Been treated disgustingly by this pub

I got offered a part-time job at a pub.
I've done waitressing before but never pulled pints, I told them this and they said it was no problem and they would train me.

Did my training/shift last week. Made a few dodgy pints but picked it up by the end. Did alright with the till, pub was very quiet so just cleaned tables and glasses, didn't seem to be any issues.

I told them I had a holiday booked for later this summer and they seemed very easygoing, saying that they were very flexible and that we could sort it out between us on whatsapp.

The manager was mainly sat there with her friend once she had trained me, she seemed to trust me enough to leave me to it.

Anyway i've since texted twice with my availability and showed that i'm keen, and no reply.

She told me that the rota had been sent out individually to everyone as some of us would be going to different pubs.

Anyway, still haven't received a rota of any kind and i've just been deleted off the whatsapp group. Text the manager to ask why and zero reply.

So I guess this is their way of saying they don't want me. Appalling, i've never been treated that way before. They owe me money for my shift so I will be there tomorrow and will not be nice to them.

I'm fortunate to have a main job and this was intended as a part time summer job, but I really feel for people whose main job that may have been.

Plus, they pay £8.00 per hour, and i'm 29 so it's illegal as min.wage is £8.72.

What would you do ? Very appalling.

It’s not great but I wouldn’t do anything, I’d just look for another job.

EvePolastri938 · 24/07/2020 20:41

Well I don't plan to 'do anything' as such, maybe I phrased it wrong but I want to speak to them to let them know that is not ok.

They also know they owe me wages and haven't been in touch to say I can collect them, probably hoping i'll forget

Sorry to say it sounds as though the training shift didnt go as well as you thought and they aren't planning to give you any more shifts.
It is a really shitty way to go about it though rather than just telling you face to face it hasn't worked out. I would definitely chase up your wages for that shift and if they refuse or try to tell you the shift was an unpaid trial I would contact ACAS and complain about them

FATEdestiny · 24/07/2020 20:43

If you accepted a job knowing it was under minimum wage, did you seriously expect to be treated well?

Just forget, ignore and move on.

GroggyLegs · 24/07/2020 20:43

I think I'd try & see it a a dodged bullet - they would not be a good boss to work for if they can't even be arsed to text back 'sorry, I don't think you're a good fit for our pub'. Can you imagine?

Good for you going to get your owed money though.

PlanDeRaccordement · 24/07/2020 20:43

Was this job offer verbal only? Or did you sign a contract? Because if no contract is signed, the shift you worked was a trial shift and you won’t be getting any pay for it.

It’s a horrible immoral practice, but not illegal. So I agree with superram, it’s best to do nothing and find a new job. If you go in and cause a row, it would be very easy for them to call round to other pubs and restaurants and tell them a horror story and not to hire you.

RaspberryToupee · 24/07/2020 20:43

It’s not uncommon to have an unpaid trial shift in pubs, at least it wasn’t 10 years ago when I was working in the pubs. It sucks and it’s shitty when they don’t take you on after but there’s not much you can do. They won’t give you the money tomorrow and it’s really not worth going to small claims over for one shift.

Shizzlestix · 24/07/2020 20:44

I would go in, ask for wages, ask for reason they no longer want to employ you then leave a really honest review on social media etc. Very poor behaviour on their behalf.

EvePolastri938 · 24/07/2020 20:44

Yeah maybe it didn't, and it's fine, they could have given me some feedback.

Apart from a couple of dodgy pints at first I made the others fine so I wonder if it's because i'm quiet /shy and maybe don't fit in with the 'barmaid' persona.

I will go in though to take the wages and just be very matter of fact with them.

Thanks for the support everyone. I agree what should I have expected for cash in hand below min wage. But even so, lacking the bare minumum of decency to say sorry we won't be taking you on, that's shameful.

None of us were told that it was a trial shift, it was called 'training'.

I've seen a few threads on here about pubs/restaurants using the 'trial shift' premise to get free/cheap labour - essentially using a succession of trial shifts to make up the numbers without employing anyone at the end of it. It sounds like you've been used, OP. I hope you find a decent employer next time!

Littlejacksmummy · 24/07/2020 21:10

To be honest, it sounds like you didn't pass their standards. Move on. They saw very little of you or your capabilities. Hold your head high by not making a mounain out of it or you could just embarrass yourself.

MissConductUS · 24/07/2020 21:12

I tended bar while at uni. It's a job that needs an outgoing personality. If they didn't want you back I wouldn't take it too personally. They should pay your wages though.

I expect to be treated well for a cash in hand job so I can dodge paying tax on my second job.

Did I get that right?

2bazookas · 24/07/2020 21:17

whoah there, maybe someone just messed up their notifications, hasn't put your details on the right phone etc.

listsandbudgets · 24/07/2020 21:20

I'd be pretty pissed off to be treated like that. It does sound like they pulled one of those tricks where the training was effectively an unpaid trail / interview but they should ahve told you that up front.

On the bright side, at least you now know how to pull a pint which is a useful skill in itself Grin

listsandbudgets · 24/07/2020 21:23

Of course if you really want to piss off the management and make things a bit better for other staff you can always read this and act accordingly!!

If an employer does not pay the minimum wage

KensalGreen · 24/07/2020 21:29

A few years ago I worked at a pub for a month then one week they didn’t text me my shifts for the next week. I asked them about it and they said they’d let me know then just never contacted me again Confused

KensalGreen · 24/07/2020 21:31

Really sorry this happened to you btw! I know it feels rubbish.

roses2 · 24/07/2020 21:47

Did they actually say you will get paid for the shift?

EvePolastri938 · 24/07/2020 21:48

Yeah, well she went round asking everyone what shifts they had done that week so she could sort out wages (the week the pub opened)

Pinkyyy · 24/07/2020 21:51

Well if you were planning on illegally working then you don't get the perks of a legal job.

Gabrielknight · 24/07/2020 22:06

Sounds like an unpaid trial to me.....very common in pubs.
