To think in MN land no one should have a dog?

The only acceptable dog is a rescue, with a few exceptions, and rescues won’t rehome to people who WOTH or who have children, so that immediately rules most of mn out.

The only other acceptable alternative is to make the dog more than a pet, it’s a lifestyle, involving intensive breed research and so on. Again, not conducive to homes with children.

So in short - the verdict on MN is no dog.

(Semi light hearted!)

tabulah I taught GrumpyBitch to stay using positive reinforcement. Paper plate recall - absolute genius system. Two or three sessions, job 90% done. She then got put back in the hall a few times when she broke a stay while I was preparing her food.

Which basically finished the training side of the job. Since then we've just practiced it and extended it.

@GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman paper plate recall? Sounds intriguing! And effective!

Haven’t tried that one...

I often get a few weeks of, very active? Staying, lol, where they’re hyper alert waiting for the release command. It depends quite a lot on where they are with impulse control.

So giving them something better to do as a short term fix while you work on it isn’t IMO terrible advice.

To be fair, I don’t do any training round dinner time tbh, when we get a foster that’s clearly used to shared meals Hmm I just hardcore ignore them, it takes a couple of weeks max before they stop, lol

Paper plate recall is the most amazing training exercise I've ever found. It teaches stay, send out and recall in one package. Once you have that bit nailed, you can add in directions, stops and redirections.

But yeah, a chew as a short time device is okay, but iirc the advice was offered as just 'give the dog something nicer'.

Mine will do stay and isn't bad around meals as hard core ignore has been my strategy from day one. She usually takes herself out of the room bless her. To avoid temptation Grin
