Wrapping paper!

missrks · 21/07/2020 15:42

Hello!

Is wrapping paper something that any of you would pay good money for? Is it important to you? Does it matter if something is beautifully wrapped or is it more of an inconvenience to buy and just pick up the cheapest sheet/roll you can find?

My partner thinks it's a massive pain in the arse, but I think it just makes a gift if it's beautifully wrapped!

Who's right?

To each their own. We wrap presents in magazine sheets and put them in a present bag, which get reused.

There is too much waste in the world already for me, so this is my little way of fighting back.

totallyyesno · 21/07/2020 15:46

I love beautifully wrapped presents but I also hate wrapping so I tend to buy from shops that wrap gifts for you (lots where I live luckily).

Purpleartichoke · 21/07/2020 15:50

Every Christmas I drive across town to the store that has the thickest, most gorgeous wrapping paper. Then I spend time picking out a curated mix and settling on a theme. Then I head home and make custom gift tags to match the theme. One year it was polar bears, another 3-d snowflakes.

It’s one of those absolutely trivial things that bring me great joy.

CatBatCat · 21/07/2020 15:50

Waste of time.

Meredithgrey1 · 21/07/2020 15:51

Generally I'm not fussed, but if it was a special present (maybe something more expensive for a big birthday for example) I like it to look nice.

PawPawNoodle · 21/07/2020 15:52

For Christmas I tend to buy nice quality wrapping paper that is recyclable, where possible I use paper that could be used for other occasions.

If it's a woman's birthday I try to find a nice square scarf at a charity shop to wrap the item in and then it becomes another gift. Otherwise I use a generic gift bag that can be reused.

I totally get that! It really is each to their own.

I would always hope it would be reused or certainly recyclable.

I bought some gorgeous paper from a local shop that was £2.50 per sheet. DP was like "you're bonkers, what a waste etc"

It's a light hearted convo, he's not annoyed or anything!

Yesss! It's so enjoyable!

Absolutely love it but refuse to spend huge amounts of money on it these days - it's easy to spend £5 just to wrap a gift nicely.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 21/07/2020 15:58

I am a fan of tissue paper - so l put an unwrapped gift in a recycled gift bag then cover it with recycled tissue paper - l can pretend it is to save the trees but the truth is, l am rubbish at wrapping!. But l do love a nicely wrapped gift with ribbon and bows etc!

maxdash · 21/07/2020 16:40

This sounds like market research to me.

I love beautifully wrapped presents, and love wrapping presents beautifully. But I don't anymore due to the environmental impact.I use recycled materials.

JamMakingWannaBe · 21/07/2020 16:45

Ever since I was given two posh 100g bars of chocolate for my 30th Birthday, EXQUISITELY wrapped in sheets of tissue paper and straw twine I'm a gift wrapping convert.

I still remember the gift 10+ years on and it's not so much the value of the present, but the personal time taken to wrap it so elegantly.

I'm definitely a double sided sticky tape, ribbons and bows person.

Elouera · 21/07/2020 16:50

I use gift bags more and more as they are just so much easier and quicker- especially for oddly shaped gifts. No need for scissors and cellotape either.

We re-use our gift bags, especially Christmas ones and some are 10yrs old! If I buy wrapping paper, its in the after Christmas sales. I got a few rolls of lovely stuff this year for 1p a roll!!!

Hahah I can see how it would look like that.

Can I ask what was the value of the last gift bag you bought?

Only kidding - I work in sports.

Was curious if I was being a total dafty spending so much and enjoying the whole process of making it special.

Nah. Big rolls at £1 each from one of the card shop chains and job done. If I've ever seen expensive wrapping paper I definitely haven't noticed.

iklboo · 21/07/2020 16:58

I really don't care to be honest. They look pretty but it still all ends up in recycling.

Hellohah · 21/07/2020 17:01

I use brown paper and string!

purpledagger · 21/07/2020 17:09

I'm not bothered about wrapping paper and I just go for cheap and cheerful wrapping paper.

TimeWastingButFun · 21/07/2020 17:10

I love nice wrapping paper, but prefer to use tissue paper and put it in a pretty box, depending on the gift. Or tissue paper and wrapping paper.

Soubriquet · 21/07/2020 17:12

I like decent wrapping paper and I will pick one that suits the person but I won’t pay more than £3 a roll

msbevvy · 21/07/2020 17:14

My DH recently received some birthday presents via Amazon. They were gift wrapped in pretty cloth pouches tied up with ribbon.

I can see these being circulated around the family for many a year.

GeneralPinoChez · 21/07/2020 17:18

Nope, I never buy wrapping paper. I use brown paper and do all sorts of embellishments, patterns, lacing, stencils etc. There's loads on Pinterest. It's so much classier and all recyclable. I love wrapping up Grin

MsSquiz · 21/07/2020 17:24

I like to wrap Christmas gifts for the adults in thick brown parcel paper and butchers twine and a sprig of holly at the knot.

The kids get bright, colourful, fun wrapping paper

For birthdays, I tend to coordinate the wrapping for the person/gift. Eg, one of my nephews is a huge Star Wars fan, so he gets his gifts wrapped in Star Wars wrapping paper. My BIL like marvel comics so he's had vintage looking marvel wrapping paper rather than the kid style paper.

I do spend a lot of time choosing cards, wrapping paper, string/twine/ribbon and gift tags but I know it's for my benefit!

StrawBeretMoose · 21/07/2020 17:24

It looks pretty but I don't much bother with it now and the waste at my parents' house at Christmas if we all get together makes me wince, a couple of bin liners full of wrapping paper. And balloons tied to gifts!

It gets scrunched up and binned, no recycling of wrapping paper, they would think it miserly.

JudgeRindersMinder · 21/07/2020 17:27

I buy up a load of rolls of silver or gold non Xmas looking wrapping paper in Sainsbury’s in January when they want rid of it at 25p a roll, and buy gift ribbon in bulk from eBay so I can use it through the year and have the nicely wrapped gifts for very little cost. I’d rather spend the extra fiver on the gift
