be fooled by their size and cuteness.

I love JRTs! Little beasts! But I got a Westie instead as they are calmer. I take mine to work and a JRT would have potentially been a bit of a handful.

One day! When I'm retired and around lots of people who can walk/play with it. But if you have children you can't go wrong with a golden retriever or lab.

But that's why people often don't want to get a rescue.. they want a dog that has grown up with their children and been well socialised with other dogs.

Many of the 'dog lovers' on here seem remarkably relaxed about keeping a dog that is highly dangerous to other dogs. I could never forgive myself if a dog I owned hurt or killed another dog or someone's cat. There's nothing saintly or animal loving about keeping a dog that 'doesn't get on with' other dogs. Even if you did 'rescue' it. Unless you keep it away from other animals at all times.

longwayoff · 25/07/2020 16:21

Are you ok OP? There's a concentration of dog lovers on MN, it's nearly as good as Crufts in that regard.

vodkaredbullgirl · 25/07/2020 16:21

I have 2 labs and there is always someone home, but then there is 3 adults in the house.

bluesapphirestars · 25/07/2020 16:25

Am I OK? Yes thanks, why? Smile

@bluesapphirestars

Doggy daycare is a thing. I never used it personally but have used dog walkers.

There’s irresponsible and there’s having questions because someone hasn’t done it before.

People who shout at others to rescue clearly haven’t tried to rescue recently. Rescues are full - Of bull breeds, mostly. For the most part (and I accept there are exceptions) cavapoos and spaniels and so on aren’t there.

Rescues have plenty of poodle crosses and spaniels... there are multiple rescues in fact that just take those in.

Teenage poodle crosses are often sold on right enough, when people realise they’re not what they were expecting because even an untrained teenage poodle cross will sell for a fair amount of money. You quite often see their original price quoted in ads, as if they were second hand furniture or something.

Vodkacranberryplease · 25/07/2020 16:56

Spaniels are so sweet - but my god they need a lot of walking/exercise.

Also for rescues apparently a lot of chihuahuas available - specialist rescues again.people buy them not realising they are actual dogs 🙄🙄

Costacoffeeplease · 25/07/2020 17:04

I don’t advocate greyhounds for everyone, but I’ve known quite a few and all great family pets. They may have to be muzzled in public, but at home they tend to be calm, quiet, and sleep a lot. Much better than a little bouncy yappy dog

midnightstar66 · 25/07/2020 17:36

@Carrotgirl87 @Vodkacranberryplease my JRT is the laziest beast. She also hates bad weather so does not even wish to go outside if it's raining. She's the perfect balance of being able to go all day if you're out and about but would also sleep all day as long as your are also doing so.
