AIBU to threaten to call police on my sister?

NC because I feel bad about this. My DS's driving licence is years out of date. She can't have renewed it since she passed her test in the 1990s, because it's the old sort without a photo on it! And she has changed address several times since then. She says she never got round to updating it, and doesn't dare to do it now because she would have to declare her previous addresses.

I've told her the licence is not valid any more, so that must invalidate her insurance. It's really serious. If she has an accident and injures someone she won't be insured. She is now refusing to speak about it. I don't want to threaten to report her, but what else can I do?

Why would you come out with all that bullshit instead of simply having a 20 second Google, OP?

All she needs to do is change her address. They're not interested in any other addresses and she can still drive while she's waiting for it to be done.

hellywelly3 · 23/07/2020 14:19

Sorry meant photo card driving license, paper are valid as long as you don’t change address

Itsjustabitofbanter · 23/07/2020 14:19

Oh bore off and leave your sister alone op. You’ve just been told the license is valid. Now you’re desperately trying to scrabble round for something else to report her for. Get a life

Nicknacky · 23/07/2020 14:19

Her insurance isn’t valid FFS.

FluffyKittensinabasket · 23/07/2020 14:20

Only on Mumsnet do people think the police can be called for everything and that people can be “reported.”

Woodentopper · 23/07/2020 14:21

It is valid.

Having a wrong address may be a bit naughty but it's hardly a serious crime, just forget about it.

I'm all for people reporting serious crimes, violence, theft etc but have little time for people who report others for all manner of minor offences that don't concern them.

VeganVeal · 23/07/2020 14:21

Her entitlement to drive is still valid, but her licence isnt iyswim

CouldBeOuting · 23/07/2020 14:22

I’ve still got a paper licence. I haven’t changed my address or my name since I got it in 1992! It is definitely still legal!

It used to be free to get a photo card licence if it was for a change of address but cost £££s if it was just to get the new licence that’s why I’ve never changed mine.

VeganVeal · 23/07/2020 14:22

Her insurance would still be valid

katy1213 · 23/07/2020 14:25

Why do you even care? It's her problem to sort out if there are repercussions. What else can you do? Mind your own business.

safariboot · 23/07/2020 14:25

I wouldn't bother reporting it and I doubt the police would be bothered.

But I'd tell her she really should update her address. It's illegal to not do so and if important letters go to the old address she could end up in deep shit. And if she's trying to get out fines and charges, I guarantee it will all catch up with her.

LemonTT · 23/07/2020 14:26

@Needsomeadvicehere

I did look it up and found that, as long as she got the old paper licence before 1998, it could still be valid. But as you can be fined £1000 if your licence shows your old address, which hers does, surely that means it isn't valid? Which would mean the insurance isn't valid? Which is serious.
You are desperate to get her in to trouble. If only karma were a real thing.
Bettysprocker · 23/07/2020 14:28

Fucking hell I'm glad you're not my sister!

DreamingOfMrsG · 23/07/2020 14:28

There we go op Biscuit

AIBU to threaten to call police on my sister?
mouse70 · 23/07/2020 14:29

Paper driving liscence still valid. Mine expires 2023. She should update address though.

Louise91417 · 23/07/2020 14:31

Is there nothing of more importance you could be concerning yourself with in your own lifeHmm

Rwoolley · 23/07/2020 14:32

Yabu

Also the police won't do anything really

Tell her to update the address, they don't care how long you've left it as long as your putting it right now (I have done it before and so as many friends who didn't realise you had to update the address!)

CEBT · 23/07/2020 14:32

Yabu to threaten to report your sister to the police because she hasnt updated her address on her driving licence. Your poor sister. She should probably update her address but what an overreaction!

Nicknacky · 23/07/2020 14:32

I’ve just realising my post should have said her insurance isn’t invalid, not “isn’t valid”🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️. I confused my positives and negatives in the same short sentence.

MinorArcana · 23/07/2020 14:36

I’m pretty sure you don’t have to declare every previous address.

I updated my driving licence last year, I had to fill in the paper form because some details had changed.

I’m sure the section for the address only had room for 1 previous address on it, presumably your sister would just have to write in the address on her paper license rather than a list of all previous addresses.

You get the paper forms for free from post offices, so it would be easy for you to get a form and check that.

RoLaren · 23/07/2020 14:40

They want to know your address history for the last 3 years. So if she's lived at her current address for 3 years that's all she needs to put on the form. But I don't suppose you'll tell her that will you?

penelopeplums · 23/07/2020 14:42

It depends if you like being malicious and unpleasant. Your call.

Quarantimespringclean · 23/07/2020 14:43

Why is this your business? You’ve told your sister what you think. Now it’s up to her whether she takes your advice or not.

userxx · 23/07/2020 14:44

Fucking hell I'm glad you're not my sister!

I've never been happier to be an only child!!!

Nicknacky · 23/07/2020 14:44

I wonder if the OP will return and admit she is wrong.
