Sony to be worrying slightly about Mark that has appeared

About 15 years ago I had some trauma to a finger, all recovered and just s small scar under the fingernail remains. A couple of days ago I noticed a mark has appeared on the nail, similar to a bruise. Can't think why as i didn't bang it against anything and it isn't sore. I would say it's slightly fading but is growing more towards the base of the nail in a kind of vertical pattern. I've attached a picture but made the mistake of googling so am I being unreasonable now thinking the worst Shock...apologies for cheap photo, can't he a phone to focus on the bruise properly.

I know what you're thinking, but chances are it will be fine. I had similar. Make an appointment with the GP to get it checked out. And pay attention to what happens when the nail grows - does the position change? If so it is probably a bit of blood trapped or something. I didn't remember any trauma either when it happened to me. Don't google!

Feelingconfused2020 · 21/07/2020 00:17

I would get it checked because you always should my DD had something similar and it was a bruise which faded. Make an appointment now but try not to worry.

Splinter hematoma. Basically a bruise.

Thanks for comments. I'll keep an eye on it over next week ( keep staring every hour or so looking for any changes)...hate thought of going to doctor with something if it's so minor, hopefully it will show signs of healing.

No such thing as a splinter haematoma. You may be thinking of splinter haemorrhage, which can be due to injury but also can be be a sign of several different diseases. Splinter haemorrhages are much smaller than OP's pic. She needs to see her GP

Thanks @13BoreOfWhabylon, I was worried I would be laughed at for going in with a daft mark on my finger

I would get it checked out and definitely don't take the word of a nail technician over a medic!

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/07/2020 11:38

Well, to be fair, I could be anybody.

But in general, you can spot health professionals on this sort of thread because they will never offer a diagnosis or dismiss symptoms outright.

I did mean real life medic. I was just tickled that a nail technician thought they were qualified to diagnose!

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/07/2020 12:07

Yes, I realised what you meant Smile

Anyone else think ‘Andddd mic drop’ after that? Grin

Thelnebriati · 21/07/2020 12:19

I had one last year that I got checked out after a similar thread to this, mine turned out to be benign, but they still removed it.
Please see your GP asap!

aawcmon · 21/07/2020 13:30

i'm wondering if i should wait a few weeks to see if it moves, etc...my doctors surgery aren't doing appointments right now (in Scotland), i would need to phone receptionist and presumably tell her and see if she'll pass it on...i hate the thought of them thinking i'm a time waster....
"in current environment, you're phoning for a mark on your finger, really!"...daft i know.

Get it seen and don’t mess around. Perhaps your local walk in will be operating a virtual consultation as ours is. Could be nothing, and also , could be serious .

Wolfiefan · 21/07/2020 13:34

Worth calling. They may allow you to email in a picture?

Thelnebriati · 21/07/2020 22:04

No, don't wait a few weeks, get it seen asap. They had me treated and discharged within weeks of being seen by my GP.

PurpleFlower1983 · 21/07/2020 22:08

See your GP, they are encouraging people to come forward with any potentially worrying symptoms. I’m not saying it’s bad but best to check.

aawcmon · 21/07/2020 22:14

@Thelnebriati can I ask if yours was similar to picture, all the images online I see seem to be 1 continuous black line?

Let your GP decide if its serious, call ASAP tomorrow morning and request an urgent appointment, same day.
If its phone call that's fine, you can describe it. I think you will be referred under the 2 week wait as it is possibly serious, but let the experts decide.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 21/07/2020 22:23

Op call them! I had to because my wrist hurt, thought they would think I was wasting time so left it ages and now I am in so much pain I can barely lift my son. I have now been referred to physio but should have called much sooner!

Thelnebriati · 21/07/2020 22:40

@aawcmon Mine was very similar to yours but slightly more yellow. I was seen by the dermatologist within 2 weeks. They couldn't tell by looking at it whether it was fungus, a bruise, damage or a melanoma; so they just whipped it off and tested it.

aawcmon · 22/07/2020 00:19

Thanks everyone, I will call doc's tomorrow morning first thing, better to he embarrassed but safe!

OP posts:
WombOfOnesOwn · 22/07/2020 00:33

What's the "very serious" thing this could be? I've had this sort of thing happen before and so has my DH, and we've never even considered being seen for it! Now I'm wondering if we took our lives into our hands?
