About 15 years ago I had some trauma to a finger, all recovered and just s small scar under the fingernail remains. A couple of days ago I noticed a mark has appeared on the nail, similar to a bruise. Can't think why as i didn't bang it against anything and it isn't sore. I would say it's slightly fading but is growing more towards the base of the nail in a kind of vertical pattern. I've attached a picture but made the mistake of googling so am I being unreasonable now thinking the worst Shock...apologies for cheap photo, can't he a phone to focus on the bruise properly.

What's the "very serious" thing this could be?

Subungual melanoma. Best to get it checked asap, if only for peace of mind.

Phoned docs, not classed as an emergency so i've to phone back tomorrow morning to see if they have any available appts. I had worked myself up to making phonecall but totally appreciate they must be snowed under right now.

@BoreOfWhabylon

The nail technician clearly meant subungual hematoma, which is the medical term for bleeding and bruising under the nail.

When giving medical advice, it is important to be accurate. Also, OP's picture and history is not that of a typical subungual haematoma.
