I'm pissed off we pay for BBC world news!

I'm pissed off we pay for BBC World News in UK but can't watch it!

BBC news is terrible - no real world news, just obsessed with talking to people with no actual facts or knowledge (ie, attention seekers) rather than giving us real news from experts or reporting what is actually happening...Feels like 1984 is actually here now.

OP posts:
GrumpyHoonMain · 24/07/2020 21:03

We don’t pay for it. It’s paid for entirely by subscriptions and advertising

jc12689 · 24/07/2020 21:30

Clearly, you've never read 1984 Hmm

I’m not sure that’s true. The BBC World News channel is part of the BBC World Service (which includes TV, radio and online), and according to this BBC link,

www.bbc.com/aboutthebbc/whatwedo/worldservice, it’s funded by the UK License Fee.

BBC World Service is funded from the licence fee. In 2016 the UK Government awarded it a £291 million grant over four years for a programme of modernisation and new language service. This grant is administered by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

sirfredfredgeorge · 24/07/2020 21:56

It's not part of the world service.

sirfredfredgeorge · 24/07/2020 21:57

It even says that on your link:

"BBC World News is our commercially funded international news and information television channel, "

honeygirlz · 24/07/2020 21:59

True, I did read that, but I wonder how much content BBC World News gets from BBC World Service?

It wouldn’t surprise me, news channels don’t really make enough profit to run themselves profitably.

TrickorTreacle · 25/07/2020 00:38

For world news, I use Reuters.

uk.reuters.com

ButteryPuffin · 25/07/2020 00:40

So how much is BBC World News personally costing you? I assume you've worked it out?

BritWifeinUSA · 25/07/2020 03:59

We have BBC World News here in the US but it has adverts.

OnceUponAPotato · 25/07/2020 04:14

It's not funded by the licence fee, it's entirely part of the BBC's commercial arm. I assume it would be difficult to broadcast in the UK because of all the advertising. Must be possible to pick it up though, given its broadcast in the rest of the world. You're not being unreasonable to say it's superior to the BBC News channel though, I much prefer it!

UtopiaMist · 25/07/2020 04:28

There is a lot of world news on the BBC’s 24 hour news channel.

user1471565182 · 25/07/2020 05:02

Do i really have to post the 'everything ''orwellian'', say idiots' link again?

Cadent · 25/07/2020 05:19

I don’t know, but you may want to write more clearly, that’s very badly written.

Goslowlysideways · 25/07/2020 05:23

23p a day. No adverts.

It’s going to go and we will miss it. But it’s the next Brexit and people are stupid.
23p a day!!!
BBC world service is well worth a listen. I don’t like football but I don’t resent it.

People like you are very strange.

90% of all news, in all outlets, is rehashed from wire services like AP and Reuters.
longtimecomin · 25/07/2020 05:27

Theres lots about the bbc that pisses me off, like why they can't be fully funded from adverts. Why there are so many local radio stations, so many channels with no thought as to whether it's what people want to see. it's just a huge organisation we're forced to pay for which we don't need. If I could 'cancel my subscription' I would but I can't, it's the fact I'm forced to pay whether I watch it or use any of its services. They haven't engaged the younger generation enough so they'll sort the bbc out in time.

Even live video reporting?

crumpet · 25/07/2020 05:43

The BBC is so valuable, it will be a crying shame if/when we eventually lose it.

StarlightLady · 25/07/2020 06:43

Not only do “we” not pay for BBC World News, it is a revenue earner for the BBC.

Time40 · 25/07/2020 07:19

Exactly. And also a crying shame if the UK service is forced to start running advertising. I would FAR rather pay a licence fee than have every single radio and TV channel ruined by adverts.

I agree. I have never been able to understand the hatred for the BBC on MN.
longwayoff · 25/07/2020 07:35

I fear you may be unwell OP, have you considered taking Mr Trump's cognitive test? It's certainly proved his critical thinking skills are up there with the best. Perhaps you would have a similar result.

crikeycrumbsblimey · 25/07/2020 07:37

The BBC is fucking amazing - bite size during lockdown anyone. I think that counts as engaging the younger generation.....

The real hate for the BBC comes from those who envy it (they can’t make money from it or control it) and those too idiotic to realise they aren’t going to represent ALL their views.

crikeycrumbsblimey · 25/07/2020 07:37

Oh and those who think you should get everything for free!

DessieSaysDiy · 25/07/2020 07:39

I’m amazed at the lack of coverage that nurses , HCA and Care home workers are not included in the pay rise. Viral online. Silent BBC
