Lots of house renovation going on at the moment. Our plumber has told us that the house builder (new build) has used the wrong seat for our toilet. WIBU to get a wooden one or are they really naff?

I like them.

Lockheart · 18/07/2020 17:04

It's your toilet, buy what you like. Why do you think that would be unreasonable?

Langsdestiny · 18/07/2020 17:06

I had one, I wouldn't have one again

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 18/07/2020 17:08

Have whatever toilet seat you want. As long as it can be cleaned and you like the look of it then it is fine. Others must like them because retailers sell them.

Delbelleber · 18/07/2020 17:08

@Langsdestiny why not?

I hate my current toilet seat. It's a lovely aquarium theme from b and q but the stupid thing has just been falling apart since I got it. Really bad quality for something that looks so nice and quite expensive!

nitgel · 18/07/2020 17:11

I have got through tons of toilet seats. The break all the time. I now have a cheap plastic one from bemis. Toilet seats are so badly designed imo.

NameChange84 · 18/07/2020 17:12

I wouldn’t if guests are going to use it. They always feel a bit grubby/manky to me as plastic or porcelain/ceramic are easier to clean.

PleasantVille · 18/07/2020 17:14

There's a noticablee trend recently of threads like this, I can't for the life of me work out why anyone is unreasonable to buy what they want/go where the want/do what they want in totally mundane situations without having to consult the internet.
Undercovermuvver · 18/07/2020 17:15

If you do, get a waverly

SilenceOfThePrams · 18/07/2020 17:26

I had one. Fine. Until you have a small boy. That thing hurts when the lid snaps closed mid wee.

weebarra · 18/07/2020 17:27

Oh, I will absolutely make my own mind up. I don't tend to consult MN for decisions, but we've had so much work entailing decision making that I can't be arsed and just wanted opinions.
I think my DM always looked down on them a bit! I was chatting about it with DS2 who said it would be fine as long as I made sure I got a polished one to avoid splinters.

On the plus side, they’re warmer to sit on when it’s a cold winter night and you nip to the loo after the heating has gone off, but against that, they’re harder to keep clean without damaging the surface. Scouring wood repeatedly with disinfectant bathroom cleaner tends to wreck it eventually, so you’re limited to just gently wiping it with water and detergent. In these days of Covid, I think you might prefer a ceramic seat that can be properly sterilised.

I usually get wooden seats, cos I have a STUPID toilet that won't take normal width fitting ( the holes are 225 mm apart ) so I have to undo the hinges and refit them 3 miles further out

Anyway, we just replaced it about a month ago and the actual hinge broke on the new one...ffs

After perusing amazon/ebay for hours I found one in the whole of christendom that fits without need to alter and it's white plastic so that's what I have now

I may have to buy a plush toilet seat cosy for the winter

Eeek!!

I used to be a cleaner in many houses. Trust me. U don’t want one. If it was just me on my own it would be okay. But with boys or a man or near the sink. Just no as they just fall apart.

Elieza · 18/07/2020 17:59

I had one. With inlaid marquetry on the lid. A thing of beauty. Loved it.

However when dampness (pee?!) gets under the varnished top coat it will make the wood swell underneath, the varnish crack, the wood discolour and this will lead to it looking dirty or stained.

I’d suggest a soft close plastic one. Practical and easier to keep clean.

weebarra · 18/07/2020 18:01

Yes, three males in the house. I think hygiene is an issue!

Potayto · 18/07/2020 18:02

They feel so unclean. Don’t do it

There was another thread like it yesterday - "would I be unreasonable to go to a shop without a mask when it's not the law yet" Well 5 seconds thinking would tell you the last part of your sentence makes it fine.

But I have a wooden loo seat in one of my loos. Wood is a natural anti-bacterial anyway.

SerenDippitty · 18/07/2020 18:06

That plush toilet seat cover also looks like it would leave a very pretty pattern on your bum if you sat too long.

TimeWastingButFun · 18/07/2020 18:12

Most of ours are white hard plastic coated ones (I think they are wood inside, not sure). But one is wood, and we didn't like the hygiene aspect of it so I gave it 3 coats of yacht varnish before we fitted it. It might as well be plastic now 😄

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 18/07/2020 18:21

oh lol,@SerenDippitty it would! Be a change from the cellulite and pinchy knicker elastic :o

I feel I should categorically state I most certainly will not be buying one, just in case anyone thinks I was being serious.

maxdash · 18/07/2020 18:25

Bleurgh. Nope. They absorb wee. Not an issue in an adult household where people properly clean up after themselves, but kids, teenage boys, a DH that doesn't put the seat up. Lots of guests. Definitely not!

bilbodog · 18/07/2020 18:42

Modern wooden toilet seats are not unhygienic, they do not Absorb wee! They are well varnished and fine to use!

Langsdestiny · 18/07/2020 19:48

It was hard to clean well, and there are 3 boys in this house, it got warped and horrible really quickly.
