To think all keyworkers should have their tax stopped for the next two years

All of those that worked throughout covid need to be rewarded. Why not just stop all tax for every nurse, care worker, teacher (and assistant), gas engineer, pharmacist etc. They kept the country going and weren't just at home on 80% pay (and actually better off with less outgoing). Isn't it time to now reward them appropriately?

@FallingIguanas

I disagree and I'm a HCP. Parking charges are another matter though.
Yes, I quite agree with you on parking charges... bloody disgrace.
rwalker · 21/07/2020 16:59

Being a key worker myself worked all through in the job I'm paid to do yes exposed to some risk like 1000's of people
I do not need or want discounts ,free sandwiches, pizza ,endless recognition ,Que jumping ,hero worship .

Whilst I agree paying no tax would be lovely but when you grow up to be an adult you realise money doesn't grow on trees and for everything free some where along the line someone has to pay for it.

might be on my own but quite happy to be paid for doing my job I'm employed to do .

Streamingbannersofdawn · 21/07/2020 17:00

You are being ridiculous...the list of "keyworkers" is a lot longer than you think.

Plenty of people worked from home full time with no childcare. Lots of furloughed workers lost jobs completely or significantly struggled financially.

Completely stupid suggestion.

Bluntness100 · 21/07/2020 17:01

They key worker list is huge, it covers millions of people op. I think maybe you need to take some time to actually read the list?

Alwaysinpain · 21/07/2020 17:04

Why is this virus the government's fault?!

zoemum2006 · 21/07/2020 17:07

Laughs hysterically....

I would have killed to have been juggling working from home with home schooling my kids. As it is my business is the weddings industry which got completely cancelled leaving me with almost no income and no support available.

So if my business revokers and I get to pay 3 different types of taxes I'd prefer those who continued to earn during 'Rona to continue to pay taxes.

JorisBonson · 21/07/2020 17:07

I'm a keyworker (emergency services) and worked throughout. I was also in the enviable position where I didn't have to worry about losing my job. That's more important than any tax break.

Randomness12 · 21/07/2020 17:09

I work for the NHS, was redeployed to support and worked throughout. No - I worked, I was paid. I don’t deserve extra for doing my job and nor do any others in my opinion.

Greydrapex · 21/07/2020 17:12

You are being unreasonable. The country is in enough financial difficulty as it is! Everyone will end up paying more tax to pat back the zillions given out.

maddiemookins16mum · 21/07/2020 17:13

I’ve heard it all now.
YABVVVVU.

What is more likely is the basic tax code will go from 1250L to maybe 1150L (or even lower 🙁). This has cost (and will continue to so) millions, nay billions, of pounds, that needs to be recouped.

Alexandernevermind · 21/07/2020 17:14

Key worker is the new vegan; the very first thing they tell you is that they are one.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 21/07/2020 17:14

Dh still worked though lockdown despite not being keyworkers. It is not as simple as that and we don't have the money to pay for it.

yomommasmomma · 21/07/2020 17:16

I worked full time from home in a very busy job during lockdown and looked after and home schooled a 5 year old and a one year old. Please can I have a tax cut?

I wish I had been a key worker getting out of the house everyday or someone who was furloughed!

shinyredbus · 21/07/2020 17:16

🤦🏻‍♀️ No - or course that’s no feasible. Where is this money coming from?

NavyBerry · 21/07/2020 17:17

Start with giving out your savings. Maybe then work for free for 2 years to sponsor your suggestion. Once done you might be a bit more on the ball with how economy functions to suggest that

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 21/07/2020 17:19

Don’t be ridiculous op.

The list of keyworkers was huge and wasn’t just front line staff. Many keyworkers were working from home.
Many non keyworkers were working from home throughout whilst looking after kids and trying to hone school.
How the fuck do you expect the country to pay for that?!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 21/07/2020 17:22

@Alexandernevermind

Key worker is the new vegan; the very first thing they tell you is that they are one.
That's harsh. I said I was on here because its relevant. I dont say it in RL. because either people know what I do for a living or they don't. I've not taken advantage of any of the "perks" such as priority slots in supermarkets etc because I don't work shifts so havent needed them. I've not been given any free stuff because social care is the poor relation. I'm not complaining - I'm very glad I've got a job I love. My ds has worked from home throughout lockdown. He isn't classed as a key worker but he does work in the public sector. His mental health has really suffered in lockdown but he's not getting any praise for what he's doing.
Aragog · 21/07/2020 17:22

I don't think many people would be overly happy with a lot of key workers paying no tax.

Dh is a key worker (as am I but in a much lower wage) as a solicitor. Her earns a 6 figure salary which continued throughout lockdown - he was working full time from home and busier than normal.

But I can't imagine many people being overly impressed by someone in his financial position having to pay no higher rate tax for a year or more!

Dartsplayer · 21/07/2020 17:22

Didn't mean to offend anyone by assuming that anyone not being a keyworker was furloughed and even on the keyworker list you could cherry pick which professions were worthy of not paying tax - priceless!! 😂😂 In case you hadn't noticed, the Government told us all to stay at home and work from home and some of us are still furloughed - and shock, horror haven't even been to a beach during lockdown - and may not have a job to go back to and will have to claim benefits for the first time in our lives at the ripe old age of 49!!

Aragog · 21/07/2020 17:24

Key worker is the new vegan; the very first thing they tell you is that they are one.

I disagree. Only time I use the phrase is on MN on these kind of threads.

@EmmaGrundyForPM & @Aragog its tongue in cheek as I am one myself due to the nature of my work, but my business partner and I do chuckle when some people loudly announce key worker status as they leave the car.

Hoppinggreen · 21/07/2020 17:33

DH is a keyworker on a very large salary in IT. He has saved a fortune by not travelling to work etc so it’s really not necessary In our case and I imagine in quiet a few

OnceUponAPotato · 21/07/2020 17:35

Great! I'm a key worker, married to another key worker. My job is secure, I saved a considerable amount of money during lockdown (no commuting, no nursery fees), I've just saved even more by paying no stamp duty. I even had three weeks off, on full pay, when working from home full time with a toddler became too much. It would be entirely reasonable for neither me nor DH to contribute to the costs of Covid. Oh, did I mention we are both higher rate taxpayers?

Back to reality, please can we bin this bloody "keyworker" term and the reverence which goes with it. There are something like 10 MILLION key workers in this country. My work is genuinely 'key', but frankly I find it offensive to be put in the same category as a frontline medical/care worker, or those who have had to go in to their workplace throughout. Not to mention the fact that, broadly speaking, people who have been furloughed are the ones at risk of redundancy. Why don't we say that everyone deserves fair pay for their work - yes, many people are vastly underpaid for what they do, but it's hardly a new problem.

TheHoneyBadger · 21/07/2020 17:36

I have not rtft but am guessing you've been repeatedly ripped a new one.

I also think the poll shows how very not working class mumsnet is - despite the odd consultant etc most keyworkers are low paid and have continued to have to pay for transport etc throughout lockdown.

All the furloughed office workers or working from home middle class would have fits at the idea of us being given a tax break.

whereorwhere · 21/07/2020 17:38

Yeah great idea let's add that to the bill that generations will already be paying off. The government payments are about survival of the economy it's not who do we like let's give them a tax break. I'm happy for my taxes to go up to pay for what was an absolute necessity but that is not a necessity - yes they've worked hard but they haven't seen a cut in pay so they don't need a tax break
