Benefit for 18yr old son

cosmobrown · 21/07/2020 00:33

HI. I'm just wondering what benefit, if any, my son should be applying for. He is having a year out before uni, and so far has not managed to get a job at all.
Does UC count our savings, as he lives with us? Or just what he has?
If he could contribute to the household, it would really help at the moment.

A year out? He can work in McDonald's or Asda. A year out is not what the benefits system is for

BritWifeinUSA · 21/07/2020 00:37

Wgat is he intending to do during this year-long holiday? If he’s able, he is expected to work unless he is wealthy enough to finance his lifestyle without a job. What makes you think the taxpayer is responsible for his decision to take a year off from adulthood?

DisobedientHamster · 21/07/2020 00:38

It's all UC now. He needs to apply for UC.

milkysmum · 21/07/2020 00:39

Yes your money will be counted if he lives in your household. He needs to get a job not claim benefit for a year.

youhave4substitutes · 21/07/2020 00:40

He shouldn't be applying for anything other than a job.

This times a thousand.
bookmum08 · 21/07/2020 00:43

Does Jobs Seekers Allowance still exist? He might be entitled to this. I did from when I finished my a levels (June ish - I was age 18) to when I got a job the following October.

bookmum08 · 21/07/2020 00:45

The OP has said he has applied for jobs. I don't know if people have noticed but the job market isn't great at the moment with that pesky covid malarkey.

It's all Universal Credit now.
bookmum08 · 21/07/2020 00:55

Ok if no more JSA he should apply for UC. He is looking for a job so he should be entitled to help.

Dreamstosell · 21/07/2020 00:56

Universal credit and your savings will not be taken into account

Smallsteps88 · 21/07/2020 00:59

Fucking hell. People being made redundant up and down the country, businesses shutting down, people with 30 years experience up against thousands of others for a single job and people are expecting an 18 year old to just be able to walk into McDonald’s and grab a job? Hmm give the kid a break. Jobs aren’t ten a penny right now.

Smallsteps88 · 21/07/2020 01:00

@youhave4substitutes

Wrong! He should apply for universal credit to support himself whilst he looks for jobs. It’s exactly what it’s for.
Lottiebugz22 · 21/07/2020 01:17

He can claim universal credit. They can also help him with his CV and job searches. Good luck to him and hope he finds a job soon :) x

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 21/07/2020 01:23

What sort of jobs is he applying for? Are they realistic considering his lack of experience etc? Especially at this time. If he is literally applying for everything he could do, and getting no luck then UC could be something to look into. I wouldn’t be happy if he was relying on this to support his ‘year out’ tbh though.

eaglejulesk · 21/07/2020 01:24

@Smallsteps88 - well said! There really are some judgemental people on MN, and I swear they are breeding!

FortunesFave · 21/07/2020 01:24

UC and looking for a job. He'll get a job if he tries.

alexdgr8 · 21/07/2020 02:01

just read of 483 applicants for 2 pub jobs,
and 15,000, yes fifteen thousand, for 10 openings in an engineering firm.

cosmobrown · 21/07/2020 02:05

Whoa! I knew MN was judgemental, but steady on!
We lost 70% of our income overnight in March. Dh has now lost his main job (yes he has always worked more than 1 job). His industry is not likely to up start again until 2021. We are not entitled to any financial help from any source. We are living off savings that will not last forever.
Ds deferred his uni place opting to get a years industry experience, then Co-vid happened.
He has exhausted applying for relevant placement type jobs (apparently he's "too clever") and has also been applying for anything, but without success yet.

I'm glad to hear that he can apply for UC. That will help until he can earn something. Thank you to the people who responded to my post appropriately.

UC and im sure he can claim housing benefit for his room and pay you rent
I know afew people who do it

BarbedBloom · 21/07/2020 02:17

A friend of mine is a manager in McDonald's. They just had 200 applicants for their advertised job. They binned applications of anyone without recent experience in the same role.

DisobedientHamster · 21/07/2020 02:28

The rules are really tricky on this if you're living at home.

Yes, and it seems to be getting worse. I'm sorry you have had so many unpleasant replies OP. Good luck to you all Flowers

Christ on a bike. Sometimes I get very down and despairing when I come on here. Straight off the starting block posters who are snippy and judgemental and haven't even read the effing OP properly.

Yes, as other more helpful and literate posters have said, everyone has to apply for UC now and your savings are irrelevant as he is an adult, so only his own savings are taken onto account. I don't know if the rules have changed, but I was unable to get housing benefit while living with my parents, although I was on incapacity benefit at the time.
