...to love that I can watch the fabulous Hamilton for under a tenner

I signed up to Disney Plus for a month just to watch this, I really enjoyed it. I have watched it both with and without subtitles to make sure I got every word Grin

There are so many I'd love to see but when we took the kids to see Matilda and Oliver years ago it cost an absolute fortune.

Wish all shows were online (not necessarily D+), I've seen some on NT live and ALW's musicals during lockdown but there must be loads more!

Well I think it's environmentally wasteful. Same with bands touring, which also uses loads of resources and people. Unless it can be sustainably done, it shouldn't be done at all, same as any activity.

Not everyone is such a theatre connoisseur they care about performances being developed (though you'd think most of that would happen during rehearsals anyway, which could have limited online audiences providing feedback too). There will still be plenty of people willing to watch a one-off recorded live performance, even if you aren't one of them.

CoRhona · 21/07/2020 20:14

I'm paying for a month at the moment, I've seen it twice so far and DD has also watched it, so great vfm. DCs and DH want to watch The Mandalorian and the Star Wars stuff but as youngest is 12, I don't think we'd get that much more out of D+, we wouldn't watch hours of wildlife TV.

@Sparklesocks definitely yes to watching Amadeus. Cried pretty much all the way through the film so might have to blame a particularly bad bout of hayfever Grin

Thank goodness most people are more educated than @rosiejaune and realise that that is NOT how the arts work. Once again - how are those in the arts supposed to earn a living if not by working every day?

Nobody will be earning a living if we trash the planet.

You can still do live shows locally. And those recording shows can still work every day by doing more of them (i.e. different ones), reaching a wider audience.

Apparently being educated means you are narrow minded about how things have to go on being done like they always have been (though "always" is actually relatively recent, at least on that scale).

Still1nLove · 21/07/2020 20:44

I think regular online viewings of showswould be great. Not everyone likes ,or can afford, to go to the theatre. But I would certainly be happy to pay, say £10, to see some shows online. I watched One Man, Two Govnors, when the national Theatre showed it at the beginning of lockdown. There were over 100,000 people watching it too (according to the you tube viewer counter, thingy). What a great income stream if they were all paying £10!

Menomosso · 21/07/2020 22:59

@rosiejaune it’s nothing to do with ‘wanting things to be done the way they always have been’ and everything to do with supporting the arts in this country. The arts bring in millions of pounds to the economy - in the west end the theatre industry brings in business not just to the theatres but to the restaurants, shops and hotels. Chucking a tenner towards an online show will not do that.

And I hardly think the environmental impact of theatre shows touring the country (and actors mostly travel on trains, the set and equipment on a single truck) is responsible for the demise of the planet.

CoRhona · 21/07/2020 23:57

I saw One Man Two Guvnors live years ago with JC and it was lovely to see it again during lockdown! Agree, I would be happy to pay too.

Before D+ / NT live et al our local arts centre and/or cinema would show the odd show but not regularly, so if this was the alternative that would be great. It was around £15 a ticket then which I thought was great value.

I love Hamilton! The more I watch it the better it gets!

positivepixie · 22/07/2020 05:25

Loved it live and loving the opportunity to watch it multiple times with LMM in the title role (the London King was definitely better though!).

@SilverOnToast the creation of independent America ‘dull topic’....er ok...

SilverOnToast · 22/07/2020 07:42

Yes, perhaps 'dull topic' is a bit unfair, @positivepixie - i guess I mean that traditionally the dominant narrative could be quite one-sided, especially if you happen to not be white. This is why LMMs mode works so well.

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 22/07/2020 07:45

Me and DD have watched it five times and listened to the soundtrack about 500 times since the Jul 3 release date. We have a GREAT little duet going on for The Schuyler Sisters that involves DH chiming in with “... And Peggy!” Where appropriate.

We will definitely go and see it in London once it’s back on.

Boulshired · 22/07/2020 07:47

The songs just don’t leave your head, DS1 singing Washington by your side, DD singing take my shot and me singing dear Theodosia all simultaneously. Being there live really showcases all the performers, watching through a lens does remove some of the all round intensity.

Murinae · 22/07/2020 07:51

We got Disney + to see Hamilton (which is already seen in the theatre) and have now watched lots of the Marvel films and both Agent Carter series. Not sure we will keep it when the month is up but this first month has definitely been worth it.

positivepixie · 22/07/2020 07:51

@SilverOnToast yes - absolutely love the diversity, he’s changed the Broadway rules about actors looking like their characters in such an effective way.

cuntryclub · 22/07/2020 08:06

I got Disney + right at the start when it released and my youngest DD watches things in it all the time. I'm a huge HAMILTON fan so we got up early and watched it at 8am in release day. I then watched it again straight after!! It's fabulous to see the OBC and the filming angles add something that the theatre can't, but this filmed version is no replacement for seeing it live. I have seen it several times in London and it is worth every penny. Go see it when you all can Grin

theendoftheworldasweknowit · 22/07/2020 08:40

I don't mind watching movies at home, rather than at the cinema. But I can't get into watching theatre at home. To me, it just feels like the magic has been sucked out of the performance...

BalanceGreen · 22/07/2020 08:58

Will be watching Hamilton on D+ and also think the NT Live/encore screenings have been great in our local cinema. Even if we could afford to regularly see stage plays and musicals, the logistics of getting to (normally) London make it very difficult.

BalanceGreen · 22/07/2020 09:01

I'm almost the reverse... I like the cinema experience for films and have found that screenings for theatre have meant I get good angles - the last play I watched live I had a very uncomfortable seat and could barely see the stage.

thegreenlight · 22/07/2020 09:05

Hamilton is on Disney plus because Lin-Manuel Miranda who wrote and starred in Hamilton is very involved in Disney, as well as writing the soundtrack for Moana and Mary Poppins Returns (and being in it) he is currently scoring some patriotic rides for Disney Parks and there is a rumour that Hamilton will be part of Liberty Square in Disney World too. This has been in the offing a long time as when I was at Disney Springs last year the local Disney drama programme was exclusively performing the songs from Hamilton.

thegreenlight · 22/07/2020 09:07

I meant to say that this isn’t about filming broadway shows during the pandemic, it’s about Hamilton now being part of the Disney franchise. Don’t expect any others.

cuntryclub · 22/07/2020 09:14

No. Hamilton is on Disney plus because they paid a shit load of money for it. Nothing more.

thegreenlight · 22/07/2020 09:25

cuntryclub they paid a shit load of money for it because they want to incorporate Hamilton into the parks. Why else would they choose to buy Hamilton in particular? It has already been confirmed that Miranda is scoring other Disney rides. It fits well with Disney World’s patriotic theming in both the Magic Kingdom and EPCOT.

cuntryclub · 22/07/2020 09:32

Yes, they bought it because they wanted it. Not because LMM is 'very involved with Disney'.

thegreenlight · 22/07/2020 09:39

🙄 semantics - the outcome is the same. They wanted to use it for their parks (which make up 1/3 of their business) so they bought it. They can then can use it in the parks and it has some parity with work Miranda is commissioned to do for other rides. I just wanted to get across that it wasn’t a case of Disney just filming a random musical. I doubt there will be any others.

thegreenlight · 22/07/2020 09:47

And ...
‘As a collaborator of The Walt Disney Company, Miranda contributed music for a scene in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019), wrote music and songs in the animated musical Moana (2016), which gained him nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and the Academy Award for Best Original Song, for the song "How Far I'll Go", and starred as Jack in the musical fantasy Mary Poppins Returns (2018), for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.’ Pretty sure he’s very involved with the Disney Company. 🙄
