Been treated disgustingly by this pub

I got offered a part-time job at a pub.
I've done waitressing before but never pulled pints, I told them this and they said it was no problem and they would train me.

Did my training/shift last week. Made a few dodgy pints but picked it up by the end. Did alright with the till, pub was very quiet so just cleaned tables and glasses, didn't seem to be any issues.

I told them I had a holiday booked for later this summer and they seemed very easygoing, saying that they were very flexible and that we could sort it out between us on whatsapp.

The manager was mainly sat there with her friend once she had trained me, she seemed to trust me enough to leave me to it.

Anyway i've since texted twice with my availability and showed that i'm keen, and no reply.

She told me that the rota had been sent out individually to everyone as some of us would be going to different pubs.

Anyway, still haven't received a rota of any kind and i've just been deleted off the whatsapp group. Text the manager to ask why and zero reply.

So I guess this is their way of saying they don't want me. Appalling, i've never been treated that way before. They owe me money for my shift so I will be there tomorrow and will not be nice to them.

I'm fortunate to have a main job and this was intended as a part time summer job, but I really feel for people whose main job that may have been.

Plus, they pay £8.00 per hour, and i'm 29 so it's illegal as min.wage is £8.72.

What would you do ? Very appalling.

Why would you accept that then? If an employer is openly breaking the law, why would you work for them?

rayoflightboy · 25/07/2020 12:40

They went around asking what shifts you want to make it seem legit.

You have been had, mark it as experience and move on.

spinningaround72 · 25/07/2020 12:55

@roarfeckingroar

Why would they owe you money for a trial?
Because that's how it is when people work for you - you pay them.
roarfeckingroar · 25/07/2020 15:45

@spinningaround72 not for a trial of a couple of hours surely

Rainingheavily · 25/07/2020 15:52

OP once you have been paid, please name the pub. So we have the choice to avoid it.

MrsGrindah · 25/07/2020 15:57

@SmudgeButt I think your advice is out of date!

Why not? Would you have a building or a plumber round but ask them to do a couple of hours trial for free before you decide if you're going to use them on a project?

MrsGrindah · 25/07/2020 16:09

@spinningaround72 unpaid work trials are a real thing. But it’s usually made very clear that that is what it is. In this case employer definitely shady so tried to pass it off as something else ie training.

Cam2020 · 25/07/2020 16:12

I've seen a few threads on here about pubs/restaurants using the 'trial shift' premise to get free/cheap labour - essentially using a succession of trial shifts to make up the numbers without employing anyone at the end of it

I was going to a say exactly the same thing.

popcornlover · 25/07/2020 16:47

Hope you get the money you’re owed OP. It’s probably a lucky escape as they don’t sound like nice people at all. I wouldn’t wonder about it too much - don’t wonder what you did “wrong” as you probably did nothing wrong at all. It’s more likely that they can’t afford many staff due to Covid. Should imagine they thought they’d be more busy than they are. Things are slow to get going again.

@KrabbyPatties

Are you taking about the pub in Glasgow?
Which pub in Glasgow?
Grapewrath · 25/07/2020 17:43

I think pubs have firm for this.
Mind I once applied for a part time job in Pizza Hut for some extra money and the12 year old manager told me he’d give me an unpaid trial shift on Sunday evening as the lunch time shift was busy so the kitchen would be a right state. I was like ok so you wasn’t me to come and clean the kitchen for free, basically? No thanks. He seemed shocked!

weightedpunch · 25/07/2020 17:49

YANBU. My DP had the same experience of doing a trial shift and then radio silence. I've also had the same in an office job trial where I did a 5 1/2 hour trial for them to not even have the decency to say I hadn't got the job. Can't say I was saddened when that company went under.

You seem to be having a lot of drama in your life at the moment. It's one thing after another

A few years ago I worked at a pub for a month then one week they didn’t text me my shifts for the next week. I asked them about it and they said they’d let me know then just never contacted me again

Yes, same happened to my daughter and it’s happened in other pubs to a few of her friends - suddenly you’re not on the whatsapp any more. It was my DD’s first job when she was in sixth Form and she had a bit of a crisis of confidence because she couldn’t work out what she could have done Wrong. Turns out they decided to trim their workforce but didn’t have the guts/decency to tell the ones they let go.
