AIBU to threaten to call police on my sister?

NC because I feel bad about this. My DS's driving licence is years out of date. She can't have renewed it since she passed her test in the 1990s, because it's the old sort without a photo on it! And she has changed address several times since then. She says she never got round to updating it, and doesn't dare to do it now because she would have to declare her previous addresses.

I've told her the licence is not valid any more, so that must invalidate her insurance. It's really serious. If she has an accident and injures someone she won't be insured. She is now refusing to speak about it. I don't want to threaten to report her, but what else can I do?

OP posts:
Stingybath · 23/07/2020 14:46

They issue them with a change of address for free now (but not sure if this is the case from paper to photo license). Just say to her they aren't arsed/don't know about her old addresses (if they were they would have contacted her before) but it's worth getting it done now. Just de-dramatise it.

InTheWings · 23/07/2020 14:48

Just tell her to change her address and update to a new licence.

Far less trouble in doing that than being found with a non-updated licence.

She will not have to give all her interim addresses.

crustycrab · 23/07/2020 14:48

@Needsomeadvicehere you are completely wrong. Keep your sticky beak out

Wilko312 · 23/07/2020 14:49

Based on fairy's post with the Gov link the license is out of date so I wouldn't be so blunt about it.

TeddyIsaHe · 23/07/2020 14:50

@Nicknacky

I wonder if the OP will return and admit she is wrong.
No, op will be too busy trying to find something else to report her sister to the police for.

What a lovely sister you are op!

AudTheDeepMinded · 23/07/2020 14:57

You must be older than twelve but don't sound it. Bet you used to sit in the back of the car and hit one another when Mum wasn't looking?
'She started it',
'No, she started it',
'I'm telling, MUUUUUUMMMM!!'

RandyLionandDirtyDog · 23/07/2020 14:58

Of course she needs to get her driving licences updated. You said she’d moved addresses frequently, so she could face a fine if she was stopped and they discovered her licence hasn't been kept up to date.

Reporting to the police is a bit OTT though. If you’ve mentioned that she should change it, you’ve done your bit, the rest is up to her.

LaLaLandIsNoFun · 23/07/2020 14:58

Christ - how boring does ones life have to be to feel the need to poke ones nose into other people’s affairs?

RandomMess · 23/07/2020 15:00

She just need to apply for a photo one at her current address and declare that she's just moved.

DH did this (still had his parents address but tbf he doesn't drive so no insurance worries) just applied as if this was the first time he had moved 🤷🏽‍♀️

He only did it because his parents were selling up and he had no photo ID and cheaper than a passport.

Hailtomyteeth · 23/07/2020 15:01

Mine is old-style and completely valid.

SoddingWeddings · 23/07/2020 15:01

"You must get a new licence if:

you change your address
your licence has been defaced, lost, stolen or destroyed
you change your name - you must apply by post using paper form D1 or D2, you can get them from most Post Offices
you’re getting a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) driver qualification card (DQC)
If none of these apply and your paper licence is still valid, you do not need to exchange it for a photocard version."

So she should have her up to date address on her licence, but it doesn't invalidate her insurance. Get a grip.

WaxOnFeckOff · 23/07/2020 15:03

Tell her not to worry. I did similar but I hadn't driven for years so felt no risk and then tied myself up in knots as I'd filled in the change of address but never posted it and then had moved again - twice,

Anyway, I'd started driving again so finally got the balls to just send it off with details updated and they didn't question anything, just sent my shiny new licence out.

Just tell her to update it and not to worry about the past.

Nicknacky · 23/07/2020 15:06

WaxOnFeckOff I don’t think the OP is interested in reassuring her sister😂.

iklboo · 23/07/2020 15:06

There's got to be some underlying issue why you want to play Stasi with your sister. Not to mention you being wrong. Glad you weren't around for the witch trials.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/07/2020 15:06

This is the annoying kind of thing that some parents do to their kids - threatening to report them to the police if they do something naughty. All that does is gives them a lifelong unhealthy fear of the police and makes them paranoid that they'll be locked up and the key thrown away in later life if they put their bin out too early or accidentally drop a piece of litter.

But she's old enough to have had a driving licence for some time, so I'm guessing that neither of you are toddlers.

Change of address form, notify current address, £5 in the photo-me-booth then countersigned by any of a range of non-related people who've known her for a while - friend who works for the NHS/police/vicar/local shopkeeper etc. - send it off plus any fee for a replacement licence (maybe a tenner?) and all sorted. They won't send her off to Holloway for life, honest.

Her old paper licence would have been valid until she's 70, had she not changed address, but she has, so she needs a new photo one. They're very handy whenever you need photo ID for anything and there are various government websites where you can quickly apply/renew/submit things online by using it as accepted ID.

WaxOnFeckOff · 23/07/2020 15:08

@Nickynacky guess it doesn't work like that in my family - I thought we were normal...:o

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/07/2020 15:08

Was she a member of the Tufty Club when she was a kid? If so and she hasn't kept her details updated, you could always report her for that, as unlike with driving licences, that is an imprisonable offence....

malmi · 23/07/2020 15:14

OP, if your sister were genuinely driving around uninsured then there would be a discussion to have.

The fact that the address is out of date does NOT mean that the licence itself is inherently invalid and she is driving unlicenced.

Therefore, the insurance is not invalid. She is not driving around uninsured.

Ultimately it wouldn't make any difference to the person being hit in any case, so the only impact would be the financial impact to your sister, which (unless there is a backstory involving you bankrolling her) is irrelevant anyway.

Relax. It's fine.

iklboo · 23/07/2020 15:14

@WaxOnFeckOff - the OP is threatening to call the police on her sister for a total non-issue, not seeking to reassure a worried sibling she's done nothing wrong.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 23/07/2020 15:18

Short answer - just tel her it's OK, she can just send it in. It's free!

www.licence.plus/?gclid=Cj0KCQjw6uT4BRD5ARIsADwJQ1_MWzQObFCONPZpPwBBQn2tEeYpVYOW25exnhh78baRb0cBXFkgfOMaAuz4EALw_wcB

Longer answer: paper licences don't need renewing. They need rplacing if you move, change your name, get married etc.

You insurance is still valid etc. You just get a totally unecessary fine, it £0 - 20 to get whatver changes you need!

If she rnews now nothing bad will happen.

If she waits until something happens she may well get fined!

Now, grow up, play nice, and reassure your DSis and stop trying to scare the shit out of her with misinformation!

saraclara · 23/07/2020 15:21

She's not driving without a license. Hers is valid as far as insurance goes. So the police will find it really odd to have someone shop her simply because she hasn't updated her address.

She won't have to mention any of her intervening addresses if she opts to update now (which would be sensible)

The pp who said it has to be renewed every ten years is wrong. If you have a photo driving license, you have to provide a new photo every ten years. That's purely because phot driving licenses can be used for ID, so the photo needs to be reasonably current.

mumto2teenagers · 23/07/2020 15:21

I would make her aware of the issue and then leave it to her to decide what action she takes.

crustycrab · 23/07/2020 15:22

@Wilko312 why not be blunt? The OP has scared her sister with misinformation and even after being told came back here to argue the toss.

Her sisters insurance isn't invalid. It's not "very serious" Hmm

WaxOnFeckOff · 23/07/2020 15:24

@iklboo, yes, but the tone of the post is a bit strange as if she just wants to force her sister into action and that her sister is worried. I think deep down OP is worried rather than really wanting to report her sister.

She needs to get a grip herself about it. The sister has actually done something wrong but it's easily rectified.

Or indeed this is a massive story and it's actually the OP who is worried about her own licence, either or, it's easily sorted and better fixed than left.

SoupDragon · 23/07/2020 15:26

@hellywelly3

Driving licenses need renewing every 10 years. How do people not know this!
Only the photo card needs renewing. The OP's sister has an old style paper license which does not need renewing. It does need the address updating which will result in getting a photo card one though.
