To not buy a house next to the school if you don’t like the sound of children.

I have a friend. Her and her hubby bought a house directly behind a school. Their garden backs onto the school field. A pathway goes down the near their house from the school.

But they are always moaning about the noise from the school field.. the school have been spending a lot more time than usual outside at the minute when it’s sunny due to covid and outdoor learning but they moaned about the noise before then.

My children go to the same school and I just feel that if you buy a house near a school you should expect the noise?? There is only one school in the area and they bought the house closest to the field/playgrounds.

They should've known it would be noisy. I'd find it hard to have sympathy.

YANBU. We actually like the sound of kids though. I wouldn't buy within the typical parking area for pick-up/drop-off, but we find it lovely to hear children laughing and playing from the nursery and school that are 1 and 2 streets away from us.

Zero sympathy. Same if they moan about traffic at 9am and 3.30pm (although shit parking is a reasonable rant).

Totally agree. Similarly to anyone who buys a house near an airport / train station who then complains about the airplane / train noise.

In my mum's garden, you can hear the noises of breaktimes from the secondary school, which is several streets away. It's not intrusive, but it's there. There is no way I'd buy a house that backed onto a primary.

I'd laugh at them and remind them that's what they get for buying a house next to the school.

We liked living near the school hearing the DC play etc. Far better to be near the field than the road that services the school.

I think people who moan about the sound of children playing during normal daytime hours are absolute arseholes.

YANBU, this is up there with people who buy property with a public right of way through the garden and then complain about people using said public right of way.

sounds familiar, There’s been a small war in my village from some twats who moved in next to the church and are now throwing a shit fit because they don’t like the bells chiming on the hour.

In my home town a family bought a house right next to the church..... then started petitioning to get the church bells stopped 🙄

This is why 'location' is so important. You can't move next to a Church, a school, a railway, above a nightclub etc and then complain about the drawbacks!

We live on the same road as a school. Were probably 10 doors down the road and I can hear them lol.

YANBU, they really should have considered it

We bought a house that only had a small residential car park and a tree line between us and a primary school field. Even when I was around a lot on mat leave, it didn't bother me. The only time it became a bit annoying was the day they had the summer fair with loudspeakers, music etc but loud noise for a few hours one day a year doesn't seem unreasonable.

I don’t deny it probably gets noisy. I’m a little further away and can hear children in the distance at break times but it baffles me. School has been there for a very long time way before the houses were built where they live. The school parking in the area is not an issue as it’s only a small school and there’s a car park around the corner!

Yeh I wouldn’t buy a house next to a school that would drive me mad. The church thing though, I moved opposite a children’s centre and on Sunday I dont know why but it seems to convert into some kind of church, its really annoying as they would be preaching early in the morning using speakers and singing. Thankfully it’s stopped for the moment!

Infants school just round the corner. Love it.

We bought a house at the back of a primary school, the only thing I considered was if the parking would be a problem, it wasn't as most parents park at the front of the school. I love hearing the children playing at break times, sports day etc, have really missed them in the last few months.

My house backs on to school playing fields - I hear a sort of happy babble which I rather like. Children playing is a feel good sound IMO.

Your friends knew it was that close to a school and yet still complain about the noise...that sound like a couple of entitled idiots tbf

I live near a school and I like the sound of children playing it’s lovely!

I know I sound daft but we bought a house that backs onto a secondary school playing field and although we'd never complain about the noise, it was a shock to us just HOW noisy it is. We anticipated kids traipsing down the street in the morning, parking issues and lunchtimes. What I didn't realise is that there would be a (different) group out on the playing fields pretty much constantly every day, and noise from PE (eg football, hockey etc) is loud. If I'm home in the day its a fairly constant stream of whistles, teachers shouting directions and a lot of 'oi you nob!' from teenage lads to mates! Clearly theres a lot more PE on the timetable than when I was a child.

It's not a big deal to us as evenings and weekends are quiet and that's the main thing. Lockdown has been harder as they've been using the grounds more and at odd times (eg starting earlier) but it's just one of those things.

We back on to a school's playing fields. The school was there when we bought the house, it was an informed decision. Only one of our immediate neighbours complains about the noise, but to be fair, they complain about everything!
